Patent number: 4693246Abstract: Suture tying forceps of improved construction are disclosed which materially reduce a suture being flexed therein from breaking. The suture typing forceps include a pair of members mounted in the free ends of a pair of gripping arms integrally joined at one end. The members terminate in a pair of suture tying tips, respectively featuring a pair of complementary mating surfaces serving as suture clamping surfaces. For the most part, the suture clamping surfaces are designed to clamp a suture segment which is about ten times the thickness of the suture. The suture clamping surfaces further are designed to define a flexing angle transversely thereof which is less than a right angle.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 1985Date of Patent: September 15, 1987Assignee: Mentor D & O, Inc.Inventor: Harry G. Patent number: 4669341Abstract: A workpiece to which traction to be applied is firmly held by a gripping device to which is anchored one end of an impacting hammer having a rectilinear guide with a free end directed away from the workpiece. An impact member of high inertia is slidably disposed on the guide for rapid movement toward an impacting engagement with an abutment carried by the guide adjacent its free end, whereby the resulting tensional forces in the form of a sudden impulse are transmitted through the gripping device to the workpiece for use, for example, in withdrawing the workpiece from a member in which it is firmly anchored or embedded. The gripping arrangement of at least one jaw of the gripping device utilizes a single tooth which is harder than the workpiece to be extracted so that such tooth effectively bites into such workpiece to provide a firmer grip. In another embodiment, each jaw may include a tooth each biting into the workpiece in alignment with each other or in staggered alignment.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1985Date of Patent: June 2, 1987Inventor: Thomas J. Patent number: 4602536Abstract: A split ring opening hand tool is shown in the form of a modified pair of long nosed pliers. One jaw carries a support for a split ring while the other jaws carries a probe that passes between the convolutions of the split ring as the jaws are moved to their closed positions. The probe has a laterally facing inclined surface that converges on the tip end of the probe and the support has a groove which provides a laterally facing inclined surface that is encountered by the probe tip end after it passes through the convolutions. This causes relative lateral movement of the jaws as the convolutions are being spread apart by the relative movement of the probe support.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1980Date of Patent: July 29, 1986Inventor: Gerald N.
