    Abstract: The machining unit is composed mainly of three essential elements which are the rotor, the phase displacement device and the tool drive mechanism. The rotor (100) includes a rotating shaft (1) and is equipped, for example, with four bores, extending parallel to the axis of rotation, into which the cutter carrier axles (9a, 9b, 9c and 9d) are supported. A plunge of the cutters into the material to be machined is controlled by the movement of a command sleeve (19) supporting, at its end, two surfaces (20a and 20b) of ellipsoidal form located to move, in conjunction with the inclined surfaces (14a, 14b, 14c and 14d), the command levers of the tool carrier. The command sleeve can occupy two extreme positions and one intermediary position. A phase displacement device includes a pulley (22) and a reverse pulley (25) mounted rotatably on a shaft (31) to allow angular phase change of the command sleeve (19) with respect to the spindle.

    Abstract: A sealing ring is disclosed which is formed of an elastomeric material wherein the cross section thereof has a plurality of substantially flat surfaces, and wherein the inner and outer diameter surfaces, which are the sealing surfaces thereof, are molded surfaces. The remaining surfaces are machined or cut surfaces. The preferred number of surfaces or faces in cross section is 8, and this has been found to give the best results, although other numbers of surfaces may also be used. Since the ring itself is not a molded ring, but has only the inner and outer surfaces thereof which are molded, there is also disclosed a novel method of making such a ring, as well as a novel apparatus for use in a carrying out the method of making the ring, wherein a molded elastomeric sleeve is provided and wherein inclined surfaces are cut therein in such a way that when the ring is severed from the sleeve it will have the desired number of flat surfaces.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a machine and method for slitting elongated rolls of web material rolled upon a tubular core utilizing a circular double edged knife blade in combination with a circular saw blade. Both blades are rotatably mounted within a rigid common carriage. The carriage is mounted for movement parallel to the axis of the elongated roll to a plurality of cutting locations along the length of the roll and for movement in a cutting stroke perpendicular to the axis of the elongated roll. The machine and method of the present invention may also utilize a separate knife blade to cut the core of the roll.

    Abstract: A rotary cutting mechanism for transversely slicing an elongated rotatably driven roll of material such as plastic film into a number of narrower rolls includes a pair of spaced-apart knife cutting blades mounted for free rotation about an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the roll. A rotary saw blade is mounted intermediate and in axial alignment with the cutting blades, and is independently driven to remove material between the cutting blade edges as the blades are moved together to slice the roll. The finished narrower cut rolls therefore exhibit smoothly finished side edges and are readily separable from each other, there being no frictional heat developed by the cutting blade edges which are free to turn with the material on the roll as they slice through it.

    Abstract: An apparatus for cutting a plurality of selected lengths from a rod-like workpiece. A plurality of annular saws or mills have cutting teeth formed on the inner annuli which have diameters greater than the diameter of the workpiece. The workpiece is passed through the annuli such that the distance between one saw and the end of the workpiece defines one selected length while the distances between each pair of adjacent saws define the other selected lengths. The saws and the workpiece are relatively rotated in opposite directions, while concurrently the saws are moved transversely to bring the teeth of the saws into cutting engagement with the workpiece. If the apparatus comprises two annular saws, the annular saws are moved in opposite transverse directions so that the saws are concurrently engaging opposite sides of the workpiece. The transverse movements of the saws are controlled such that the saw nearest the end of the workpiece completes its cut first.

The apparatus trims both ends of a roll comprising a sheet-like material wound up on a core, particularly, stretchable one such as plastics film, by cutting off the irregularity of both the ends, finishing them into flat faces. It comprises a conveying means for carrying rolls horizontally to a given location, a supporting means of a pair of chucks for supporting the roll at both the ends, while providing it with a rotation in the winding direction of the roll, and a cutting means provided close to the pair of chucks, including a pair of disk cutters arranged co-axially and having respectively separate shafts parallel with the shafts of the chucks, the disk cutters being capable of moving toward and away from each other and of reciprocating in the direction at right angle to said toward-and-away motion.

Another feature is the use of a hydraulic bearing for reducing friction between the object rotating chuck stands and the track on which the stands are moved by simultaneously flushing the abrasive particles from the track. In one embodiment, the flushing material is recycled to replenish the coolant reservoir fluid loss through evaporation.
