Abstract: A method for inserting an intra-aortic balloon device into a patient without using an insertion sheath is provided. Additionally, a hemostasis sheath is described for use with the insertion method. The hemostasis sheath may be incorporated onto the balloon catheter during manufacture before attachment of the intra-aortic balloon bladder. The hemostasis sheath is tapered from a smaller outside diameter at the point closest to the balloon bladder gradually increasing in diameter towards a large outside diameter at the end opposite the balloon bladder. The hemostasis sheath may also have an extended tip of constant outside diameter at its proximal end to facilitate insertion through the skin. If bleeding occurs after insertion of the intra-aortic balloon according to the invention, the hemostasis sheath is slid into the insertion site to stop the bleeding.
Abstract: A liquid crystal display (LCD) cell comprising a twist nematic liquid crystal disposed between two electrode plates and polarizers and having a positive dielectric anisotropy. The optical path difference .DELTA.n.d is 0.2 to 0.7 .mu.m. The absolute value of the twist angle .phi. can be between 10.degree. and 80.degree., the angle .psi. between the polarizers can be between 80.degree. and 110.degree. and the angle .theta. between the surface orientation direction and the polarization direction on the screen on the light incidence side can be between -10.degree. and 60.degree., preferably so that the polarizers are symmetrical of the nematic directors.
Abstract: There is described a process for the manufacture of a compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is lower alkyl, lower alkanoyl, lower alkenyl or the group --CH.sub.2 COOR.sup.2 or --C(CH.sub.3).sub.2 COOR.sup.2 and R.sup.2 is a readily cleavable group, by reacting a compound of the formula ##STR2## wherein R is lower alkyl, with an alkali metal allylate and reacting the resulting compound of the formula ##STR3## wherein M is an alkali metal atom, with a compound of the formula R.sup.1 -X, wherein X is a leaving group. Abstract: There is disclosed a process for producing a laminar electrode. The method comprises successive superposition of an insulating support, a conductive layer, a stable-potential internal reference element and an ion-selective diaphragm, all of which are protected by a mask which is impermeable to aqueous solutions. A completely tight seal between the mask and the ion-selective diaphragm is formed by casting the diaphragm in the form of a solution containing a binder which dissolves with and intimately mixes with the mask material.
