Abstract: 7,8-Diacyl bicyclo 2.2.2!oct-5-ene-bis(2,3-dicarboximide) and 7,8-diacyl bicyclo 2.2.2!octane-bis(2,3-dicarboximide) compounds useful for the production of polyimides.
Abstract: A process of treating textiles and textile fibers with a partial ester having at least one retained acid group to impart a durable hydrophilic antistatic antisoiling finish which comprises the steps of (1) providing a water-soluble reaction product of a polyethylene glycol of an average molecular weight of 100 to 6000 and a polycarboxylic acid compound capable of forming a four to six membered cyclic acid anhydride ring, (2) coating, and (3) curing said reaction product on said textiles and textile fibers.
Abstract: Disclosed is a continuous process for purifying contaminated waste water. First the water passes through an equalization zone including at least two separate compartments, in one of which the pH of the water is adjusted to a range of from about 6.5 to 9.5. The water flows through the separate compartments such that the concentration of contaminants in the water exiting the equalization zone will approach about constant concentration which changes only gradually even though influent contaminant concentration changes rapidly. Water in at least one compartment of the equalization zone is aerated so that the dissolved oxygen in the water is at least three parts of dissolved oxygen per million parts of water. Solids are skimmed from the surface of the water in the zone, and coagulant is added to the effluent water from the equalization zone so that colloidal particles in the water flocculate. The water from this equalization zone is then filtered to remove flocculated particles.

Abstract: Novel catalysts and processes are disclosed for producing highly crystalline polypropylene and highly crystalline copolymers of propylene with ethylene or propylene with other alpha-olefins. Such catalysts can reduce the amount of low-molecular-weight and, particularly, amorphous polymers formed without serious effect on the polymerization yield. These novel catalysts and processes involve improving an alkylaluminum compound-titanium chloride catalyst by using in combination small amounts of hydrogen sulfide and a sterically hindered, lower alkyl substituted, cyclic, tertiary amine, a sterically hindered, lower alkyl substituted, cyclic, amine oxide, or a trihydrocarbylphosphite. Such catalyst systems are useful in slurry polymerization, bulk polymerization and techniques in which polymerization is accomplished utilizing monomer substantially in the vapor phase.
Abstract: Phenols alkylated with high molecular weight ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymers are obtained in essentially quantitative yields and with no measurable fragmentation of terpolymer by reacting terpolymer with a large excess of phenol, in the presence of BF.sub.3 as catalyst, at alkylation temperatures of about 170.degree.-300.degree. F. The preferred terpolymers consist essentially of about 35-45 mole percent propylene, 65-55 mole percent ethylene, and about 1.0-2.5 mole percent of a 5-alkenyl-2-norbornene such as 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene. The novel terpolymer alkylated phenol compositions are useful as intermediates for the preparation of multifunctional addition agents for lubricating oils, for example addition agents having combined dispersant-viscosity index improving properties.

Abstract: Polyalkylenetrimellitate imide polyalkylenetrimellitate ester imides suitable for use as self-bonding varnish coatings for magnet wire, which can be produced by condensation of a trimellitic acid compound, a diprimary amine, an alkanol amine and a glycol.
Abstract: Silver/transition metal catalysts are made by calcining the polysilver salt of a polycarboxylic acid and at least one transition metal salt of an organic polycarboxylic acid at temperatures from 200-500.degree. C., and oxidizing the said calcined salts with oxygen at temperatures from 20-500.degree. C.
Abstract: A method for catalytically cracking an isolated reactant feed, 80-100 volume percent of which is a substantially mono-aromatic hydrocarbon fraction boiling in the boiling range of heavy gasoline and the remainder of which is a vaporizable hydrocarbon fraction, under effective cracking conditions of cracking temperature, catalyst composition, catalyst activity, catalyst-to-feed weight ratio, and weight hourly space velocity, to produce an isolated product having increased low molecular weight olefin and low molecular weight mono-aromatic contents and a reduced sulfur content and having a high octane rating.

Abstract: A water soluble wire enamel having a Class F thermal rating is the reaction product of several ingredients comprising a water soluble polyester resin based on terephthalic acid and trimellitic anhydride, an ethanol-substituted amine, water, and a suitable crosslinking agent.
Abstract: Novel dianhydrides derived from trimellitic anhydride and adamantane diacetates are polymerized with a diamine to produce the corresponding polyamide, which is subsequently converted to the polyesterimide by heat treatment at temperatures above 500.degree. F.
Abstract: A composite formed at relatively low temperature from branched polyphenylene and mica exhibits excellent mechanical properties after heat aging.
Abstract: Paper sizing process comprising (1) adding a sizing composition of a cationic retention aid and a monoester of a benzene carboxylic acid anhydride having from 6 to 60 carbon atoms in the ester group to an aqueous pulp suspension or paper stock prior to web formation, and (2) heating said sized paper web to a temperature of from 80.degree. to 150.degree. C.
Abstract: High surface area silver olefin oxide catalysts with orderly distribution of pore size are prepared by pyrolysis of silver salts of di- and polycarboxylic acids or mixtures thereof to carbon-like polymers containing silver, followed by combustion of the carbonaceous material. The resulting unsupported or supported silver catalysts are useful for oxidations, cyclizations, isomerizations, and cracking. The carbon-like polymers containing silver, before combustion of the carbonaceous material, find utility as bactericides and catalysts. Extraction of the silver yields high surface area carbon adsorbents of predetermined structure.

Abstract: A catalytic composition is produced by reacting in an aqueous medium, vanadium and phosphorus compounds together with a hydrogen halide and removing liquid from the resulting reactants to form a solid which in an improved manner is heated at a temperature of about less than 470.degree. C. to effect liberation of water of hydration from the solid and thereafter contacting with a reducing material selected from the group of carbon monoxide, hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide at a temperature of from about 300.degree. to about 600.degree. C. and in the substantial absence of gaseous oxygen other than that liberated from the solid. The specific reduction step as taught and claimed herein improves catalyst activity performance by increasing the catalyst conversion and selectivity to a desired oxygenated product, and the ultimate yield of the oxygenated product per quantity of feed component converted. It also minimizes formation of inactive VPO.sub.
Abstract: Aqueous coating composition comprising a dispersion of a resinous addition polymer of an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid compound and suspended particles of a resinous polymer of propylene. Coating methods and coated articles are also disclosed.
Abstract: Non-dripping, preferably fire retardant polypropylene compositions comprising modified polypropylene component and a cross-linker. Conventional fire retardants can also be present.
Abstract: Solid aromatic polymers, such as branched polyphenylenes, are reacted with a reactive gas such as a NO.sub.2 -N.sub.2 O.sub.4 mixture, chlorine and sulfur trioxide without solvent or catalyst. The extent of reaction depends on reaction time and temperature and on the concentration of the reactive gas.
