Portable Lathe For Pipe Turning Patents (Class 82/113)
  • Patent number: 4944205
Abstract: The present invention pertains to a cam-actuated ratchet feed drive for a clamshell lathe having a guide block attachable to the rotating ring gear of the clamshell and which slidingly supports a tool holding block in a dove-tail guideway. A threaded lead screw is coupled to the tool holding block and adapted to be driven either clockwise or counterclockwise by a cam-actuated pawl/racket combination. Means are provided for shifting a pair of pawls relative to associated ratchet wheels such that one, the other or neither of the ratchet wheels is driven upon engagement of the cam surface with a stationary cam follower.

  • Patent number: 4939965
Abstract: The invention relates to cutting and the like tools and is particularly concerned with the cutting of an internal weld bead from within plastics pipes. It is well-known to remove an external weld bead from the junction between two plastics pipes, not only to provide a smooth external profile but also to allow the weld between the pipes to be inspected. The costs and difficulties in removing the internal beads at the welded junction has frequently resulted in the internal bead being left, and when the internal weld cannot be inspected, and turbulence created in gas or fluid being driven through the pipeline results in a higher power requirement.

  • Patent number: 4854200
Abstract: A portable machine for field facing and threading of pipe including a body in which is carried a shaft for rotation about a central axis. Attachment apparatus attaches the body to the end of a pipe so that the central axis of the machine and pipe are substantially coaxial. Attached to the shaft is a cutting tool assembly which rotates with the shaft to cut the end of the pipe. Linear and radial feed components provide, respectively, generally longitudinal and transverse motion to the cutting tool assembly relative to the central axis of the machine. The relative taper and thread pitch producible on a given pipe section may be modified by interchangeable gear assemblies.

  • Patent number: 4852435
Abstract: A portable flange facer may be used to machine flange faces without removing the pipe from its installation thereby avoiding extensive disassembly and downtime. A stationary spindle, mounted centrally within the pipe bore, provides a structure about which a main body rotates. A motor, mounted upon the main body, and a gear means, coupling the motor to the stationary spindle, are used to rotate the main body about the spindle. A cutting element, mounted upon a turning bar slidable within the main body, may be moved radially inwardly and outwardly by manual or automatic means. The flange facer may be used to resurface a flange face or to form circular grooves therein.

  • Patent number: 4840096
Abstract: The chamfering device comprises a frame to be centered and fixed coaxially within the pipe. A tool and its support are mounted concentrically around the frame and are movable along and about the axis in both translation and rotation by drive motors, and its position is detected and fixed before chamfering. The entire operation proceeds automatically without visual control or manual action, so that it can be performed in a radioactive environment.

  • Patent number: 4829860
Abstract: A portable lathe tool includes fixed and rotating split rings, the fixed ring arranged to be secured to a pipe workpiece, the rotating ring being relatively rotatable with respect thereto for carrying a tool capable of performing a machining operation on the workpiece as it is driven around the circumference of the latter. A bearing arrangement for supporting the relatively rotating ring on the fixed ring is disclosed as having a plurality of discreet, circumferentially spaced bearing segments, each having converging radial and thrust bearing surfaces for engaging the rear end area of the rotating ring for axially, radially and rotationally locating and guiding the rotating ring relative to the fixed ring. An adjustment system is provided for accurately locating and adjusting the position of each of the bearing segments ring relative to the fixed ring to permit compensation for wear and dimensional variations.

  • Patent number: 4824301
Abstract: The adjustment device comprises three rings (15, 16, 17), whose inside diameter is greater than the outside diameter of the part of the hollow workpiece (5) on which the chamfer (10) is to be machined. The support ring (15) is fastened in a substantially centered position on the workpiece (5), and carries support assemblies (20) for the orientation ring (16). • Patent number: 4819525
Abstract: A rotary cutting tool useful for remotely machining tube ends, and method for using the tool to remotely machine a tube end portion such as for weld preparation. The cutting tool comprises an elongated main body having a reduced diameter front end portion and provided with three equally-spaced longitudinal grooves, each groove containing a spring-actuated cutting blade pivotally attached to the tool body. The cutting blades are adjustable radially relative to the tool body by spring and axially movable collar means, which collar is connected to and operated by an actuating piston means located at the opposite end of the tool. In use, the tool forward end with cutting blades retracted is first remotely inserted through an opening, after which the tool forward end with blades extended is inserted into a tube. The cutting tool is then rotated for trimming the end of the tube to a desired angle, and cleaning the tube end outer surface such as in preparation for welding a new mating replacement tube in place.
