  • Patent number: 7927056
Abstract: The invention pertains to a book casing device with support plates of a circulation conveyor that transport the books astraddle in a vertical position and with a book delivery unit consisting of a stripping element that is arranged in the plane of motion of the support plates and features a through-opening for the support plates, wherein the downwardly moving books are supported on said stripping element in order to be released from the support plates, and with a delivery device for the subsequent lateral delivery of the books referred to the plane of motion of the support plates. In order to realize a reliable and gentle delivery of the books with high cycle rates, the invention proposes that the delivery unit comprises at least one means for continuously supporting a book while the book is transferred from the stripping position into a delivery position. The books are preferably transferred into their delivery position while being supported by the stripping element.

  • Patent number: 7927055
Abstract: The invention pertains to a binding-in machine (40) for pressing in and joint forming books (1) which comprises a multitude of pressing devices (1) and assigned joint forming devices (42), as well as devices for feeding the books (1) and aligning the cased book blocks (2) relative to the cases (3) and for post-forming the rounded book blocks, wherein a forming rail (43.5) is provided that acts upon the fore edge cut (1b) of the book block, and wherein the book is supported on the spine (1a) and/or in the case joints (1c). The books are laterally taken hold of by means of a book gripper (30.1 or 30.2) that moves back and forward and transfers the vertically positioned books from an upstream transfer position (20.11 or 20.12) between the opened pressing plates (41.1) of a pressing device (41), wherein the books are deposited on an alignment table (43.1) with their spine (1a) in order to subsequently align and post-form the books (1) within the pressing device (41).

  • Patent number: 7927053
Abstract: In a binding-in machine (40) for pressing in and joint forming books (1), the invention proposes that the delivery device (45) features a book gripper (45.1) with a pair of opposite joint gripping rails (45.4, 45.5) that take hold of the books (1) in the formed case joints (1c) and the distance between which can be varied, wherein the formed and pressed-in books (1) can be removed from the pressing devices (41) with said book gripper. The books (1) are reliably separated from the pressing plates (41.1) due to the inwardly directed movement of the joint gripping rails and subsequently pulled out of the pressing devices (41). The gripped removal makes it possible to realize a secondary forming or stabilizing of the formed case joints and to produce a glued connection between the case and the book block.

  • Patent number: 7927054
Abstract: In order to realize a particularly compact binding-in machine (40), the pressing devices (41) with the firmly assigned joint forming devices (42) can be driven along a circulation path that essentially lies in a vertical plane, wherein the pressing plates (41.1) of the pressing devices (41) are oriented parallel to this plane. The pressing devices (41) and the joint forming devices (42) are simply arranged on a rotor (40.3) that rotates about a horizontal axis (40.4), wherein the axis of rotation (40.4) of the rotor is oriented perpendicular to the pressing plates (41.0). This significantly simplifies the infeed and the delivery of the books (1).

  • Patent number: 7918775
Abstract: In a method for producing a hinge-like bend line (3a,b, 4a,b or 5a,b) in a sheet (1) of paper, paperboard, cardboard or foil, particularly a brochure cover, by rotatively driven tools (7.1, 7.2), the bending line (3a,b, 4a,b or 5a,b) is produced by roll bending without scoring the material in the form of a scoring bead. The roll bending is preferably realized by the cooperation of a tool edge (12a) of a first rotary tool member (8.1) with a conical outside surface (11a) of a second rotary tool member (9.1). The roll bending process lowers the bending resistance of the sheet (1) in the region of the bending point (3a,b, 4a,b or 5a,b), wherein the sheet (1) is simultaneously pre-bent in a certain direction along the bending point (3a,b, 4a,b), e.g., in order to take into account the position of the brochure cover on the book block at the spine edges (the sheet is pre-bent inward in a U-shaped fashion).

  • Patent number: 7900362
Abstract: A disposable safety scalpel comprises a handle and a blade carrier, which fit together such that the blade carrier can shift between a retracted position whereby a front portion of the handle covers or otherwise blocks contact with the sharp edge of the blade, and an extended position whereby the sharp edge of the blade protrudes beyond the handle. The handle has a substantially flat base portion that can be held by the forefinger of the surgeon for shifting of the carrier with the thumb between retracted and extended positions. When the carrier and blade are extended, the surgeon can hold only the base of the handle between the thumb and forefinger for cutting during surgery. The shifting between the retracted and deployed positions with only the fingers of one hand can be readily accomplished even in the presence of slippery fluids during surgery.
