  • Patent number: 8041099
Abstract: A check verification system for verifying checks presented to a vendor at a vendor location, the vendor location being remotely located from a bank issuing the checks, the check verification system comprising: an input device located at the vendor location, the input device having means for collecting check information including an amount of the check and an account number; and means for communicating with the bank to verify that the account number corresponds to an account of a plurality of legitimate accounts with the bank and provide a hold upon funds in the account in the amount of the check if the account number corresponds to one of the legitimate accounts with the bank and if sufficient funds exist in the legitimate account to hold.

  • Patent number: 8035757
Abstract: The system of the invention involves an anti-slip alignment plate used with a mounting bracket for mounting a device, such as a flat video screen having video mounting holes. The anti-slip plate is aligned with protrusions, or other means, with a plurality engagement members on the bracket which receives the protrusions. Once the plate and bracket have mated in a particular position, a fastener can secure the plate, bracket and device together. The result is that the fastener need not be torqued so tightly because slippage is prevented by the engagement points on the anti-slip plate. Furthermore, the number of position available for the anti-slip plate to secure the device is often substantially greater than would be achieve if the bracket merely had series of adjacent mounting holes.

  • Patent number: 8032031
Abstract: A fiber optic GPS signal device and method comprising a VCSEL multimode transmitter having a gain that, together with the GPS antenna gain, is greater than the VCSEL multimode transmitter noise. When in operative communication, via a long length of multimode fiber, i.e., up to 2000 feet and greater, with a fiber optic receiver, the GPS signals are transmitted at, inter alia, L1 and L2 frequencies with minimal degradation over the length of multimode fiber. The present invention may be used in a variety of GPS transmission applications requiring long lengths of cabling. For example, the invention is particularly useful when the GPS antenna is located on top of an office building or cell phone tower and remotely from the GPS receiver and for use in high-volume commercial telephone synchronizing (DTMF) applications.

  • Patent number: 8030039
Abstract: A method for the production of fermentable sugars and high viscosity cellulose from lignocellulosic material in a batch or continuous process is provided. Lignocellulosic material is fractionated in a fashion that cellulose is removed as pulp, cooking chemicals can be reused, lignin is separated for the production of process energy, and hemicelluloses are converted into fermentable sugars, while fermentation inhibitors are removed. High yield production of alcohols or organic acids can be obtained from this method using the final reaction step.

  • Patent number: 8015028
Abstract: Generally, the present invention is directed to marketing techniques and more particularly to direct-to-patient marketing for medical devices, pharmaceutical drugs, and biotechnology products. The approach presented here may also be applied to the recruitment of patients for clinical trials evaluation including tracking outcomes after treatment. An embodiment of the invention includes the steps of finding potential patients, qualifying potential patients, connecting potential patients to preferred physicians, and tracking the patient's progress through the appointment phase and tracking outcomes.

  • Patent number: 8004300
Abstract: A circuit board tester and method that precisely aligns the probe plate and circuit board is disclosed. With a circuit board and probe plate mounting within a housing having a top and bottom, hinged together, at closure there may be slight misalignments of the two. By making one of the two plates floating, or laterally slideable with respect to each other, it is possible to make final alignment at closure. One of the two plates can be provided with a pin and the other with a pin receiving alignment block. With the lateral sideability, the pin and block can insure proper probe alignment. Additional systems for correcting misaligned pins or blocks are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7995746
Abstract: Communication unit comprising a housing (1) in which at least one transducer is placed, and on which a microphone arm (2) is suspended. The housing also has an ear hook (6) for fastening the communication unit to the head of a user. The microphone arm (2) is pivotally connected to the housing (1) by a hinge link (3, 4, 5) at an outer area of the housing, and so that the microphone arm (2) can be moved between a position in which it lies up against the housing (1), and a position in which it extends away from the housing. The microphone arm has a length, which in the main is less than or of the same order as the greatest extent of the housing, so that in the folded-in state the microphone arm does not project out over the circumference of the housing. The communication unit can be used on both the right and the left side of the head, in that the ear hook (6) can be suspended in two different positions.

  • Patent number: 7986101
Abstract: A light system that is controllable to generate a plurality of selected lighting effects, the light system includes a main processor, the main processor being in communication with a plurality of light sources; and each of the plurality of light sources having a distinct, known address whereby one of more of the light sources are individually addressable by the main processor, a known address being received by a selected light source of the plurality of light sources and acting to set the selected light source of the plurality of light sources in a disposition to receive a subsequent command from the main processor for generating a selected lighting effect. A light source and a method of forming a light system are further included.

  • Patent number: 7973486
Abstract: A system and method of controlling self powered decorative devices using EMF emanating from, for example, a light string on a Christmas tree. The decorative devices sense the presence of EMF from the light string and actuate in response thereto and turn off when the field disappears, thereby saving energy. In an alternate embodiment, the EMF source is capable of modulation and the slave decorations are coded and tuned to specific EMF characteristics, such as frequency. The master EMF source transmits the EMF of different characteristic thereby causing the coded slave decorations to operate in a synchronized matter. The system may also be responsive to music or other inputs to create special decorative effects.

  • Patent number: 7970026
Abstract: A continuously pumped, mode-locked laser is disclosed, which includes a cavity dumper that can remove a constant fraction of the light from the cavity at every 1/f period of time, independent of the time at which the first pulse in a train is initiated. The cavity dumper includes a modulator and two output arms, denoted as a primary output arm and a secondary output arm. When a user desires a train of pulses, the pulses are directed to the primary output arm. Between trains of pulses, when no pulse is desired by the user, the pulses are directed to the secondary output arm, which terminates in an absorber or at a secondary optical system. In this manner, the energy contained in each output pulse is essentially constant, from pulse-to-pulse and from train-to-train. This may overcome the disadvantage of many lasers that have a single output arm, in which the first pulse in a train may have an energy that depends on the length of the inactive period that immediately precedes the train.
