  • Patent number: 5613349
Abstract: A process of manufacturing product packages having a multilayer backing member, a plastic product enclosure adhered to a front layer of the backing member, and a removable panel in a back layer for enclosing ancillary materials. The process includes the steps of printing a plurality of backing member patterns on a sheet of backing member material, applying a heat-resistant coating to back layer portions of the backing members, applying a heat-seal coating to front layer portions of the backing members, cutting the sheet to define individual backing members and the removable panel, and applying adhesive to and folding together the front and back layer portions with the ancillary materials therebetween so as to form individual backing members. A plastic product enclosure and the product may then be heat-sealed to the backing member.

  • Patent number: 5612099
Abstract: A method and apparatus for coating the surface of a substrate suspends a coating material above the surface of the substrate and irradiates both the coating material and the underlying surface of the substrate. By irradiating both the coating material and the underlying surface of the substrate, a first portion of the coating material is melted to form an at least partially molten droplet of coating material. In addition, at least a second portion of the coating material is ablated to thereby create an ablation plume which propels the at least partially molten droplet of coating material toward the substrate. In addition, the portion of the substrate toward which the at least partially molten droplet of coating material is propelled is simultaneously heated, such that the at least partially molten droplet coating material adheres to the heated substrate, thereby coating the surface of the substrate.

  • Patent number: 5612628
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring the barrier height distribution in an insulated gate field effect transistor by intermittently illuminating a partially transparent gate electrode under bias while applying varying back gate biases to the hack gate electrode and measuring the currents conducted by the gate electrode and by the connected source and drain electrodes. Based upon the inverse Laplace transform of the ratio of the measured currents, the barrier height distribution in the transistor, including the average barrier height and the variance of the distribution of barrier heights, typically a Gaussian distribution, may be determined. A method and apparatus for adjusting the gate bias to compensate for variations in the electric field in the insulator layer due to charge generation in the insulator layer is also provided. In addition, the method and apparatus also provides for measuring the photocurrent collected under the gate electrode.

  • Patent number: 5612123
Abstract: Improved meltspinning productivity is achieved by employing polyolefin resins having key molecular weight distribution and rheological property parameters within predetermined ranges. These parameters include the molecular weight distribution breadth parameter, M.sub.z /M.sub.n ; and rheological property parameters of flow rate ratio, I.sub.10 /I.sub.2, and the power law index, n, of the regression analysis viscosity equation. These parameters additionally include one or both of the z-average molecular weight, M.sub.z, of the resin, or the second order constant, b.sub.2, of the regression analysis viscosity equation, and unless both of the latter two parameters are met, the parameters further include the die swell and the spinnability factor (determined from the relationship between die swell and MFR) of the resin.

  • Patent number: 5609352
Abstract: A control valve for an antiroll suspension for a vehicle, the valve having a body, sliding valve element which is coupled to a pendulum arm through a linkage so that the valve element slides when the pendulum moves on cornering of the vehicle, the valve including a pressure inlet port between lands, a return port and outlet ports which are coupled to hydraulic rams in the vehicle suspension, whereby the valve element operates to control pressure at the outlet ports so as to actuate the rams to thereby reduce body roll on the vehicle. Restricted flow through ducts past pistons and end chambers to ducts and return port provides an increasing pressure differential to generate forces on the valve element which tend to oppose the displacement of the valve element whereby the valve element moves to an equilibrium position which is dependent on the forces transmitted to it from the pendulum arm. An antiroll suspension for a vehicle including the valve is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 5609838
Abstract: A process for producing sodium carbonate and other sodium-based chemicals from an aqueous solution containing sodium bicarbonate by contacting an aqueous solution of a bicarbonate-containing composition with a gas that is predominately other than carbon dioxide in an amount and for a time adequate to cause a sufficient amount of carbon dioxide to leave the aqueous solution to reduce the amount of bicarbonate ion in the solution by converting the bicarbonate to carbonate as carbon dioxide leaves the solution and thereafter converting the remaining solution to other sodium salts.

  • Patent number: 5607585
Abstract: An apparatus for filtering plastic melts, which comprises a filter housing (1) having at least one cylindrical filter receiving chamber (8), and with a tubular filter cartridge (2) mounted in the chamber. An annular melt flow space (9) for the plastic melt is defined between the outer periphery of the filter and the inside wall of the chamber, such that the melt flows radially inwardly through the filter medium of the filter cartridge and into the central passage of the filter cartridge and then to an outlet opening of the housing. An additional melt flow outlet channel (12) is positioned adjacent the downstream end of the filter cartridge, and in one embodiment, the melt is able to flow via the additional melt flow outflow channel to the outside of the housing. In a second embodiment, the melt can flow via the additional melt flow outflow channel and an additional filter (11) and return to the main flow.

  • Patent number: 5605060
Abstract: This invention discloses a shirt, bodysuit and teddy having built-in breast cups and/or selected areas of varying cross-stretch in order to provide compressive support for a wearer's body, and methods and blanks for manufacturing such shirts, bodysuits and teddies. In particular, circular knitting operations are used to produce garments having areas of compressive support in the middle torso region, and a greater amount of cross-stretch in the region corresponding to a wearer's breast area. In addition, the garments can include integrally-knit breast cups and a gathered panel located between the breast cups. Shirts made according to the present invention can include a turned welt about their lower or shirttail ends, in order to eliminate the need for hemming the lower shirt portion. Blanks and methods for making the garments are also disclosed, which require only a minimal number of manufacturing operations to be converted into completed garments.
