  • Patent number: 8092618
Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for controlling the formation of foulant deposits on petroleum processing equipment. The invention involves a first mixture comprising an acid phosphate ester. The first mixture is applied to the surface of the petroleum processing equipment at a high temperature. Then a second mixture comprising a metal salt is applied also at a high temperature. The result is sufficient to provide an effective coating that prevents the formation of foulant deposits on the petroleum processing equipment. The second mixture reacts with any polyphosphate in the coating to prevent any contamination of petroleum materials within the petroleum processing equipment.

  • Patent number: 8088213
Abstract: A method of preparing a stable dispersion of flocculated filler particles for use in papermaking processes comprises sequential addition of a first flocculating agent to an aqueous dispersion of filler particles followed by shearing of the dispersion, followed by addition of a second flocculating agent to the dispersion and further shearing of the resultant filler flocs to the desired particle size resulting in shear resistant filler flocs with a defined and controllable size distribution. • Patent number: 8088250
Abstract: The invention provides a method of producing paper with a higher proportion of mineral filler particles than is otherwise be possible without the expected loss in paper strength. The method allows for the use of the greater amount of filler particles by coating at least some of the filler particles with a material that prevents the filler materials form adhering to a strength additive. The strength additive holds the cellulose fibers together tightly and is not wasted on the filler particles. The method is particularly effective when the filler particles are a PCC-GCC blend and when the GCC particles are coated with the adherence preventing coating.

  • Patent number: 7938934
Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for optimally feeding an ASA emulsion into a papermaking process. An intense transmission of ultrasonic energy rapidly and efficiently forms an ASA emulsion. Nearly simultaneous to forming the emulsion, the emulsion is fed into a high-speed dual conduit feeding apparatus, which quickly mixes the ASA emulsion with other chemicals and feeds the mixture directly into a papermaking process. The invention operates so fast that virtually no hydrolysis of the ASA occurs. This both prevents damage to the papermaking machinery and improves the quality of the produced paper. The invention operates 10-20 times faster than mechanical based emulsion methods and requires 1/7 as much energy to operate. The invention also self-monitors the process and can automatically correct any detected problems with the fed ASA emulsion.

  • Patent number: 7829738
Abstract: A method and apparatus for preparing a N,N-dialkylaminoalkyl acrylate in a continuous transesterification reaction. The reaction involves adding alkyl acrylates such as methacrylate or ethacrylate to a reboiler mechanism and efficiently removing alcohol co-products. Because the reaction is continuous, the alkyl acrylates can be added as needed to increase output, decrease output, or fine-tune the reaction dynamics. An entrainer is used to form a volatile azeotrope which contains both alcohol and entrainer and which is easily removed from the reboiler mechanism. This method reduces the amount of entrainer needed per unit of alkyl acrylate used and eliminates any need to purify the end product from entrainer contamination of the resulting N,N-dialkylaminoalkyl acrylate product.
