Patent number: 4208931Abstract: A method and apparatus for cutting blocks of bulk material such as cheese and the like into slabs and bars wherein an elongate cutter filament is supported by and between supply and take-up spools so as to extend transversely of a slab cutting station adapted to receive a block of bulk material therein. The supply and take-up spools are operable to move the cutter filament through the block to sequentially cut slabs therefrom and to incrementally advance the cutter filament after each cut so as to remove any given segment of the cutter filament from the effective cutting length before it fatigues to possible failure. After cutting slabs from the block, the slabs are passed through a bar cutter die operative to cut the slab into a plurality of bars of substantially uniform size and weight.Type: GrantFiled: September 25, 1978Date of Patent: June 24, 1980Assignee: Kraft, Inc.Inventor: Truman F. Patent number: 4175455Abstract: A continuous material, such as a block of urethane foam, is moved at a constant speed in a longitudinal direction on an infeed conveyor. A stationary cutting platen is situated at the end of the infeed conveyor. A cutting saw is movable in the longitudinal and vertical direction above the platen. A piece of the material, once cut, is carried away by an outfeed conveyor adjacent the platen. The movement of the conveyors and the longitudinal and vertical movements of the cutting saw are coordinated so that the cut of the material is always completed over the cutting platen.Type: GrantFiled: March 22, 1978Date of Patent: November 27, 1979Assignee: McNeil CorporationInventors: James Genis, William T. Patent number: 4163406Abstract: A feed apparatus for conveying articles to a rotary cutter for cutting the articles lengthwise into segments. To obtain nearly equal sized segments while cutting randomly sized articles, the feed apparatus receives the articles one at a time between feed belts spaced radially about the cutter center line. These belts are supported to move radially outward in unison to accommodate each article thereby aligning the articles with the cutter center line prior to cutting.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1977Date of Patent: August 7, 1979Assignees: Genevieve I. Patent number: 4158417Abstract: Apparatus comprising a pair of endless conveyors arranged on an aligned line with a space therebetween, one of which runs intermittently and the other continuously; a lifter arranged between the conveyors to freely move up- and downwards; a gripper arranged above the lifter to freely close and open its claws; and a cutter arranged immediately below the gripper and attached freely swingable and integral to a cutter plate being freely movable in a direction perpendicular to the direction at which a cylindrical package is conveyed; wherein the front end of the package is brought and stopped above the lifter by means of the intermittently running conveyor; the front end of the package is a little lifted and pressed by the lifter against the claws of the gripper; the gripper closes its claws to grip the packaging material of the package at the upper side thereof and then to hang the package when the lifter returns to its original position; the tip of the cutter is horizontally thrust into the packaging material beType: GrantFiled: October 18, 1976Date of Patent: June 19, 1979Assignee: Toyo Seikan Kaisha, Ltd.Inventor: Yoshito Inoue

Patent number: 4064677Abstract: A microfilm inserter having a table for retaining a microfilm jacket in a fixed position is provided with a pair of feed rolls at either end of the table, a detecting means for detecting the trailing end of a microfilm strip to be inserted into said jacket, and a cutter for cutting off the leader of said microfilm strip. A film strip having a leader is fed through the feed rolls at one end and into the insertion slot of the jacket. When the leader exits from the far end of the jacket, it passes between the other pair of rolls and the film strip continues to be transported even after the trailing end thereof has passed through the feed rolls at said one end. When it is detected that the trailing end of the film strip has arrived at a predetermined position, the film strip is stopped and the leader is cut off along the far end of the jacket.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 1977Date of Patent: December 27, 1977Assignee: Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.Inventors: Yutaka Takahashi, Yoshio Hakamata, Masamitu Konno

Patent number: 4014233Abstract: This invention relates to an improvement in an apparatus for cutting a sheet from a web of material, including a magazine roll for the web of material, a cutting station, at least one feeding device for the web upstream of the cutting station and which is stationary during a cutting operation, a feeding device downstream of the cutting station and which is in operation during a cutting operation, movable curved guide means between the cutting station and the downstream feeding device, which guide means provides a shorter path for the web of material between the cutting station and the feeding device downstream thereof during the cutting operation,The improvement comprising separate drive means for the movable curved guide means,Additional feeding means for the web including at least one rotary element means positioned between the cutting station and the movable guide means, said rotary element means being adapted to rest against a web of material with a frictional force lower than that of the other feeding deType: GrantFiled: March 19, 1976Date of Patent: March 29, 1977Assignee: Hoechst AktiengesellschaftInventors: Arthur Wolfinger, Klaus Nicolay

Patent number: 3981212Abstract: A three-knife sheet trimmer is so constructed as to separate the drive for the knives (one front knife and two side knives) from the drive for the clamps which hold the sheets (e.g., the sheets of a book) stationary while being trimmed. The knives at the stations are operated out of phase, and the moving masses are therefore balanced compared to the previous form of these trimmers where all knives move in the same direction at the same time. Separating the drives also enables a book to be sooner advanced from the first knife station to the second knife station. This being so, there is a greater allowance of time in which to make the transfer, and hence there is no need to rush the book.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1973Date of Patent: September 21, 1976Inventors: William B. McCain, James F. Cosgrove, Elmer D. Bewersdorf

Patent number: 3979983Abstract: An ironworker is provided with a powered set of opposed workpiece clamps for accurately locating a workpiece beneath a punch or the like. The preferred form employs a rotary powered, numerically controlled means for moving the clamps.A unique timing-belt drive is provided for moving long workpieces, such as elongated channels or the like, from a rotary powered input.A workpiece clamp is provided with a stationary first workpiece-engaging member and a movable second workpiece-engaging member which is slidable along its longitudinal axis from an extended position where it is closely spaced and aligned above the first workpiece-engaging member to a retracted position where it is moved upwardly away from the first workpiece-engaging member and slid longitudinally rearwardly of the first workpiece-engaging member for lifting or placing a workpiece in position for clamping.Type: GrantFiled: June 5, 1974Date of Patent: September 14, 1976Assignee: U.S. Amada, Ltd.Inventor: Dennis Daniels
