Patent number: 6473644Abstract: A method is disclosed for treating patients suffering from heart failure to increase cardiac output. The patient's vagus nerve is electrically stimulated or modulated with a sequence of substantially equally spaced pulses by an implanted neurostimulator, and the frequency of the stimulating pulses is adjusted until the patient's heart rate reaches a target rate within a relatively stable target rate range below the low end of the patient's customary resting heart rate. The frequency of the stimulating pulses is maintained at the frequency which ultimately produced the relatively stable target rate range so as not to deviate markedly from the target rate, at least so long as the patient remains at rest. An activity sensor associated with the implanted neurostimulator detects physical activity of the patient and adjusts the frequency of the stimulating pulses accordingly, to elevate the heart rate during periods of physical activity by the patient.Type: GrantFiled: October 13, 1999Date of Patent: October 29, 2002Assignee: Cyberonics, Inc.Inventors: Reese S. Patent number: 6471489Abstract: A self-compensating, energy saving heat transfer unit to provide an efficient means to transfer energy from steam to water in a central heating system. The steam enters a mixing chamber and creates a negative pressure environment. Water in a backwater pipe, which is at a lower temperature and pressure, is absorbed into the mixing chamber where energy is passed from the steam to the water. The water then leaves the first mixing chamber and enters a second mixing chamber where compensation water is added to make up for the possible loss of water that may occur in the central heating system. The heated water then exits the heat transfer unit and goes back into the central heating system. After being cooled in the central heating system, the water then reenters the heat transfer unit at the backwater pipe and continues the cycle over again.Type: GrantFiled: December 6, 2000Date of Patent: October 29, 2002Assignee: Zhuhai Velocity of Sound Technology Ltd.Inventor: Li Shan Hua

Patent number: 6467422Abstract: A hydrofoil device is useable as a hydrofoil wing, propeller blade, etc. In a water flow, a relatively lower pressure is generated on a second surface (94) of the device compared with a first surface (96). Near the trailing end of the first surface a protrusion in the form of an adjustable interceptor (98) is provided. The face of this protrusion defines an included angle to the upstream direction of less than or equal to 90° so that water flow thereat is deflected back on itself thereby increasing the local pressure on the first surface. A second protrusion may be provided near the leading edge of the second surface (94) to encourage flow separation thereat. Air may be provided adjacent each protrusion to provide natural ventilation if the pressure of the water flow drops below atmospheric pressure.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 2000Date of Patent: October 22, 2002Assignee: Elms Austrialia Pty Ltd.Inventor: Antony Richard Elms

Patent number: 6460165Abstract: Transfer functions are calculated in the following manner within an RLC tree having a input and a plurality of nodes. The RLC tree is divided into left and right sub-trees joined by the node closest to the input. Each of the left and right sub-trees is divided into left and right sub-trees joined by a node. The sub-trees are divided recursively into still smaller sub-trees until the RLC tree is completely decomposed into left and right sub-trees joined by nodes. At each node of the RLC tree, the numerator and denominator of the transfer function at that node are determined in accordance with the left and right sub-trees joined by that node. The denominator of the transfer function of the node closest to the input is taken to be the denominator of all of the transfer functions of the RLC tree.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 2000Date of Patent: October 1, 2002Assignee: University of RochesterInventors: Yehea Ismail, Eby G. Patent number: 6454576Abstract: An AC line power coupling system secures a conventional plug (700) of an appliance cord or extension cord (702). A adapter (400) is fitted onto the prongs (704) of the cord, and semi-permanently attached with a connector (300) including two half housings (301 and 302) that fasten over the plug and a clamp (200) that holds the cord. The adapter prongs mate, which have a conventional layout, with a special socket (600). The adapter is locked onto the socket by a sleeve (500). The sleeve moves relative to the socket, rotating and axially sliding. When the sleeve is slid onto the protruding cylindrical end of the adapter and rotated, lugs on the inside of the sleeve engage in grooves, locking the adapter to the socket; the sleeve motion is reversed to unlock. The adapter can be plugged into conventional sockets while the connector remains fastened over the plug, but when plugged into the special socket and locked, the cord is prevented from pulling out under tension.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2000Date of Patent: September 24, 2002Assignee: BICC General Cable Industries, Inc.Inventors: Paul Hedrick, Rick Rimer, Ryan Flaugher
