  • Patent number: 4299520
Abstract: A drive nut has a hollow interior in which a plurality of cantilever clamping members which are arranged with equal spacing around a common circle and extend substantially parallel to the nut centerline, and which are rigidly and integrally fixed at their lower ends to the nut inner side near the bottom seating surface thereof. The clamping members thus form a substantially cylindrical passage through which a mating member with a male screw thread is forcibly driven axially from the side of the seating surface relative to the nut to be quickly but positively locked by the drive nut.

  • Patent number: 4300093
Abstract: A device for measuring the amount of rotation of a rotating object is provided with a sensor unit made up of the rotating object and stationary members arranged to form two pairs of capacitors therebetween. The confronting surfaces of the rotating object and stationary members are graduated with gear-like cuts so that while the capacitances of two of two pairs of capacitors are maximum, the capacitances of the other capacitors are minimum. The device further comprises a pair of oscillators coupled to the two pairs of capacitors, and a mixer connected to the oscillators so that the difference in capacitance between the capacitors is obtained as the difference in frequency, which is processed to provide the amount of movement of the moving object.

  • Patent number: 4298160
Abstract: A solid bowl decanter centrifuge of the scroll discharge type comprises a solid bowl which rotates at a first speed, and a scroll conveyor which is rotated within the bowl at a second, slightly different speed for conveying separated solids to a solids discharge end of the bowl. The suspension to be centrifuges, substantially unmixed with a flocculant, is introduced by a stationary feed pipe into a feed compartment which is a radial passage in the conveyor. The feed compartment provides high turbulence and shear forces which mix and expel the suspension and flocculant into the bowl before flocs have formed.

  • Patent number: 4294897
Abstract: In an electrochemical cell such as a sodium sulphur cell using a ceramic electrolyte tube (e.g. of beta-alumina), the electrolyte tube is secured to a rigid annular element of, for example, alpha-alumina, having substantially the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the electrolyte tube, this annular element being radially thicker than the electrolyte tube and having two oppositely sloping tapered surfaces on its outer face. Metal elements are then forced onto the tapered surfaces with an interstrate layer of soft metal, e.g. aluminium, which deforms into a groove or grooves in the tapered surfaces to form a hermetic seal.

  • Patent number: 4294005
Abstract: For a cylindrical sodium sulphur cell, a cathode electrode structure is provided with improved electronic conductivity in the radial direction, compared with other directions, by forming a block of fibre material, e.g. graphite fibres, with the fibres aligned in one direction, slicing the block to form a sheet with fibres normal to the plane of the sheet, moulding the sheet and impregnating it with cathodic reactant in a heated mould having a plurality of ribs, to form a plurality of trapezoidal segments with the fibres normal to the planes of the parallel surfaces of the trapezoids, cooling the mould so that the impregnant is solidified and then forming the trapezoids into an annular structure. Preferably the mould is such that thin webs are left joining adjacent trapezoidal sections along parallel edges of the wider of the two parallel faces so that the webs form hinges for folding the segments into the annular assembly.

  • Patent number: 4291594
Abstract: In the regulation of a motor-drive unit for a motor vehicle having a heat-engine and a continuously variable ratio transmission, in a clutch-engaged phase the heat-engine fuel feed is controlled so that it is a function of the displacement of the accelerator pedal of the vehicle and of the speed of the heat-engine such that the power delivered by the engine is substantially equal to the power required for that displacement of the accelerator pedal. In addition, the transmission ratio is controlled so that the speed of the heat-engine approaches an ideal speed which depends upon the power required and is predetermined for operation of the motor-drive unit which is optimalized in accordance with a chosen criterion. Operation is thus obtained with, for example, minimum consumption or pollution while taking into account, in the transient phase, the operation desired by the driver.

  • Patent number: 4291228
Abstract: A circular array of detectors is used for detecting coincident events and the point of annihilation in a positron annihilation process in a selected plane wherein the output from the detectors is processed in a computer to provide image reconstruction for the selected plane. Bismuth germanate is shown to be more efficient than previously used detectors and the adaption of trapezoidal shape for the detectors enables more efficient utilization of the photons produced in the process. The use of absorbing metal reducing plugs between adjacent detectors may be used to decrease the aperture function of the detectors for low angles of incident radiation.
