  • Patent number: 4571274
Abstract: In the operation of a continuous-process annealing furnace for a steel strip of a continuous length which is guided through the high-temperature zones of the furnace by the upper and lower hearth rolls in an alternate up and down vertical movement, each of the hearth rolls having an end-tapered or crowned configuration to correct the meandering of the running strip, each of the hearth rolls is coupled with one or a plural number of straightly cylindrical auxiliary rolls in contact with the strip at a position close to the hearth roll. By virtue of the installation of the auxiliary rolls, the phenomenon of wrinkling or buckling in the steel strip can be effectively prevented without causing meandering and the effect is more remarkable when specific relationships are held among the values of the diameters of the hearth roll and auxiliary roll and the position of the auxiliary roll relative to the hearth roll.

  • Patent number: 4568415
Abstract: In the method for manufacturing strings, a plurality of narrow strip layers (22) of synthetic material are successively and coaxially helically wound on the cylindrical surface of a continuous core. The winding (3) thus produced is conveyed hot to a welding area (7) wherein the narrow strips (22) of synthetic material are mutually assembled by welding. The temperature of the welding area is adjusted high enough so that a welding between the narrow strips (22) takes place without substantially decreasing the breaking strength of the narrow strips (22) by such heat treatment. The appropriate materials for the narrow strips are olefines such as homopolymer polypropylene or terpolymer polypropylene-polyethylene-dienes. To reduce the tendency to flow, the material forming the narrow strips may contain a nucleation agent. The characteristics of the strings thus manufactured are similar to those of gut strings.

  • Patent number: RE32077
Abstract: Describes electrolytic cell with dimensionally stable anodes, non-porous ion-selective membranes separating said anodes from the cathode compartment, and a porous, static bed of loose, conducting cathodic material in the cathode compartment, extending between the conductive walls of the cathode compartment and the membrane and contacting the conductive walls of the cathode and said membranes to carry current between the walls of the cathode compartment and said membranes. This construction reduces the electrodic gap to substantially the thickness of the membranes and presses the membranes against the anodes. It produces greater uniformity of current density over the entire electrodic area, substantially free from localized differences of current density which tend to cause deterioration of membranes by the creation of localized mechanical and electrical stresses in other types of cells, and provides a method for carrying current from the effective cathodic surface to the walls of the cathode compartment.
