  • Patent number: 5746298
Abstract: A miniature, adjustable torque limiting screwdriver includes an elongated hollow handle internally threaded at one end. A torque-limiting mechanism is disposed within the handle and includes a rigid shaft having a hex inner end and a plurality of flexible resilient fingers engageable with the hex. An adjusting collar encircles and engages the fingers and is threadedly engaged with the handle for axial movement to adjust the force with which the fingers grip the hex end of the shaft. The outer end of the shaft sockets a driver shank. When the handle is rotated it rotates the shank up to a predetermined torque, at which point the flexible and resilient torque members slip with respect to the drive surface portions of the shaft to prevent further torque application.

  • Patent number: 5647254
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for a torque driver including an axially displaceable gear with a biasing assembly to bias the displaceable gear into an engagement position. A rotatable cap is provided with a micrometer dial to select a desired output torque. An intermediate bevel gear assembly is disposed between an input gear and an output gear. A gear tooth profile provides a separation force that overcomes the bias to limit torque at a desired torque limit. The torque limit is adjustable and may be adjusted manually or automatically depending on the type of biasing assembly provided. A clutch assembly automatically limits axial force applied to a fastener by the operator to avoid alteration of the desired torque limit.

The gear and the intermediate clutch disc are selectively connected and separated by a first clutch, while the intermediate clutch disc and the main spindle are always connected together by a second clutch. • Patent number: 5025903
Abstract: In an electrically powered combination screwdriver/drill opposing halves of a ratchet type torque tranmsitting clutch are normally biased axially apart by a compression spring. The output half of the clutch is fixed on the output spindle of the tool which is free to move axially within limits. For screwdriving operation, operator bias of the tool against the workpiece overcomes the spring, retracting the output spindle and bringing the clutch halves into engagement. An adjustable stop in the nose of the tool limits axially rearward movement of the output spindle and hence depth of engagement of the clutch teeth, thus providing a variable limit on torque transmitted. For the drilling mode, the rearward half of the clutch is cammed forward so that the clutch is firmly engaged for continuous rotation of the output spindle without specific torque limitation. An operator may switch from drilling mode to screwdriving mode and back without disturbing the torque limit adjustment of the screwdriving mode.

  • Patent number: 4991473
Abstract: A driver with automatic speed and torque switching including two different drive trains which operate in parallel and are driven at the same time by a motor. One drive train provides a high-speed output while the other provides a low-speed output. A single drive head for transmitting torque to the nut is normally coupled to the high-speed output, and not to the low-speed output. The machine operates initially at the high speed for the "free rotation" of the nut. When the nut contacts the surface of the structural body, the drive coupling to the high-speed output is disabled, and the low-speed output (which formerly was not coupled to the drive head) is not at the same time coupled to the drive head. The nut is then driven much more slowly but with a higher driving torque. Within the low-speed drive train there is included a friction clutch, and adjustement means for adjusting the level of torque at which it will slip.

  • Patent number: 4964319
Abstract: A socket wrench device is used to rotate a spark plug. The device includes a socket member with a socket to fit the spark plug. An endless series of ratchet teeth are provided on the socket member so as to engage with another endless series of ratchet teeth which are provided on a driving member. The driving member is retained on the socket member in such a manner that the ratchet teeth of the driving member are engaged removably with those of the socket member. An annular spring element is sleeved on the driving member so as to bias the two series of ratchet teeth to join together. When the device rotates the spark plug to an appropriate position in the cylinder of an internal combustion engine, an external torque which is applied to the device compresses the spring element, so that the ratchet teeth of the driving member are disengaged from those of the driving member, thereby stopping the rotation of the spark plug relative to the cylinder.

Abstract: A power-operated tool is fitted with a drive, whose driving shaft can, by means of a connecting coupling whose actuation depends on the reaction torque, be coupled with a driven shaft. The connecting coupling first interrupts transfer of the torque to the driven shaft, so that, in spite of the running drive, no torque can be transferred to the driving shaft. • Patent number: 4630512
Abstract: In a motor-driven screw driving device, a drive unit and a drive member are located within a housing and are interconnected by a torque-limiting coupling. The coupling is adjustable by changing the force applied to a spring element. The spring element is supported within a stop sleeve located within the housing and the stop sleeve is axially displaceable relative to the housing. A depth stop on the drive spindle is adjustable relative to the stop sleeve. An actuating sleeve accessible on the exterior of the screw driving device affords the adjustment of the stop sleeve and the depth stop.
