A holder/crank having a rotational rim is attached to the spool of the oil filter and locked in place. The holder/crank and spool are then installed in the spindle assembly so that the spindle engages the hole in the spool and rim engages the plurality of bearings. The holder/crank is then rotated as the cutter is brought to bear against the filter medium so that a circumferential cut is made through the filter medium.

Abstract: A method for making a cutting insert for use in an ID rotary cutter includes obtaining the profile of a convex surface portion of a finished part to be milled with the cutter, translating the profile a minimum distance away from a reference axis for the convex surface portion, and generating a reference contour by rotating the translated profile about the reference axis. A reference profile for a cutting edge of the cutting insert is obtained as the intersection of the reference contour with a reference plane that is disposed at a predetermined helix angle relative to the reference axis.

  • Patent number: 6502486
Abstract: A method for producing steel rolling bearing rings, starting from a hot-rolled tube, the structure of which is similar to a spheroidized structure and from which rings of the same continuous length are hot-cut while supplying a lubricant and, after cooling, are further processed. The hot-cutting takes place at a temperature below the transformation temperature of the rolling bearing steel used but above 720° C., with subsequent cooling in static air. From the blank ring a green or soft ring of a rolling bearing ring is produced with narrow tolerances of its shaped elements by an optimally timed multistage machining type of cold further processing operation, the main element of the cold further processing being a turning operation.

Abstract: A cut-off apparatus for non-circular tubes includes an axially movable carriage supporting one or more cutter assemblies and a drive system for driving the carriage synchronously with an advancing tubes. The advancing tube is received over a cutting mandrel mounted for movement with the carriage. The one or more cutter assemblies are disposed within the mandrel and comprise radially movable knives that are extended outward so as to cut the tube from the inside. The knives are urged radially outwardly by a cam moved by a control rod disposed within the mandrel. A clamp assembly is mounted on the carriage radially outwardly of the tube aligned with a cutter assembly, and includes clamp members that move inwardly to clamp the tube from the outside to restrain the tube against radially outward movement when being cut.

Abstract: An apparatus and design method for an insert and cutting tool body together, permitting re-profiling and reusing profile insert blades on a rotating cutting tool without losing the radial, the axial or the profile dimensions. The cutting tool body has one or more insert pockets for receiving profiled inserts. Each profiled insert has a top edge, a cutting profile, a reference edge, a ramp edge, and two parallel faces, and is held in place by a clamping mechanism. The back edge of the profiled insert is aligned against a ramp edge of the cutting tool body, and the bottom edge is aligned with a bottom face of the cutting tool body. As the profiled insert becomes dull, the blade is reprofiled along the profile cutting edge, and a proportional amount of material is removed from the bottom edge of the insert blade to establish a new profile workpiece and a new reference edge.

  • Patent number: 6327946
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a mechanical seal used in fluid applications, wherein the mechanical seal is comprised of a sintered (cemented) tungsten carbide ring that is turned on a lathe at a negative top rake angle instead of formed by grinding. The cemented tungsten carbide ring is initially prepared by rounding corners of the top surface to form a radii. The resulting mechanical seal yields significantly less surface damage, can be formed using faster cutting speeds and feeds than when grinding, enables formation of a greater range of complex geometries for the mechanical seals, and requires fewer passes than grinding. The compact is also formed at a significantly reduced cost as compared to grinding.
