  • Patent number: 6993848
Abstract: A pipe preparation device is disclosed for chamfering pipe ends and placing witness marks thereon to provide a visible indication that the pipes are properly engaged with a coupling. The device includes a body having co-axially aligned receptacles at opposite ends, the receptacles being sized to receive pipes having different diameters from one another. Cutting blades are mounted on the body and project into each receptacle. The blades have cutting edges that engage the end of a pipe inserted into a receptacle and cut a chamfer when the body is rotated relatively to the pipe. Two scoring tools project into each receptacle. The tools have contact surfaces that engage a pipe inserted into the receptacle. The tools in each receptacle are offset from one another and form two circumferential grooves around the pipe when the body and pipe are rotated relatively to each other. The grooves act as witness marks.

  • Patent number: 6460438
Abstract: A facing tool includes a fixture that securely holds a workpiece, and a fixture retainer that secures the fixture and workpiece against axial and radial movement during a facing operation. In one embodiment, the fixture includes a two piece construction that allows a first piece to be swung away from the second piece to accommodate a variety of sizes of workpieces. Provision is also made for a positive load on the cutting tool to reduce or eliminate tool vibration, as well as a chip shield that deflects debris away from the workpiece. A tool spindle is provided that allows for a plurality of cutting tool positions on the spindle to accommodate different workpiece diameters.

  • Patent number: 6418822
Abstract: A cut-off apparatus for non-circular tubes includes an axially movable carriage supporting one or more cutter assemblies and a drive system for driving the carriage synchronously with an advancing tubes. The advancing tube is received over a cutting mandrel mounted for movement with the carriage. The one or more cutter assemblies are disposed within the mandrel and comprise radially movable knives that are extended outward so as to cut the tube from the inside. The knives are urged radially outwardly by a cam moved by a control rod disposed within the mandrel. A clamp assembly is mounted on the carriage radially outwardly of the tube aligned with a cutter assembly, and includes clamp members that move inwardly to clamp the tube from the outside to restrain the tube against radially outward movement when being cut.

Abstract: A method of manufacturing precision machined thin sleeves, as for engine cylinder liners in which the outside diameter of a thick walled tubular preform is first machined to a finish size, and the preform chucked in an encircling jaw chuck on the preform outside diameter. The inside diameter is machined to a finish size having a desired wall thickness. The encircling surfaces of the chuck jaws creates a slightly undersized circle to clamp the preform to a predetermined degree.

  • Patent number: 6412376
Abstract: A PVC-pipe-end smooth-surfacer has a reamer cylinder (1) sized and shaped to fit slidably on an outside periphery of an external periphery of a PVC pipe (2) proximate a pipe end (12) to be cut with a cutting wheel (5) rotatable in a cylinder-base bearing (3) while a cutter shaft (4) on the cutter wheel is being rotated with a cutting element (15, 16) of the cutting wheel in cutting contact with the pipe end. A shaft keeper (14) on the cutter shaft assures limited travel of the cutter shaft through the cylinder-base bearing. An insertion spring (10) on the cutter shaft positions the cutting wheel in predetermined pressure against the pipe end. A reamer-cylinder base can have chip-removal apertures (13) for discharge of pipe-end cuttings. The reamer cylinder can have one or more internal graspers (23, 24) which can be used to center and to fix the reamer cylinder non-rotationally but removably on the external periphery of the PVC pipe.
