Abstract: It is made possible to restrict the variation of the oscillation frequency of a spin torque oscillator placed in the vicinity of the recording magnetic pole. A magnetic head includes: a recording magnetic pole to generate a recording magnetic field; a spin torque oscillator formed in the vicinity of the recording magnetic pole; and a magnetic field applying unit configured to apply a magnetic field to the spin torque oscillator. The magnetic field applied to the spin torque oscillator by the magnetic field applying unit is perpendicular to a recording magnetic field generated from the recording magnetic pole.

Abstract: Magnetic reference patterns may be generated on a disk or other magnetic media without the need for seed wedges. This involves writing a first magnetic reference pattern to the disk with a servo writer. The disk may then be transferred to a hard disk drive. Control circuitry within the hard disk drive may recognize the first magnetic reference pattern and then position a RW head within the hard disk drive based on the first magnetic reference pattern. As the RW drive is accurately positioned based on the first magnetic reference pattern a second magnetic reference pattern may be written to the disk using the RW head. The RW head location is determined based on the velocity and phase between the read-write head and spiral sync marks contained within the first magnetic reference pattern.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a disk drive having a spin torque oscillator and designed to perform high frequency assisted writing. The disk drive has a magnetic disk, a magnetic head, a coil, and a drive current controller. The drive current controller controls a drive current to supply to the spin torque oscillator. To record data magnetically in the disk, the drive current controller supplies to the spin torque oscillator the drive current that changes in synchronism with the polarity inversion of the recording current supplied to the coil, which excites the recording magnetic pole of the magnetic head.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a method of forming an initial servo-pattern for self servowrite, insusceptible to constraints of an output resolution of a driver circuit for driving an actuator, and a dynamic range. According to one embodiment, a cluster pattern made up of pattern blocks, each including a burst pattern, is written by use of a write element by pressing a head-support mechanism to a crash-stop, and a pattern block is newly written with a read element in states of being positioned at an inner peripheral side edge of the cluster pattern, an outer peripheral side edge thereof, and the center of two burst patterns included in the cluster pattern, respectively, thereby increasing a width of the cluster patterns in stages, so that an initial servo pattern for use in a propagation action is formed.

Abstract: In a system and method for a non-contact measurement of the fly height of a slider above a magnetic data storage medium using electrostatic force, a slider with a read/write head flies over a magnetic data storage medium. A series of distinct voltages are applied between the slider and the magnetic data storage medium, and corresponding read-back signals are recorded. Using the recorded read-back signals, coefficients for an empirical curve-fit equation are calculated. The coefficients are normalized and converted into a fly height measurement.
