  • Patent number: 5615132
Abstract: A three-dimensional position and orientation tracking system uses accelerometers to measure acceleration of a moveable object (e.g., a head-mounted display unit or a data glove). A tracking processor generates both position and orientation information on the object relative to a simulation environment as a function of the acceleration data. In one embodiment, a simplified radar-based tracking system is disposed relative to the object and periodically provides additional tracking data on the object to the tracking processor. The tracking processor uses the additional data to correct the position and orientation information using a feedback filter process. The position and orientation information signals generated can be used, for example, in a simulation or virtual reality application. Position and orientation information is received by a simulation processor relative to the object. The simulation processor modifies a simulation environment as a function of the position and orientation information received.

  • Patent number: 5610927
Abstract: An integrated circuit is described having a scan chain of the JTAG type in which there are provided a plurality of serially connected test cells 2. The test cells serve the additional function of operating during the normal operation of the integrated circuit to store signal values that are logically combined (compared) with signal values generated by the integrated circuit to yield control signals into for controlling the operation of the integrated circuit. This allows the storage capacity of the test cells to be utilised during normal operation when they would otherwise be idle.

  • Patent number: 5594169
Abstract: Single and dual wire gyroscopes determine the orientation and attitude of a device using optical sensing of radiation interrupted by current-carrying, vibrating tensioned wires within a magnetic fields. The tensioned wires vibrate between end nodes within the respective magnetic fields to provide both sustaining oscillatory drives and the sensing of velocity in the directions perpendicular to the respective magnetic fields. Lateral displacements of tensioned wires in directions parallel to the associated magnetic fields are sensed using radiant illumination of the wires and radiation sensing below the wires to provide displacement signals. Precession of wires in vibratory trajectories out of planes perpendicular to respective magnetic fields are controlled by selectively twisting and bending the tensioned wires between mounting ends.

  • Patent number: 5592602
Abstract: A multimedia authoring program includes a multimedia effect tool for applying and controlling direction of motion, visual, and sound effects for multimedia objects, including text, graphics, and the like, in a multimedia art work. The tool provides a set of palettes, each including a plurality of icons representing different motion and visual effects. The effects are applied to an object in each of a number of time segments that partition the overall duration of the object. The time segments can be enlarged or reduced as desired. For some time segments, including an entry and an exit time segment, there is an associated motion direction and visual effect palette. The motion direction palette allows selection of an icon representing a particular motion that is applied to the object during the runtime of the multimedia art work, whereby the object moves in the selected direction during the associated time segment.

  • Patent number: 5583804
Abstract: A data processing system is described utilizes a multiplier-accumulator 108 that performs both a first class of multiply-accumulate instructions and a second class of multiply-accumulate instructions. The first class of multiply-accumulate instructions are of the form N*N+N.fwdarw.N and the second class of multiply-accumulate instructions are of the form N*N+2N.fwdarw.2N. The second class of multiply-accumulate instructions provide a greater precision of arithmetic in a single instruction and avoid the use of excessive instruction set space by being constrained that the result is written back into the two registers from which the 2N-bit accumulate value was taken. The multiplier-accumulator also provides N*N.fwdarw.N and N*N.fwdarw.2N multiplication operations.

  • Patent number: 5571172
Abstract: Method and apparatus for reconstructing target tissue by grafting uses a stabilizing balloon cannula having an endoscope for visualizing the placement of the graft during the procedure. The method and apparatus advances a sheathed graft to the target tissue, releases the graft at the target site, occludes the target tissue, deploys a graft stabilizing catheter, dissects a cavity outside the target tissue site, maintains the dissection site, and then secures the graft to the target tissue. Alternatively, the method and apparatus creates a cavity extending to the target tissue using an everting balloon cannula with an endoscope, maintains the dissection site, introduces the graft to the target site via the dissection site, and then secures the graft to the target tissue.

  • Patent number: 5568646
Abstract: A data processing system is described utilising multiple instruction sets. The program instruction words are supplied to a processor core 2 via an instruction pipeline 6. As program instruction words of a second instruction set pass along the instruction pipeline, they are mapped to program instruction words of the first instruction set. The second instruction set has program instruction words of a smaller bit size than those of the first instruction set and is a subset of the first instruction set. Smaller bit size improves code density, whilst the nature of the second instruction set as a subset of the first instruction set enables a one-to-one mapping to be efficiently performed and so avoid the need for a dedicated instruction decoder for the second instruction set.
