Patent number: 6051942Abstract: A method for controlling the average voltage applied to a phase winding of a reluctance machine during periods of current increase, stable current control, and current decrease to improve machine efficiency and thereby reduce acoustical noise produced by the machine and unwanted vibration. According to one aspect, a method is provided whereby a maximum duty cycle is selected and voltage is applied to the phase winding during the period of current increase according to the maximum duty cycle until the current reaches a desired peak current value and thereafter the voltage applied to the phase winding is equal to the lesser of the voltage required to keep the phase current at the predetermined peak current value or the voltage corresponding to the maximum duty cycle.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1996Date of Patent: April 18, 2000Assignee: Emerson Electric Motor Co.Inventor: Alan P. Patent number: 6052797Abstract: Two data storage systems are interconnected by a data link for remote mirroring of data. Each volume of data is configured as local, primary in a remotely mirrored volume pair, or secondary in a remotely mirrored volume pair. Normally, a host computer directly accesses either a local or a primary volume, and data written to a primary volume is automatically sent over the link to a corresponding secondary volume. Each remotely mirrored volume pair can operate in a selected synchronization mode including synchronous, semi-synchronous, adaptive copy--remote write pending, and adaptive copy--disk. Each write request transmitted over the link between the data storage systems includes not only the data for at least one track in the secondary volume to be updated but also the current "invalid track" count for the secondary volume as computed by the data storage system containing the corresponding primary volume.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1998Date of Patent: April 18, 2000Assignee: EMC CorporationInventors: Yuval Ofek, Natan Vishlitzky, Haim Kopylovitz

Patent number: 6047646Abstract: Assemblable display unit including integrated pallets. The display unit includes a tray configured to accommodate and receive goods and a plurality of integrated foot structures generally extending downwardly away from the periphery of the tray and supporting the tray. The foot structures are horizontally spaced from each other, defining at least one pallet aperture or channel sized to receive a loading finger. The size of the aperture varies depending upon the equipment to be used in lifting and transporting the display, whether it be a forklift, pallet jack or handcart. The display can be sized depending on the merchandise to be displayed, and thus the foot structures may define more than one opening to allow better ease of transport. The foot structures include only non-vertically-oriented raw edges to prevent water wicking. The display units is formed from blanks of a foldable sheet material, such as double-faced corrugated fiberboard.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1997Date of Patent: April 11, 2000Assignee: Tenneco Packaging Inc.Inventor: Richard R. Patent number: 6048954Abstract: The development of polymer binder compositions that provide novel binders for high temperature inorganic particulates, especially metal and ceramic particulates is described. These materials are especially useful in a laser beam sintering process known as SLS.TM. that forms accurately shaped high strength green objects. The new binders may be thermally removed in post-shaping operations without significant residual ash. The resulting structures contain only metal, ceramic, or metal ceramic materials. The inventive methods developed for producing the new polymeric binder materials are based in part on using emulsion forms of selected polymers at controlled low molecular weights and high melt flow. An important aspect of the process is the semi-batch addition of selected chain transfer agents to the reacting emulsion. This optimizes coating characteristics of the polymer binder and results in high part strengths of the prototype parts produced in the SLS.TM. process.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1997Date of Patent: April 11, 2000Assignee: The University of Texas System Board of RegentsInventors: Joel W. Patent number: 6046158Abstract: Novel genes expressed selectively by long-term dendritic cell (DC) lines (XS series) from murine epidermis which retain important features of resident epidermal Langerhans cells (LC) are provided. These genes encode distinct type II membrane-integrated polypeptides, each consisting of a cytoplasmic domain, a transmembrane domain, an extracellular connecting domain, and a C-terminal extracellular domain that exhibits significant homology to the carbohydrate recognition domains (CRD) of C-type lectins. Expression of both genes is highly restricted to cells of DC lineage (including epidermal LC). Thus, these genes encode new, DC-specific members of the C-type lectin family, now termed "DC-associated C-type lectin-1 and -2" (dectin-1 and dectin-2). Two isoforms of the dectin-1 molecule and five isoforms of the dectin-2 molecule have also been identified. The invention further provides His-tagged fusion proteins comprising 6.times. histidine and the extracellular domain of dectin-1 or dectin-2.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1996Date of Patent: April 4, 2000Assignee: Board of Regents The University of Texas SystemsInventors: Kiyoshi Ariizumi, Akira Takashima

Patent number: 6043063Abstract: Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) polyester is extracted from biomass by dissolving the PHA in a non-halogenated solvent which comprises a PHA-good solvent or a mixture thereof. Suitable PHA-good solvents can be selected from the disclosed alcohols, esters, amides and ketones. The PHA can be recovered, for example, by cooling, by solvent evaporation, or by addition of a PHA-poor solvent, wherein the PHA-poor solvent preferably dissolves less than about 1% (w/v) of the PHA at a temperature below the solvent boiling point. Preferred PHA types for use in the invention are poly (hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate), and polymers/copolymers of hydroxyterminated polyhydroxybutyrate.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1998Date of Patent: March 28, 2000Assignee: Monsanto CompanyInventors: Devdatt L.
