  • Patent number: 4926801
Abstract: The cylinder liner of an internal combustion engine includes a wet-type upper portion and a dry-type lower portion. The interior wall of the cylinder and the corresponding lower portion of the liner are machined to have an interference fit under operating conditions. The liner is firmly supported by this interference fit engagement of the liner with the cylinder bore over approximately two-thirds the length of the liner. The cylinder wall is machined to provide a shoulder substantially at the junction of the upper and lower portions of the liner and a corresponding shoulder is formed at this point on the liner. These shoulders are forced into firm sealing engagement by the torque applied to the cylinder head screws during asssembly of the cylinder head on the engine block. The vertical dimension of the shoulder on the cylinder liner is formed to be a minimum of 1/8 of the vertical dimension of upper portion of the liner.

  • Patent number: 4922365
Abstract: Disclosed is an overvoltage suppressing circuit for a semiconductor device connected between the poles of a DC power source and adapted to effect a switching operation. The circuit comprises: a serial circuit connected in parallel with a semiconductor device and including an overvoltage suppressing capacitor, an oscillation suppressing diode, and an impedance regulator connected in series each other, the impedance regulator being operable to change into a state of high impedance for suppressing a reverse current flowing into the oscillation suppressing diode when the oscillation suppressing diode is turned off; and a discharging device connected between a DC power source and the overvoltage suppressing capacitor for discharging to the DC power source a charge accumulated in the overvoltage suppressing capacitor when the oscillation suppressing diode is off.

  • Patent number: 4919740
Abstract: An improved apparatus and method for providing uniform fin-type back seals with flexible packaging material for use in conjunction with form-fill-and-seal machines is disclosed which utilizes a moveable tucker plate disposed between the mated edges of the flexible packaging material and the body of the packaging material. When sealing, the tucker plate moves against the body of the packaging material and prevents lateral movement of such material during the sealing operation. The tucker plate is joined to a sealing platen in a manner which maintains a fixed distance between the tucker plate and the sealing platen until a threshold sealing pressure is exceeded.

  • Patent number: 4919765
Abstract: Tetrahydrofuran is recovered by a two stage distillation procedure from a crude hydrogenation product resulting from vapor phase hydrogenation of diethyl maleate and containing water, ethanol and a minor amount of n-butanol, and possibly also dissolved hydrogen, in addition to butane-1,4-diol, gamma-butyrolactone and "heavies" such as diethyl ethoxysuccinate. In the first distillation stage, conveniently operated substantially at atmospheric pressure, ethanol, water, and tetrahydrofuran are recovered as overhead product, are condensed to separate the condensible components from a hydrogen stream which can be vented, and then redistilled in the presence of a molar excess of a hydroxylic solvent containing at least two hydroxyl groups, such as butane-1,4-diol, in a second distillation zone.

  • Patent number: 4917024
Abstract: A coal fired power plant includes a coal gasification zone where coal is gasified in the presence of an oxidant-lean atmosphere under partial coal gasifying conditions to produce a carbonaceous char and a crude gas stream, an acid separating zone where sulfur-containing compounds are separated from the crude gas stream to produce a combustible gas stream, and a converting zone where the sulfur-containing compounds are converted to elemental sulfur. The combustible gas stream and the carbonaceous char are fed into a boiler which drives a generator to produce electricity; portions of the carbonaceous char product and the combustible gas stream are diverted into a gypsum desulfurization zone. SO.sub.2 -containing flue gas from the boiler is fed into a flue gas desulfurization zone. There, the SO.sub.2 -containing flue gas is contacted with lime and limestone to produce gypsum.
