  • Patent number: 4323844
Abstract: A system for testing magnetic tape comprising a pair of magnetic head assemblies positioned at a fixed length along the path of magnetic recording tape. A read-out signal of the first magnetic head is delayed by a delay circuit by time t=l/V, where l is the length between the first magnetic head and the second magnetic head, and V is the tape feeding speed. A logical AND circuit and a logical exclusive-OR circuit are provided for receiving the output of the delay circuit and the read-out signal of the second magnetic head. When the AND circuit provides an output signal, it is recognized that both the first and second magnetic heads have sensed a permanent defect. When the exclusive-OR circuit provides an output signal, it is recognized that either the first magnetic head or second magnetic head has sensed a temporary defect. Accordingly, both a permanent defect and a temporary defect are detected by running magnetic tape only once in a predetermined direction.

  • Patent number: 4307335
Abstract: A system for testing open thermocouples in a data acquisition system in which each of a plurality of thermocouples is sequentially read. Each thermocouple has an associated filter capacitor and resistance network and each has a different common-mode voltage with respect to a reference potential. Charging means is effective to charge each filter capacitor in sequence after a reading has been taken. For a normal thermocouple, the filter capacitor discharges through the associated resistance and thermocouple prior to the next sequential reading of that thermocouple. For an open thermocouple the filter capacitor remains charged indicating that the thermocouple is open at the time of the next sequential reading of that thermocouple.

  • Patent number: 4280396
Abstract: A hydraulic oscillator in which a piston reciprocates between first and second positions in a cylinder. A reversing pilot valve controls fluid flow to ends of the cylinder and flow through first and second pilot passages control the reversing operation of the pilot valve. The cylinder has a pilot channel or groove coupled to a pilot supply line. The piston has (1) a first logic channel for fluidly coupling the pilot channel and first pilot passage as the piston approaches the second position and (2) a second logic channel for fluidly coupling the pilot channel and second pilot passage as the piston approaches the first position thereby to alternately reverse the pilot valve and produce the reciprocation of the piston.

  • Patent number: 4280212
Abstract: A CMOS timing device having a primary oscillatory reference source, a chain of series connected bistable divider stages whose data outputs are applied to a decoder/display by way of a multiplexing network. The multiplexing network is comprised of a plurality of multiplex sections, each section having a plurality of data transmission channels or paths. Each channel includes a plurality of MOS devices of a first type connected to a common bus. All channels driving the common bus share a single MOS device of a second type which provides a complementary function with respect to the first type to establish predetermined operating voltage levels for the data logic states carried by the common bus. The data on the common bus of each multiplex section is stored in a CMOS bistable latching type flip-flop whose regenerative feedback path is MOS device controlled.

  • Patent number: 4276810
Abstract: A programmed valve system for positioning control having a first two stage valve assembly operable for raising a load and a second two stage valve assembly for lowering the load. Each of the second stages has a poppet with a parabolic contour which is dimensioned with orifice parameters to provide substantially linear flow rate change for minimized shock when one of the second stage poppets closes and the other opens. In the raise assembly, the pilot stage outlet orifice has a cross-sectional area substantially larger than that of the inlet orifice so that the second stage poppet opens much more rapidly than the closing thereof thereby to minimize overshoot when the pilot stage is actuated to the open position.

  • Patent number: 4275968
Abstract: Printer having a sheet feed and drum transport assembly and an array transport assembly, these assemblies having critical operating parameters whose profile is measured during a nonprinting cycle executed for that purpose. These critical operating parameter values are sorted and used as the values of the respective critical parameters during the printing cycles after the profiling cycle. The values may be updated according to detected variances occurring during the printing cycles. In addition, the value of the paper position is determined during an initial printing cycle and stored and used in subsequent cycles.

  • Patent number: 4268838
Abstract: A thermal recording system in which a thermal treated paper is printed by a thermal head having a series of aligned heat-generating resistor elements and current-holding elements like SCR (thyristor) corresponding to each of said heat-generating resistor elements for holding electric current. The power source for heating said resistor elements is a periodic voltage like a commercial alternate current (A.C.), or a pulsating current which is obtained by rectifying the commercial alternate current. The printing to each cell is accomplished within a single period of said periodic power source, and the duration of heating the resistor elements within said single period is controlled according to the peak voltage or current of the power source, in order to provide the constant concentration or density of printing. Thus, means for converting the peak value of the power source to the time delay is provided.

  • Patent number: 4229968
Abstract: A gas measurement and analysis system having a gas chromatograph which converts a gas mixture from a source to a time varying continuous signal. This signal is sampled and converted to digital form by an analog to digital converter which provides a stream of amplitude dependent digital values at equally spaced time intervals. These sampled signals are applied to a rate of change estimator system which provides an accurate estimate of the time derivative of the sampled signal by means of recursive digital feedback. • Patent number: 4035749
Abstract: A microwave tuning screw assembly mounted in an opening in a cavity or waveguide and providing positive shorting at an inner wall of the cavity or waveguide. A chuck section is disposed in the opening and has elastically deformable fingers. A tuning screw section is received within the fingers so that as the fingers are elastically deformed inwardly, they grip the tuning screw section and thus provide positive shorting from the inner wall through the chuck section to the tuning screw section.

  • Patent number: 4020786
Abstract: The signal assembly includes a deflated balloon capable of retaining a lighter-than-air gas. It also includes a container for the gas under pressure which has an opening in it. The open edges of the balloon in deflated form are sealingly fixed to the opening. The balloon is retained in deflated form within the container by means of a lid or cap for the container which prevents outward movement of the balloon through the opening which would be necessary to inflate the balloon. The lid is normally attached to the container in a way sufficient to prevent escape of its contents except when the assembly is to be actuated. In one form of the invention, the balloon is disposed and retained in deflated form toward the open top of a rigid container having a lid that is tightly fitted around the upper edge of the container.
