Abstract: A recording head for use in magnetic storage devices is disclosed. The recording head includes a transducer that is bi-directionally movable with respect to a surface of the magnetic storage medium, thereby enabling improved positioning of the transducer during recording head read and write operations. Various structures are disclosed to bi-directionally actuate the recording head transducer. In one embodiment, an interleaver assembly having a plurality of flexure assemblies employs a motor including magnetic portions for selective, bi-directional actuation. In another embodiment, electrostatic charges are employed in the flexure assemblies for selective actuation. Abstract: An electromagnetic field detecting element 10 includes a lamination of three insulation layers 2, 3, and 4. The dielectric breakdown strength of the insulation layer 3 is greater than the dielectric breakdown strengths of insulation layers 2 and 4. The three insulation layers 2, 3, and 4 are disposed between a pair of electrodes 5 and 6. Boundaries 7 and 8 on both ends of an overlapping region of the opposing surfaces 5a and 6a in a Z direction are apart from the insulation layer 3 by thicknesses t1 and t3 of the insulation layers 2 and 4, respectively. Between the pair of electrodes 5 and 6, ballistic current paths interposing therebetween the insulation layer 3 are formed by applying, between the pair of electrodes 5 and 6, an electric field having a magnitude which causes dielectric breakdown in the insulation layers 2 and 4 while causing no dielectric breakdown in the insulation layer 3.

Abstract: A method of examining a storage disk is proposed. The method repeats steps of: executing a writing operation and a reading operation in sequence to recording tracks at first intervals so as to check a defect in the recording tracks based on the quality of a read signal; and selecting a recording track at a position spaced by a second interval larger than the first interval from a last recording track of the sequence, the recording track being a first recording track of the recording tracks at the first intervals. The method realizes detection of a defect for recording tracks at the first intervals in a concentrated manner. A recording track is then selected at a position spaced by the second interval from the sequence. A defect can reliably be detected without increasing the total number of recording tracks selected as sample tracks.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention precisely measure clearance variation by temperature change using a value in a RW channel. In an embodiment of the present invention, an HDD measures resolution by signals in a RW channel. The measured resolution shows variations depending on temperature according to two factors. One factor is the clearance variation depending on the temperature and the other is the variation in operational property of the RW channel depending on the temperature. The HDD compensates for the temperature variation of the resolution according to the two factors. The HDD uses two kinds of sensed temperature. One corresponds to the temperature inside an enclosure in which head sliders are provided and the other corresponds to the temperature of the chip in which the RW channel is implemented. Sensing the drive temperature and the channel temperature independently achieves precise compensation for the variation in the measured resolution caused by clearance variation and channel property.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention help to precisely control the clearance between a head and disk for the pressure without using a barometric sensor. In an embodiment of the present invention, an HDD determines a clearance from variations in operational parameters, and further determines a variation in pressure by deducting the clearance variation caused by a variation in temperature from the clearance. When the HDD controls the clearance in accordance with the pressure change, the HDD checks for head-disk contact. The accuracy and reliability in pressure measurement (clearance measurement) using operational parameters are not high. Therefore, confirming the pressure measurement by the presence or absence of head-disk contact eliminates head-disk contact in the following read/write operation to attain a securer margin for the clearance.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention help to perform appropriate servo control in response to detected vibration in a disk drive device having a vibration sensor. In an embodiment of the present invention, an HDD switches a correction servo mode to perform vibration correction in head positioning and a normal servo mode not to perform the vibration correction. The HDD performs servo positioning in either one of the serve modes and determines servo positioning accuracy in the servo mode from the measured positional error signal. The HDD obtains data indicating the servo positioning accuracy in the other servo mode from a table. The HDD compares the accuracy in the two servo modes and selects the servo mode with higher accuracy. The table contains previous measurements on servo positioning accuracy in the servo modes.

Abstract: For a feedforward controller for controlling a position of a magnetic head in a magnetic disk drive, a vibration of the magnetic head is measured in a state in which a magnetic disk is rotated in the magnetic disk drive. From a spectrum of the measured vibration, a flutter frequency which is a frequency of a vibration caused by the magnetic disk fluttering is obtained. A filter is designed for each flutter frequency having a peak of a gain for a respective one of obtained flutter frequencies. The feedforward controller for controlling a position of the magnetic head is obtained by combining filters designed for the respective flutter frequencies.
