The tool is moved in a linear stamping direction, whereby the edge-folding tool folds back and then holds and compresses a margin of a panel workpiece. The tool holder frame and cutting blade are pushed farther in the linear stamping direction, while the edge-folding tool is pushed back into the tool holder frame and compresses the biasing spring, whereby the cutting blade cuts through and compresses the panel workpiece. This forms a back-folded, compressed, and trimmed rim of the finished panel in a single work step using an integrated edge-folding and cutting tool.

A cutting blade having a pair of guide legs is movable relative to the stationary blade housing and insert blade such that a cutting edge of the cutting blade interacts with a cutting edge of the insert blade to sever the elongated material. The cutting blade is received within a blade guideway formed between the blade housing and an attached guide block. The blade guideway guides the movement of the cutting blade between its retracted position and its extended position. As the cutting blade moves to the extended position, the guide legs of the cutting blade contact an outer face surface of the insert blade such that the insert blade and the cutting blade retain the desired orientation.

The preload bias minimizes the gap between the cutting blades and provides a precise, burr-free cut of a work material. Providing the compensating links on the bed knife is particularly useful in a servo-controlled version of the shear assembly since inertial forces associated with the servo-controlled, movable blade do not affect the bed knife.

A spring-mounted pressure bar bears against the edge of the cutter disk, and the sheet material is fed between the cutter disk and the pressure bar. When the cutter frame is driven in a cutting stroke, the cutter disk rolls along said pressure bar and traverses the sheet material forcing its way through the material to perform a scoring cut and causing the material to part.

Each shear station includes a self-sharpening and self-aligning anvil assembly comprising a pivotable anvil which is spring-urged to an adjustable home position. The home position of the anvil is adjusted by means of a rotatable eccentric stop. During a shearing operation, the anvil is pivoted away from and then back towards the home position. An overly thick envelope will keep the anvil pivoted away from the home position to avoid a jam condition at the shear station. A peel back station downstream of the last shear station peels back the top panel of the envelope to expose the contents thereof.
