  • Patent number: 7574183
Abstract: Rapid text entry using a wireless telephone is facilitated by correlating at least some of the letters represented by a number key to a two-key combination, namely, the number key and an indicator key such as the star key (which, when depressed along with a number key, can indicate the second letter on the number key) and the pound key (which, when depressed with a number key, can indicate the third letter on the key). Thus, at most two key strokes are required to positively indicate any letter on a numbers-only keypad.

  • Patent number: 7561081
Abstract: A signal compression optimization system between a communication network and wireless user equipment advantageously selects an optimized decompressor when feasible for reduced content processing latency and otherwise selects a virtual machine decompressor, such as a Universal Decompressor Virtual Machine (UDVM) that interprets the received decompression bytecode. Since the UDVM is not optimized for any particular decompression algorithm and suffers by the requisite delays associated with analyzing each statement in the bytecode before execution, being able to avoid use of the UDVM whenever possible enhances user experience in presenting wirelessly received signaling messages or media content.

  • Patent number: 7561877
Abstract: Apparatus and methods for managing predetermined malfunction events in a wireless device operating in a wireless communications network. Malfunction event data and operational data are recorded by the wireless device based on a selected malfunction event tracking configuration. Further, a recovery module associated with the wireless device operates to attempt to recover information leading up to and including the malfunction event. The collected information may be transmitted to a user manager in the form of a malfunction event log. The malfunction event log may be analyzed to characterize the malfunction, and is particularly useful for determining the sequence and identity of events leading to the malfunction, including a crash, freeze and reset.

  • Patent number: 7558226
Abstract: A Wireless Communication Device (WCD) inter-operates with a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) communication system. The WCD operates in an idle mode wherein the WCD transitions between a sleep state to conserve power and an awake state to receive one or more paging signals. The WCD attempts to reacquire a first pilot signal associated with a first paging signal that was previously being demodulated, and a second pilot signal that was previously being tracked. The WCD performs a handoff from the first paging signal to a second paging signal associated with the second pilot signal when the attempt to reacquire the first pilot signal fails and the attempt to reacquire the second pilot signal is successful.

  • Patent number: 7505594
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a discontinuous transmission process. Audio information is digitized and provided to a vocoder. A voice activity level is determined from the digitized audio signal, and if voice activity is present, active vocoder frames are generated at a predetermined output rate. If voice activity is not detected, inactive vocoder frames are generated. During transitions between periods of speech activity and speech inactivity, transition frames are generated, the transition frames comprising background noise information.

  • Patent number: 7499698
Abstract: Techniques for synchronization of stored service parameters are disclosed. In one aspect, a configuration identifier is transmitted from a mobile station to a base station, and compared with an identifier generated in the base station. If the identifiers match, the configuration is used for communication. In another aspect, the identifier is generated by selecting an identifier associated with a configuration from a configuration table. In yet another aspect, the identifier is generated by computing a cyclic redundancy check (CRC) of the configuration. Various other aspects are also presented. These aspects have the benefit of preventing attempted use of unsynchronized stored service parameters and associated call setup failures and subsequent renegotiation, with the net effect of reducing call setup time and more efficient use of system resources.

  • Patent number: 7472148
Abstract: Method and apparatus for generating random numbers are disclosed. In one aspect, a method for generating random numbers for use in a wireless communication device provides for generating random numbers, gathering a sample of the generated random numbers, and computing at least one metric, such as mean value, standard deviation, and/or entropy. The method further provides for comparing the metric with a corresponding reference value and adjusting the metric based on a result of said comparison so that the generated random numbers achieve a desired distribution. In another aspect, an apparatus for generating random numbers includes an analog noise generator and hardware components for generating random numbers and feedback values to adjust the random numbers. The apparatus further includes a processor capable of executing instructions to carry out control algorithms for adjusting the random numbers.

  • Patent number: 7433321
Abstract: Schemes to time-align transmissions from multiple base stations to a terminal. To achieve time-alignment, differences between the arrival times of transmissions from the base stations, as observed at the terminal, are determined and provided to the system and used to adjust the timing at the base stations such that terminal-specific radio frames arrive at the terminal within a particular time window. In one scheme, a time difference between two base stations is partitioned into a frame-level time difference and a chip-level time difference. Whenever requested to perform and report time difference measurements, the terminal measures the chip-level timing for each candidate base station relative to a reference base station. Additionally, the terminal also measures the frame-level timing and includes this information in the time difference measurement only if required. Otherwise, the terminal sets the frame-level part to a predetermined value (e.g., zero).

  • Patent number: 7415026
Abstract: A method and apparatus for session release in a communication system supporting Internet Protocol (IP) communications. In one embodiment, when the MS has lost a bearer connection (i.e., PPP session), the notification is provided by a Packet Data Service Node (PDSN) to the serving Session control Manager (SCM) via IP multicast. If two PPP sessions are active for a given IP communication, and one PPP session is not lost, the PDSN associated with the active PPP session sends a correction message to ignore any notification message sent by the other PDSN. In an alternate embodiment, the Authentication Authorization Accounting (AAA) server uses start and stop accounting requests, received from PDSNs, to determine when to notify the serving SCM to terminate an IP communication.

  • Patent number: 7369529
Abstract: A method of supporting multiple PPP instances between a single wireless device and a wireless network using a single IP address and IP stack allows applications to exercise different link characteristics for individual PPP sessions. Routing based on parameters other than IP address, such as QOS parameters, that allow applications to utilize different types of services for same client server endpairs is provided. A PDSN determines whether or not multiple PPP sessions terminate at the same endpoint within a mobile device. A mobile device initiates a subsequent multiple PPP connection by specifying the IP address of an initial connection in the IP Address Configuration Option during IPCP negotiation for the subsequent connection. This address may be obtained from the IPCP phase of the initial PPP connection negotiation using Simple IP, or a Mobile IP Home Address obtained from the Mobile IP registration during establishment of the initial PPP session.

  • Patent number: 7355999
Abstract: A method and apparatus for reducing transmission delay in a wireless communication system that carries packetized voice and data information. Interruptions in the traffic channels cause loss of synchronization between a header compressor and a header decompressor. Rather than transmitting resynchronization information on the traffic channel, the information dropped by an interruption is re-transmitted on a non-traffic channel in parallel with the traffic channel. At the remote station, information from the traffic channel and the non-traffic channel is reassembled before input into the decompressor. Alternatively, the non-traffic channel can be used to carry overflow information so that a higher average data rate can be achieved than the average data rate of the traffic channel alone.

  • Patent number: 7003114
Abstract: A method and apparatus for achieving crypto-syncronization in a packet data communication system employing cryptographic communications. In a transmitter, a state vector is incremented at a predetermined rate and is provided to an encryption module. The encryption module uses the state vector to sequentially encrypt the data frames. During periods of frame dropping prior to encryption, the state vector is disabled, thereby allowing for sequential encryption of the data frames. In a receiver, during a frame dropping condition, the state vector is advanced in proportion to the number of frames dropped. During an underflow condition at the receiver, the state vector is disabled for the duration of the underflow condition, and enabled once the underflow condition has passed.
