  • Patent number: 4307990
Abstract: Packages such as sacks and bags are emptied by an apparatus which has a substantially funnel-shaped frame with an openable and closable discharge. A device on the inside of the frame slits the package wall and thereby opens the package in the vicinity of the discharge. To reduce and, if possible, eliminate environmental problems, a sleeve is disposed on the inside of the frame for abutment sealing against the wall of a package placed in the frame.

  • Patent number: 4305528
Abstract: A dispensing device is provided with a tube that engages a nozzle orifice of the device. During storage, a cap covers the orifice and defines an opening that is adjacent to the body of said device, such that the tube is able to extend beyond the periphery of the cap. The disposition of the cap relative to the tube and dispenser body causes the tube to lie in proximity to an external wall of the body. When the cap is removed or, in an alternative embodiment, rotated, the tube can assume a radially outward configuration.

  • Patent number: 4304617
Abstract: A low pressure, pneumatic tire is provided with a flexible tread belt that extends outwardly beyond the sidewalls respectively adjacent thereto when the sidewalls are flexed under normal load. The configuration and stiffness of the belt is such that the load carried by the tire is effectively spread beyond the width of the flexed torus. At the same time, local deformation of the belt can take place in such a way to fold up over the flexed sidewalls to prevent them from damage by shock or abrasion caused by objects striking the sidewalls.

  • Patent number: 4304738
Abstract: Packing material is formed of stacked panels of expanded metal, each of which has intersecting sets of parallel linear metal strips. Each panel has a horizontal set of linear strips oriented parallel to a corresponding set of linear strips on an adjacent panel and perpendicular to a vertical fluid flow direction which is parallel to the panels; and, each panel has a second set of linear strips inclined about 45.degree. from the vertical in a direction opposite to the inclination of the corresponding inclined set of strips on the adjacent panel. The strips of adjacent panels are canted in opposite directions relative to the planes of their respective panels. Alternative orientations and directions are also disclosed. The packing material is used in packed towers and conduit-connected motionless mixers, and with crossflow trays and dualflow trays.

  • Patent number: 4301882
Abstract: A power-assisted steering system for a motor vehicle comprises a flexible tie, the ends of which are wrapped in opposite directions around, and are anchored to drums which turn with the steering movements of the steerable guiding wheels. The tie carries at its center, rollers which follow fixed cams. The profiles of the cams are such that, during the steering of the wheels under the action of two hydraulic rams acting through racks and pinions fixed to the drums, the wheels always turn about a single common instantaneous center of turning. The rams are controlled by a distributor valve which is in turn controlled by a rocking lever which is actuated by Bowden wire cables from a steering wheel. The system is especially applicable to load handling trucks having small turning circles.

  • Patent number: 4301853
Abstract: A stretcher frame for an artist's canvas is formed of four wooden side pieces with simple mitred ends, joined at the corners by four corner connector assemblies. Each corner connector assembly has a pair of perpendicularly interconnected arms of U-shaped cross section which slidably receive two of the wooden side pieces. A support bracket projects inwardly from each arm, and a connecting bracket projects inwardly from each side piece. A threaded rod is affixed to the connecting bracket and extends through the support bracket, and a spring on the rod biases the support bracket outwardly to apply tension to a canvas on the frame. To deter inward flexing of the side pieces, cross members extend between opposed pairs of side pieces. Each cross member includes a threaded rod, a spring on the threaded rod, a tube which is biased by the spring and receives the threaded rod, and a nut which is threaded on the rod to compress the spring.

  • Patent number: 4299200
Abstract: An absorber panel for solar energy is formed of two sheets with spacer means extending therebetween to maintain a spaced relationship between the sheets and provide a flow passage for a heat exchange liquid such as water. A pressure differential biases the sheets toward each other so that their spacing is maintained by the spacer means. The upper sheet which is exposed to solar. energy may be thin, and the sheets are free to move away from each other at the location of the spacer means so that permanent damage will not result when the heat exchange liquid expands by freezing or when there is excessive flow of liquid through the flow passage in the absorber panel.
