  • Patent number: 5329507
Abstract: A device that uses a laser beam to access data stored on an optical disk is disclosed. The laser beam is confined in a thin film optical waveguide having electrodes mounted onto the surface of the waveguide. The electrodes are arranged to form a coarse adjustment section, which adjusts the beam's direction to coincide with the data track of the optical disk to be accesses, and an electro-optic focus, which focuses the beam onto the surface of the optical disk. The electrodes are selectivity supplied with voltages from a control circuit. When the electrodes are energized, the index of refraction of the waveguide is altered, causing the beam direction and focus to be adjusted so as to coincide with and become focused onto the data track. After reflection off the data track, the beam impinges upon an array of photodetectors. The photodetectors provide a feedback signal to the control circuit which is used to continually adjust the beam direction and focus as the optical disk is read.

  • Patent number: 5326120
Abstract: A wheelchair having a tubular frame comprising a pair of wheel-supporting, horizontally-disposed tubes clamped at their rear ends to upright posts for vertical adjustment of rear wheels mounted thereon. A pair of seat-supporting tubes pivotally connected at their rear ends to the upright posts, above the wheel supporting tubes, are also pivotally connected at their forward ends to links which are rigidly fixed at their lower ends to said wheel supporting tubes. Safety is improved by the rigid connections without significantly impairing the adjustment options.

  • Patent number: 5325791
Abstract: A coupling mechanism for use on a railcar moving vehicle designed to couple with European-type railway cars having an end sill at each end of the car which supports a centrally disposed draft hook and a pair of buffers mounted one at each end of the end sill, the coupling mechanism including a casting which moves laterally on a plurality of rollers, a crossbar or lifting beam carried on the end of the casting and pivotal relative thereto about a vertical axis, a pair of lifting forks carried on the respective ends of the crossbar, and a pair of buffer plates carried at opposite ends of the crossbar and positioned to push against corresponding buffers on a railway car. The coupling mechanism also includes a sensing device which controls lateral movement of the casting during a pushing or pulling operation in accordance with relative lateral movement of the railcar end sill and buffers.

  • Patent number: 5320886
Abstract: This invention relates primarily to organofunctional monomers, predominantly dimethacrylates and/or diacrylates containing one or more (predominantly two carboxyl groups, with moieties that provide sufficient affinity with water to allow any desired amount of water and/or miscible fugitive solvents to be mixed homogeneously with these monomers and formulations containing them. The activity of water in the monomer formulations can be adjusted so that it is equal to the water activity in biological tissues. This promotes biocompatibility and enhances the adhesive characteristics of polymers prepared from these formulations. Probability statistics are disclosed that optimize the compositions of polymer reaction products.

  • Patent number: 5314414
Abstract: A needle guard and a method to prevent needle stick injuries are disclosed, for use with a hypodermic syringe or other instrument with a sharp point. The needle guard, comprises a protective sleeve with a fitting, that may be used with or added to a syringe and needle assembly. The interior of the fitting contains an annular core adapted to permanently engage the fitting on the syringe barrel. Radial arms extending from the core align and cooperate with the slidable sleeve. Prior to and during use of the needle, the sleeve remains in a retracted position covering the barrel of the syringe. After the needle has been used, the sleeve is pushed forward into its locked extended position, so that the end of the sleeve extends beyond the tip of the needle. The tip of the needle is thereby shielded, preventing accidental sticks.

  • Patent number: 5315650
Abstract: A transmit path limiting circuit that allows other equipment, such as a caller identification device, to more readily decipher information signals on a telephone line. The circuit includes a ring detector, register, and controller. The ring detector senses that a call is incoming to the telephone and responsively provides an initiation signal. The register normally transmits outgoing signals from the telephone to the telephone network. After receiving the initiation signal, however, the controller enables the register, for a predetermined interval, to transmit a quiet code in lieu of any signal being transmitted from the telephone. Consequently, reflected noise is lowered during the predetermined interval, so that the caller identification box may more easily interpret data on the telephone line.
