Abstract: Some embodiments pertain to a tool that includes a first arm and a second arm that is rotatably connected to the first arm. The first arm includes an opening and the second arm includes a projection that engages threads on a fastener which is installed within the opening in the first arm. During operation of the tool, a fastener is inserted into the opening in the first arm. Pressure is applied to bring the first and second arms together such that the projection engages the threads of the fastener and then deforms the threads. The first arm may include a plurality of threaded openings such that each opening is adapted to receive a different diameter fastener. In addition, the second arm may include a plurality of projections such that each projection is a different size and is aligned relative to one of the openings in the first arm.

Abstract: A wire pulling assist device has a tong shaped member having two arms biasedly connected at one of the two ends of each arm. A leaf spring at the connected ends of the arms maintains the device in a biasedly open position when the tool is not being used. Wire supports, consisting of curved elements, extend from near the second end of the arms. Applying a squeezing pressure on the arm members compels them and the wire supports towards each other, permitting the wire supports to be inserted into a hole in a metal stud. Metal clad wire can then be threaded through the wire supports and run smoothly and efficiently through the metal stud without impediment.

An epicyclic gear train is set to sequentially provide a grip on a jar, and on a lid, followed by development of torque needed to move the lid in a counterclockwise direction with respect to the jar. The principles embodied in the opener shown can be realized in an opener which can be manually powered, or preferably motorized and possibly highly automated. A differential geartrain provides reduction of speed and increase in torque and then provides two balanced and opposing forces through the epicyclic gear assembly having sun and planet gears. Abstract: A support surface (3) is bordered on at least two sides by fins while mounted at an opposite corner is a clamping device comprising a slide (6) which can be drawn back from a starting position against the force of a coil spring (9) and which has a clamping plate (10) which has a clamping surface facing the diagonally opposite corner. When a microtiter plate is set down on the support surface (3) by means of a gripper, a lever (12) of the clamping device (5) is pressed down by a gripper arm and the clamping plate (10) is drawn back from a starting position by the action of a thrust surface (15) on the underside of the lever (12) on a sliding projection (11) of the slide (6) and said clamping plate is then moved forwards again to said starting position when the gripper is raised, so that it clamps the microtiter plate against the fins and holds it in a defined position.

  • Patent number: 6067700
Abstract: An elastomeric compressor mount has a hollow convex cylindrical head portion which must be passed upwardly through a substantially smaller diameter circular opening in a support foot portion of the compressor. To facilitate the passage of the mount head portion through the support foot opening a specially designed clamping tool is provided which has an arcuate support portion and a clamping portion that may be pivoted toward and away from a concave side surface of the support portion. With these two tool portions pivoted toward each other they are inserted downwardly through the compressor foot opening, opened, and then clamped exteriorly onto the mount head portion in a manner deforming it to a generally U-shaped configuration as viewed along the axis of the mount.

  • Patent number: 5833697
Abstract: A surgical instrument for holding a suture needle is provided. The instrument is of a scissors configuration with elongated arms having finger loops at one end and jaws at the other end to grasp a suture needle. This improved instrument has specialized jaws containing a transverse channel that securely holds a suture needle at a right angle to the axis of the needle holder jaws. The width of the transverse channel adjusts to the size of the suture needle by means of a cam and spring loaded camming surface which move a sliding member against the side of a suture needle as the jaws of the needle holder are closed. This improved configuration significantly reduces the long standing problem of suture needle twisting or rotation in the needle holder jaws as the surgeon passes the needle through tissue.

  • Patent number: 5697114
Abstract: A folding multi-tool comprising first and second generally channel-shaped handles each having first and second ends, each generally channel-shaped handle having an open side and an at least partly closed side opposite the open side, the at least partly closed sides comprising plier-receiving openings. The folding multi-tool also includes pliers including first and second plier halves pivotally mounted to each other, with the plier halves being pivotally mounted between flanges at the first ends of the handles. Control straps extend between the flanges for limiting the maximum pivotal movement of the plier halves and for frictionally resisting pivotal movement of the plier halves. The folding multi-tool is foldable between a closed, compact configuration and an opened, extended configuration for operating the pliers and in the opened, extended configuration the open sides of the handles face each other.

  • Patent number: 5554161
Abstract: A tool for removing ticks and similar parasites. A spoon-shaped tool, the spoon of which is split lengthwise and hinged to rotate the split spoon sections normally open far enough to fit over a tick's body, then rotated closed into an overlapping relationship by thumb and forefinger closing pressure to trap the tick about the neck in a v-shaped slit in one side of the opening in the spoon. A mechanical stop prevents the slit from closing completely to sever the tick from it's head. The handle may have a centerline hinge, integral spring, and thumb and finger locators to facilitate use of the tool in a palm-down fashion by either hand. The spoon sections may have opposing slits that close upon each other to likewise trap the tick. The tick is at all times visible in the open bowl of the tool. The tool may be molded in one piece, with a "living hinge" and spring incorporated into it's design.

Abstract: An instrument and method for locating and attaching a spinal coupler to an implanted spinal rod including body and lever handles that attach about the spinal rod. A cam handle is connected to the body handle to actuate a plunger that applies a compression force to the spinal coupler to attach it to the spinal rod by an interference fit. The body and lever handles each include a forked jaw having legs that attach to the spinal rod on each side of the spinal coupler. In one embodiment, the plunger includes a control knob to vary the instrument actuating force and prevent over extension of the plunger.

  • Patent number: 5121662
Abstract: A system of pliers or the like, and "second bite" elements is disclosed. The pliers or the like are typically formed by at least two basic elements which are pivotally interconnected and which each have handle and jaw regions. Causing the handles of the pliers or the like to move toward one another also causes the jaws thereof to similarly move closer to one another by way of pliers action, or if an object is present between the jaws, more firmly grip the object. The second bite elements are pivotally attached to the end of one of the handles of the pliers or the like and interact with the other handle thereof to allow a user to more easily grip an object in the jaws of the pliers or the like by way of a force applied to the pliers or the like and the second bite elements.
