Abstract: Provided is a non-aqueous, emulsifiable composition which, in its overall concept, comprises a substantially homogenous mixture of an unblocked polyisocyanate crosslinking agent and a surface active isocyanate reactive material. Also provided is a substantially homogeneous, curable, oil-in-water emulsion produced by, as well as a method of producing such by, the steps of admixing the components of the non-aqueous emulsifiable composition as described above and, thereafter, contacting such emulsifiable composition and an aqueous medium in proportions and under conditions so as to result in a substantially homogeneous, oil-in-water emulsion. Such curable emulsions find particular use in a variety of coatings applications.
Abstract: Novel aminoplast anchored UV stabilizers are provided. Compared to unanchored stabilizers, the anchored stabilizers disclosed herein have increased compatibility with coating resins and have reduced volatility due to higher molecular weights resulting from anchoring. A process for preparing the anchored stabilizers by the reaction of unanchored stabilizers with alkoxymethylated aminoplasts in a sulfuric acid medium is also provided. The unanchored stabilizers include 2-(2-hydroxyaryl)benzotriazoles, 2-hydroxybenzophenones, 2-(2-hydroxyaryl)-4,6-diaryl-1,3,5-triazines, salicylic acid derivatives, 2-hydroxyoxanilides, and blocked derivatives thereof as well as mixtures of two or more stabilizers. The aminoplasts include alkoxymethylated derivatives of glycolurils, melamines, and benzoguanamines.
Abstract: Novel polyfunctional maleimides as well as novel compositions based on mono- and polyfunctional maleimides are provided. Also provided are heat resistance resin compositions and curable compositions incorporating the same. The monofunctional maleimide is N-(2,3-dimethylphenyl)maleimide, and the polyfunctional maleimides are bis- and higher functional variations thereof.
Abstract: Provided are methyl methacrylate polymers admixed with particular polyalkylene glycols, ethers or esters, optionally with BHT, which show good chemical resistance, as well as maintenance of optical properties and minimal yellowing on exposure to sterilizing gamma radiation.
Abstract: Waterborne coating compositions, methods of preparing the same and uses thereof are disclosed. The present waterborne coating compositions include an active hydrogen-containing surface active resin and a 1,3,5-triazine carbamate crosslinker dispersed in an aqueous medium, and are preferably formulated to be applied by spraying for use in automotive OEM applications.
Abstract: An acid cured coating composition containing a hydroxyfunctional acrylic or polyester resin and a 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-tris-carbamate. Also provided is an acid cured coating composition containing a hydroxyfunctional acrylic or polyester resin, a crosslinking agent such as a melamine-formaldehyde or a related aminoresin, and a co-crosslinking agent derived from a triazine tris-carbamate such as 2,4,6-tris-(butoxycarbonylamino)-1,3,5-triazine. Also provided is an improved method of coating using the above coating compositions. The coating compositions described in this invention have lower cure temperatures, lower formaldehyde emissions during cure, and produce films and objects which have superior environmental etch resistance than the conventional melamine-formaldehyde coatings which do not have a triazine tris-carbamate co-crosslinker.

Abstract: This invention provides a process for preparing amide derivatives of acids by the reaction of haloaminotriazines and acid halides.This invention also provides a process for preparing isocyanates and isocyanate adducts from amide derivatives derived from haloaminotriazines and acid halides such as oxalyl chloride, phosgene and phosgene analogs.Melamine derived acid amides are prepared by reaction of trichloro and hexachloromelamines with chloroformates and acid chlorides. The by-product chlorine may be recycled in this process.Amides, carbamates, sulfonamides, phosphoramides, and related amide derivatives may be prepared by the novel processes of the invention.

Processes for removing suspended solids from Bayer alumina process streams using these compositions are also provided.
Abstract: A concentrated aqueous dialkylsulfosuccinate wetting agent formulation containing at least 10% w/w of a dialkylsulfosuccinate, at least one nonionic surfactant cosolvent in an amount effective to assist in the solvation of the dialkylsulfosuccinate and water. The formulation has a low volatile organic compound content and generally has a high flash point.
Abstract: A process for preparing a tris-lactam crosslinking agent, tris-pyrrolidonyl triazine, from N,N',N"-tris(4-chlorobutyryl)melamine by treatment of the chlorobutyryl derivative with a base such as sodium or potassium carbonate to effect intramolecular cyclization to the tris-lactam. A curable composition comprises tris-pyrrolidonyl triazine as the crosslinking agent and a hydroxyfunctional or aminofunctinoal material as a resin. Thick films with no pinholes are prepared from the curable compositions using powder coating techniques.

Abstract: A copolymer of a TMI/amino compound 1:1 monoadduct with ethylenically unsaturated comonomers is provided, as well as a process for producing the same. Such copolymers in and of themselves may find use as aminoplast crosslinking agents, or can readily be modified thereto. Curable compositions can be formulated from the crosslinker alone or in combination with polyfunctional active hydrogen compounds, which can be cured to produce crosslinked films and objects.
Abstract: A process for making a dianhydride product, said process comprising reacting two moles of maleic anhydride and one mole of a vinyl benzene compound in a reaction mixture comprising about 1.5 to 2.0 moles of the vinyl benzene compound per mole of maleic anhydride at reaction temperature in the range from 105.degree. to 125.degree. C. for time to complete the reaction, adding a polar organic liquid to the reaction product mixture and refluxing the mixture, cooling the mixture following reflux and adding a hydrocarbon liquid to precipitate the product, separating the solid dianhydride product by filtration, washing the solids on the filter and drying the solids to make the finished dianhydride product.
