  • Patent number: 5257560
Abstract: A trimmer apparatus (10) comprising dual moveable belts (64) and (90) for removing a dome scrap (12) from a hollow, blow molded plastic bottle (14), is described. The dual belts are supported on spaced apart pulley systems (20) and (22) forming a linear path (24) along which the bottle travels. The distance between the pulley system is adjustable for different size bottles. A groove (12A) on the dome scrap is engaged by the belts which are rotating in a similar direction. However, one belt is moving somewhat faster than the other. This provides for moving the bottle linearly along the path, while spinning the bottle. As the bottle spins past a knife blade (112) the dome scrap cut from the bottle.

Abstract: This invention uses a unique tubular cutting tool in a method for separating individual cables from the elastomeric body of a cable-type conveyor belt. The tool bores a cylindrical path through the elastomeric body coaxial with the individual longitudinal reinforcement cables. A transverse cut is then made across the belt width which just intersects the cylindrical paths which have been made around the cables. The elastomeric material can then be removed leaving only the cables exposed. The prepared belt end is then ready for application of a mechanical or vulcanized splice. The forging and the split ring are supported by a nest member assembly (C) as a trimming assembly (D) moves longitudinally to trim the forging flange and a forging bore (10). Concurrently, a trim die (90) having a cutting edge (96) interacts with a split die cutting edge (36) trimming the upper flange. The split ring restrains a central portion of the forging from puffing peripherally outward in response to the punch being urged therethrough. The interaction of the trim die and the split ring inhibits the upper part of the forging adjacent the upper flange from being drawn in toward the forging bore by the interaction between the punch and forging.

  • Patent number: 4443143
Abstract: A billet scalper including a die assembly with a scalping die, a pressing mechanism with a stem member in axial alignment with the scalping die for pressing a billet thereinto, and a chip ejector located around the circumference of the scalping die and movable axially back and forth beyond a free end face of the scalping die to remove chips therefrom. The die assembly including the scalping die is movable between a position at the center of the scalper and an outer receded position to permit easy maintenance and service of the die assembly including replacements and cleaning of scalping dies. In a preferred form, the scalper is constructed integrally with an extrusion press to perform the billet scalping operation in timed relation with the extruding operation to shorten the time of press cycle.

  • Patent number: 4404836
Abstract: An improved apparatus for and a method of trimming an outwardly directed flange at the end of a metal container body and severing the ring of scrap removed employs two substantially semicircular concave cutters supported for rotation about spaced parallel axes disposed substantially in the plane of the flange to be trimmed and driven for rotation about their respective axes to engage the flange substantially simultaneously to sever the scrap ring around substantially the entire periphery of the container. The ring of scrap is cut into four pieces either by initially die-cutting or otherwise removing segments from opposed sides of the flange tangent to the trim line prior to engagement by the rotating arcuate cutters or alternatively, the arcuate cutters may sever the scrap as a complete ring and sever the ring into pieces upon continued movement in their arcuate paths past a stationary clipper block spaced below the container flange.

  • Patent number: 4352309
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a trimming and/or fin cutting tool for removing ridges, burrs and casting seams of the kind having interchangeable cutting edges, preferably made of hard metal, in which one or more cutting lines of the tool is or are formed by a number of cutting plates (1) detachably mounted on the vertical side (3) of a tool body (2). The tool enables the rational use of the detachable cutting plates and is characterized mainly in that the cutting plates are reversible and are attached to the tool body (2) in a plane directed in the working direction of the tool, the cutting plates having spaces between them to form gaps (6) for the passage of chips. Preferably, the cutting plates along the or each cutting line are attached to the tool body (2) in rows at different heights relative to a base, the separate effective cutting edges of the cutting plates (1) along a common cutting line being arranged to overlap each other.

  • Patent number: 4324515
Abstract: A bulge (12) formed by coldwelding two wire sections (10-11) is removed by advancing the wire through a bore (91) formed in a split cutting tool (64) having a pair of stepped-back tapered surfaces (92,96) at one end. The tapered surfaces terminate along a diameter of the bore to form a pair of spaced semi-elliptical cutting surfaces (93,97) which are successively rendered effective to remove semi-circular sections of the bulge. The apparatus includes facilities (31,32) for temporarily holding the wire in place within the cutting tool (64) and a clamping arrangement (35,36) for securely holding the wire during the weld bulge removal operation.

  • Patent number: 4310112
Abstract: Apparatus for separating pendent tail scrap from the bottoms of containers advanced continuously in series by exerting a tensile force between each advancing container and the pendent tail. Each container is advanced with its pendent tail extending through a slot in a conveyor, and counter rotation rollers grip and pull the tail to cause the separation. A method of operation includes advancing a series of containers and progressively gripping the flash of each advancing container from the leading edge to the trailing edge thereof, and pulling the flash simultaneously as the gripping occurs to cause separation of the flash from the leading to the trailing edge thereof by exertion of tensile force applied between the tail and the bottom of the container.

  • Patent number: 4286490
Abstract: A force may be applied to any point along a line which may be straight or curved in a plane or in space. For this purpose a force applicator is used which includes a pressure expandable hose section closed at its ends, a reaction member against which the hose rests, and a pressure transmitting plate moving in response to an expansion of the hose. These three elements are held in an operative position relative to one another by a modular frame section which also holds a guide member and a reset element for restoring the hose section to a starting position when no pressure is applied inside the hose. A piston rod extends through the guide member and is operatively connected to the pressure transmitting plate. The modular frame section, the guide member and preferably also the reset element form a modular unit.

  • Patent number: 4277996
Abstract: The present apparatus applies force along a line or to a surface through one or more linear or rather longitudinal, elastically expandable or deformable members. The expansion of the elongated member, such as an elastic, reinforced hose or membrane, is transmitted to the tool proper, for example, a strip steel knife or a clamping device, along the entire length of the tool, whereby a linear force application is achieved. Several of such members may be arranged in parallel to obtain substantially a surface area force application. The force application member may also be curved for applying the force, such as a cutting force to an equally curved tool such as a strip steel knife. The force application member is returned to its starting position after a work stroke is completed. The work stroke is performed by expanding the member with the aid of a medium under pressure. The return is accomplished by a spring force or by a similar expansion member.
