    Abstract: The portable sawmill is constructed on a frame having a series of mechanisms for loading and manipulating a log thereon and removing boards cut from the log. Powered tines load a log onto a vertically adjustable log deck, the deck including powered mechanisms for turning and securing the log in the desired orientation for cutting. Cuts are made by a horizontally traveling band saw. The saw has no vertical adjustment. Board thickness is determined by the height of the vertically adjustable log deck. Cut boards are removed by a board sweep that pushes the board laterally from the top of the log onto a tray. The saw travels along the tray to push the board longitudinally onto a suitable platform for transport. All of the above mechanisms are controlled hydraulically from a single operator station on the mill, thus freeing the operator from many manual tasks and increasing production.

A reaction actuator is attached to a lower end of each of the lever arms to apply the reaction force. In third and fourth embodiments, a clamping force bar is positioned above the upper guide beam. Mechanical limits are provided for the vertical displacement by tilt at one side of the workpiece and on that side one of the guides of the structure supporting the bandsaw has a hydraulic changeover control in which the angle of tilt is set by adjustable screw-stops which cooperate with stop plates mounted on the structure supporting the bandsaw.

The saw carriage is movably mounted to the remainder of the saw to be substantially free to rebound or move away from the workpiece during tilting of the blade to avoid digging in or shearing off of the blade teeth and to permit close spacing of the blade guides next to the workpiece. The saw includes a feed control system having both an orifice control circuit and a support force control circuit. A method is disclosed which is comprised of using the support force circuit to vary the rate of cutting during the cut to prevent overloading of the blade and/or stalling of the machine. Sensors feedback signals which adjust the support force circuit to control feeding.
