Abstract: Cutter suitable for artificial flower stems. Typically, plastic coated wire stems are cut with hand cutters to various lengths in preparing artificial floral arrangements. The invention requires far less physical effort by the operator than is required when using conventional wire cutters. In the preferred use of the preferred embodiment of the invention, an uncut stem is inserted crosswise through two elongated holes in the guard housing. When the cutter jaws open, the stem is pushed into the open jaws and is cut to a desired length from the flower end when the jaws close. In the preferred embodiment of the invention a gear reduction motor drives an arm and cam roller assembly. That cam roller forces the top handle of the cutter downward causing the jaws to close. As the cycle continues, the cam roller raises and a spring causes the jaws to open.

The blade is arranged and dimensioned to ride in the vertical slots and to traverse the central part of the receptacle when the handle is vertically actuated to slice the food article. The bagel is held by a cradle which has blade protection lips to guard the blade cutting edge at the lower travel limit.

  • Patent number: 5377569
Abstract: A signature booklet maker (SBM) finishing apparatus for an image producing device includes a modified fold blade having a plurality of contacting teeth spaced part by a predetermined distance. The contacting teeth further include a predetermined contact surface width and a predetermined thickness. The grind direction of the teeth is specified to reduce inside sheet drag during folding. The spaced teeth are adapted drive the stitched signature set in a folding unit without contacting the stitches, thereby eliminating fold skew and inside sheet marking. Moreover, the fold blade has a predetermined hardness to ensure that the blade is not damaged during folding. The SBM further includes a trim waste elimination device and knife guard to prevent booklet trimmings from migrating throughout the trimmer unit. The knife guard eliminates the safety hazard caused by the blade in the resting position and guides air from an air blower to force booklet trimmings into a waste chute.

  • Patent number: 5292151
Abstract: A self piercing cover assembly for concealing an air bag restraint system in a vehicle passenger compartment has a retractable cutter blade that is attached to the underside of an instrument panel next to front end of an invisible door beneath the instrument panel. When the air bag inflates, the cutter blade is pushed up by a deflector shield against the bias of springs and cuts through the instrument panel at several locations making it easier for the door to swing open. The deflector shield is then bent and broken off or deformed by the inflating air bag to provide a shield for protecting against contact with the sharp edges of the cutter blade. The shield and cutter blade retract under the action of the springs so that the shielded cutting edge is below the surface of the instrument panel to provide primary protection against contact with the sharp edges of the cutter blade after the air bag collapses.

  • Patent number: 4885842
Abstract: A guard-guide device for protecting the hands of the operator of vertical sweet corn cutters and for keeping cutting knives properly aligned. The device comprises an overlapping set of guards and guides attached to the two halves of a sweet corn cutter to be spaced above and outward from the opposed half-round knives of the cutter. The half-round knives of the sweet corn cutter are mounted on top of flexible legs attached to a metal base or can be stamped from a single piece of metal. As corn is pushed down between the knives the natural outward taper of the cob causes the metal legs to move outward. The overlapping guards also expand outward at the same time and in so doing keep the metal knives aligned at 180 degrees to each other for perfect cutting of corn kernels. As the downward thrust of the corn ear is completed the overlapping guards keep the operators fingers from coming into contact with the sharp cutting edges.
