  • Patent number: 4664001
Abstract: A torque wrench, basically exemplified by a torque beam having a driver at one end, a grip at its other end and apparatus associated with said driver and beam providing an observable read-out of any torque that may be developed during use of the wrench, particularly distinguished by a system for defining a prescribed torque limit in use thereof having means associated therewith for producing a highly distinctive alarm signal the nature of which is such to produce an instantaneous torque limiting response of the user at precisely that time the level of the torque applied to said beam reaches said prescribed limit. In a preferred embodiment the system for producing said signal is located in connection with a housing which is releasably based on and secured to said beam immediately of its grip, the means through which the signal is triggered is functionally related to a portion of said read-out apparatus and the alarm signal is preferably provided by a source of light and optionally by a source of sound.

  • Patent number: 4403531
Abstract: The invention comprises improvements in manual preset torque wrenches that substantially improve the useful life of the wrench, the repeatable accuracy of the wrench, and substantially decrease the weight and manufacturing cost of the wrench. The improvements include a free floating camming roller that moves from dual pockets with a rolling action substantially out of the pockets at the preset torque. In one embodiment the camming roller is centered within the wrench in the unactuated position between milled slots that comprise the pockets. In an alternate embodiment the pockets and camming roller are offset from the centerline of the wrench permitting a configuration that greatly reduces friction on the inside of the tubular wrench body. The reduction in friction and abrasion in the alternate embodiment permits a lightweight aluminum tube to be substituted for the body of the wrench thus significantly reducing the weight of the wrench.

  • Patent number: 4316397
Abstract: A torque wrench having a main body of fixed overall length and having a torque adjusting mechanism enclosed within the main body. The adjusting mechanism is controlled by a rotatable handle disposed about the main body. The adjusting mechanism includes a first part which is connected with the handle for joint rotation therewith, but which is constrained against axial movement. The adjusting mechanism further includes a second part having a polygonal portion extending into a polygonal recess in the first part to couple the first and second parts for joint rotation while permitting linear movement of the second part. The second part is designed to move linearly in response to joint rotation of the first and second parts in order to effect adjustment of the torque setting of the wrench. The handle contains a locking mechanism to prevent movement of the adjusting mechanism during operation of the torque wrench.

  • Patent number: 4248107
Abstract: An improved adjusting torque wrench includes an adjusting screw that is utilized for the purpose of changing the torque setting of the wrench. The screw has a radial flange thereon having a plurality of circumferentially spaced notches in the outer periphery of the flange. The adjusting screw is fixed to the grip member and rotatable therewith relative to an adjusting nut that is fixed in the lever arm of the wrench. A detent that is movable into and out of the recesses in the adjusting screw is slidably carried by the lever arm so that when engaged in the recesses, the detent prevents relative rotation between the grip member and the lever arm, and thus prevents adjustment of the torque. Also, the detent extends exteriorly of the gripping member so that it can be grasped by the operator of the wrench and moved out of the recesses so that the wrench can be easily adjusted to a new torque setting.
