  • Patent number: 5713250
Abstract: Apparatus for assembling fasteners includes a fastening wrench operated by a first operator and having interchangeable sockets of different sizes for engaging nuts of different sizes. The nuts are required to be tightened to different torque values on their respective bolts. When the first operator removes a socket from a socket tray in preparation for attaching the socket to the fastening wrench, a signal is sent to a controller which determines the torque value associated with that socket size. When the fastening wrench reaches the specified torque value during the tightening operation, the controller automatically shuts the fastening wrench off. The apparatus also includes a second wrench, operated by a second operator, for engaging the heads of the bolts to prevent them from turning during the tightening process. During the tightening process the second operator may not be in communication with the first operator.

  • Patent number: 5692418
Abstract: A nut runner tool is used to engage, turn, capture and lift the RPV head closure nuts from the RPV studs. The tool is also used to capture, lift and transport the nuts from the storage tray to the RPV head closure studs. The nut runner system enables a single operator to remove and install head closure nuts quickly and safely. The nut runner is powered by a remotely operated air driver. The reaction torque is transferred safely through the tool into the top of the closure stud. The air driver unthreads the nut, then a nut holding device is actuated, and the nut and tool are lifted from the top of the stud with a hoist attached to a trolley. The nut and tool are moved radially from the stud location to the storage position in the nut rack. When positioned over the storage location, the lowering of the nut into the rack is performed by the hoist, eliminating the need to manhandle the nuts into and out of the storage rack.

  • Patent number: 5542273
Abstract: A barrel lock includes a cylindrical plug with a locking ball actuated by a positive acting threaded pin that is screwed into the plug. The plug slips into a mating cylindrical retainer and is locked in place by the pin forcing the ball to protrude beyond tile exterior of the cylindrical plug. An anti-rotation coupling that includes a key attaches to the plug which makes the barrel lock especially easy to install and operate. A threaded puller assures separation of the plug and retainer even when the barrel lock may be jammed due to earlier tampering. The simplicity of the invention provides for a rugged construction with positive sealing surfaces that protect against contaminants and corrosion.

  • Patent number: 4762030
Abstract: A tool for removal of round internally threaded collars from high efficiency aerospace fasteners. The tool includes a central cylindrical pin having a head at one end held against rotation, a non-round extension at the second end and a transverse bore intermediate the ends, containing a ball which is spring biased to project slightly beyond the pin wall. A mandrel assembly surrounds the pin and is rotatable relative thereto. A gripping collet is positioned between the mandrel and pin with collet fingers at one end extending beyond the mandrel and a threaded second end threaded into said mandrel. An axial slot in said collet is adapted to receive said ball when aligned therewith to form a releasable latch mechanism. In operation, the open collet fingers are placed over a threaded collar with said extension in engagement with a corresponding recess in the end of the bolt within the collar. The socket and mandrel are rotated in the collar unthreading direction.

Abstract: The apparatus prevents undesirable rotation of screw bolts or the like provided at their ends with spanner working surfaces, in particular large screw bolts. Adapters are positioned individually on the said ends of the screw bolts and each has opposing surfaces adapted to the spanner working surfaces of a screw bolt. Carriers are pushed onto the adapters and each have internal teeth which can be brought into mesh with external teeth of the adapter. A holder mounts least two carriers with slight angular mobility, at a spacing corresponding to the axial interval between screw bolts.

Abstract: A tactile engaging wrenching tool adapted for use in the installation of blind bolt fasteners. The wrenching tool includes a wrench adaptor for engaging the fastener screw and a nose-piece for holding the fastener head while the screw is turned to set the fastener. A clutch assembly is provided which transmits a light torque load to the wrench adaptor while the nose-piece is engaging the nut head. The clutch assembly is designed to provide a high torque load to the wrench adaptor to turn the screw and seat the fastener only after the nose-piece has been biased into a secure engagement with the fastener. The wrenching tool mechanism is especially well-suited for use in systems for automatic installation of blind bolt fasteners.
