  • Patent number: 5582571
Abstract: The present invention provides an apparatus and method for perforating and creasing a paperboard sheet utilizing a rotary die process. The method and apparatus employ a die rule that comprises a base adapted to be attached to a die roll of a rotary die machine, a plurality of tooth elements, and open spaces between at least some of the plurality of tooth elements. Each of the plurality of tooth elements comprises a body portion that is fixed to and extends radially outwardly from the die roll and a laterally-tapered tooth portion. Each open space is defined by lateral portions of adjacent teeth element body portions and by the base outer edge. The body portion preferably extends radially outwardly from the base so that substantially all of the tooth portion penetrates the outer surface of the paperboard, and the base outer edge extends outwardly so that it engages and creases the inner surface of the paperboard.

  • Patent number: 5581378
Abstract: A display device which is capable of producing a plurality of different views of an image simultaneously is provided. The display includes an array of semiconductor devices with an electro-optical material disposed over the array of semiconductor devices. The semiconductor devices include electrodes which are selectively activated to form refraction gratings in the electro-optical material. Each of the semiconductor devices also includes a processor layer which can determine a refraction grating which is necessary for generating a predetermined number of discrete images which are visible from a predetermined number of different vantage points or viewer positions. Since a different image is provided to each eye, the viewer is provided with a perception of depth such that a three-dimensional image is provided. In addition, since different images or at least different image perspectives are provided to different points, horizontal and/or vertical parallax of the display is attained.

  • Patent number: 5579566
Abstract: An apparatus for stuffer box crimping synthetic filament yarns is disclosed, which includes an air nozzle for pulling in and advancing multi-filament yarns at a high speed, and a downstream stuffer box in which the gaseous transport fluid is separated and the yarn is compressed to a compact yarn plug. To increase the production speed and production reliability, the speed at which the yarn is advanced through the air nozzle, and the yarn tension which is produced by the air nozzle is increased. This occurs in accordance with the invention in that the duct for the common advance of the yarn and the transport fluid is configured such that the flow duct narrows in the shape of a nozzle in a first segment down to a restriction at which the outflowing transport fluid reaches the speed of sound, and the duct then widens in a second segment at a small angle of opening.

  • Patent number: 5577676
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling the traversing frequency during the winding of a cross-wound package. In so doing, a signal is detected which is generated by the motion of the yarn while being wound onto a yarn package. Thereafter, the signal is analyzed by frequency, and/or amplitude, or other characteristics. Finally, the traversing frequency of the yarn takeup system is adjusted or varied as a function of the analysis result. In the preferred embodiment, the signal is proportional to a development of airborne sound or a development of solid-borne sound, each of which is generated in response to the motion of the advancing yarn on the package being formed. The method of the present invention allows disturbances in the winding operation to be avoided, such as the formation of so-called ribbons and similar phenomena.

  • Patent number: 5577401
Abstract: A durable cylinder assembly for a circular knitting machine is described. The cylinder assembly includes a cylinder body having an outer cylindrical face and an upper face including a plurality of spaced-apart substantially radial channels. A shaped circumferential indentation circumscribes an upper end of the outer cylindrical face, and a hardened circular band is matingly engaged with the indentation to define a durable bearing surface for reciprocating elements the knitting machine, e.g. the sinkers and/or needles. The hardened band is preferably formed of heat treated metal and has a discontinuous circumference defined by a single cut, which is preferably single or double biased. The indentation provided in the cylinder body is desirably in the form a right angle, and the band preferably has a rectangular cross-sectional configuration so as to mate securely with the indentation.

  • Patent number: 5578170
Abstract: A tissue web (W), which has improved formation and improved tensile properties but no appreciable deterioration of retention and layer purity, if applicable, in comparison with tissue webs produced in conventional twin wire tissue formers, may be formed in a roll type twin wire former by draining 90-99%, preferably 98-99%, of all drainable water from the slurry while on the forming roll (1), preferably a suction forming roll, the remaining 1-10%, preferably 1-2%, of the drainable water being sufficient to have a substantial amount of the papermaking fibers free in the slurry during an initial phase of a subsequent step, and, downstream of said forming roll (1), draining said remaining 1-10%, preferably 1-2%, from the slurry while vibrating the slurry sufficiently to create a micro-turbulence causing a small scale agitation of the fibers to prevent them from forming any appreciable fibrous web (W) on the two forming fabrics (3; 4) until the water remaining in the slurry is insufficient for allowing the fibers

  • Patent number: 5576967
Abstract: In a quality monitoring method it is proposed that in continuous operation a test signal be generated, digitized, logarithmized, followed by the calculation of a frequency distribution of the test signal amplitude. The frequency distribution can then be integrated in individual areas, the result for each area forming a feature of the test signal. The features of a test signal are combined into vectors, which can be used for a better evaluation of the quality of the production plant.

  • Patent number: 5575879
Abstract: An insulator element (10), especially destined for noise insulation in vehicles, comprises an adhesive layer which is covered by a removable protective element (12). To facilitate removal of the protective element by peeling, the outer contour of the protective element (12) projects beyond the outer contour (11) of the insulator element (10). In forming a peeling tongue (13), first a protective element layer is removed from an adhesive layer of the starting material and swung into an upright position or bent back. During the subsequent cutting or punching process to produce the insulator element (10), the area of the protective element layer which was folded back is affected in part only, thus providing the peeling tongue (13). Thereafter the hinged peeling tongue (13) is bent so as to project beyond the outer contour (11) of the insulator element (10) thus offering a big enough gripping area to peel off the protective element (12).

  • Patent number: 5573168
Abstract: A dispensing apparatus for serially dispensing plastic bags from a wound roll of continuous flexible plastic bags joined along perforated severance lines. A box like container is provided which is adapted to receive the wound roll of plastic bags. The container has a bottom panel, a top panel, a rear panel, a front panel, and a pair of opposed side panels. The front panel defines a guide slot for guiding the plastic bags from the wound roll along a predetermined path and further defining a threading slide for threading the plastic bags from the wound roll into the guide slot. A separation tongue is located on the front panel for separating the plastic bags from the wound roll as the plastic bags engage the separation tongue along a predetermined path of travel.

  • Patent number: 5574366
Abstract: A proximity switch for determining the approach of a metal object includes an oscillating circuit which has a coil and a capacitor, and which produces a high-frequency field at the poles of the coil. A sensing resistor is connected to the oscillating circuit and serves to determine and evaluate the damping of the oscillating circuit by the object. Also, the sensing resistor is controlled as a function of the current measured in the sensing resistor such that the total resistance of the evaluation circuit remains constant. The voltage drop across the sensing resistor is measured and the measured voltage drop may be used to signal the approach of the metal object.
