Abstract: Viruses are modified by coupling a polymer such as polyethylene glycol to obtain polymer-modified viruses that can exhibit reduced antigenicity while retaining infectivity, and which may exhibit increased circulation time in vivo. The polymer may be directly covalently attached or indirectly covalently attached via an intermediate coupling moiety to the virus. The polymer may also be indirectly noncovalently attached to the virus via a ligand such as an antibody having specificity for a viral surface component. To prepare the polymer-modified virus, the polymer is activated and coupled to the virus. A preferred activated polymer is tresyl-monomethoxypolyethylene glycol having an average molecular weight of about 5000 daltons. The polymer-modified viruses have utility for therapeutic and diagnostic in vivo applications, and may be used to introduce a transgene into a target cell by infection, or be administered to a subject having a tumor where the polymer-modified virus localizes to the tumor.
Abstract: The object of the present invention is to promote warming-up operation in a cooling water flow control system of an internal combustion engine. A flow control valve is provided at a junction of a radiator passage and a bypass passage. Radiator flow rate and bypass flow rate of the flow control vale are controlled by detecting engine outlet water temperature, radiator outlet water temperature, number of revolutions of engine, and suction pipe negative pressure. The cooling water in the bypass passage passes through a throttle body, and flow rate is controlled to a totally closed flow rate or a micro-flow rate in the warming-up operation, and this contributes to the promotion of the warming-up operation.

Abstract: An ocular optical characteristic measuring apparatus measures light intensity distribution in a target image projected on the fundus of an eye and determines the ocular optical characteristic of the eye on the basis of the light intensity distribution. A light-projecting optical system projects light emitted by a light source on the eye to form a target image on the fundus of the eye, a light-receiving optical system focuses reflected light reflected by the fundus to form a target image on a photoelectric device. An arithmetic unit determines a light intensity distribution in the target image formed on the photoelectric device on the basis of an image signal provided by the photoelectric device and estimates the optical characteristic of the eye from the light intensity distribution in the target image.
Abstract: A process for preparing a disinfectant for use in swimming pools and the like. The process provides a formulation containing copper sulfate pentahydrate that will remain suspended so long as the formulation is maintained at a temperature above 40° F. The process includes the step of mixing the copper sulfate pentahydrate with water, sulfuric acid and ammonium sulfate at a temperature of 187° F.±10° F., then rapidly cooling the mixture to a temperature of 57-65° F. Colloidal silver or gold added to the formulation before the step of rapidly cooling will also remain suspended. Hydrogen peroxide may be added to enhance the performance of the disinfectant.
Abstract: Tamper-resistant software is provided by determining an initial value of a specified property for an executable file. The executable file is then encrypted based on the initial value of the specified property. The initial value of the specified property is associated with the encrypted executable file and later used to decrypt the encrypted executable file. An execution-time value of the specified property is determined for the decrypted executable file. The execution-time value of the specified property is compared to the initial value of the specified property to determine whether tampering has occurred. The decrypted executable file is executed in response to the execution-time value of the specified property matching the initial value of the specified property.

Abstract: A microwave-induced thermoacoustic tomography system and method is provided to image biological tissue. Short microwave pulses irradiate tissue to generate acoustic waves by thermoelastic expansion. The microwave-induced thermoacoustic waves are detected with an ultrasonic transducer or transducer array. Each time-domain signal from the ultrasonic transducer is converted to a one-dimensional image along the acoustic axis of the ultrasonic transducer. Scanning the system perpendicularly to the acoustic axis of the ultrasonic transducer generates multi-dimensional images in real time without computational image reconstruction.
