  • Patent number: 6492808
Abstract: A magnetic non-destructive method and an apparatus for measurement of cross sectional area of elongated ferrous objects such as steel wire ropes and for detecting local flaws is disclosed. A section of a wire rope is magnetized by longitudinally spaced magnetic poles. A magnetic field parameter, e.g. magnetic flux density, is measured in, by at least, one pair of points between the poles of magnetizing device (in an inter-pole area) at the object under test surface. The pair of points is formed by two sensors placed in the inter-pole area along a direct line parallel to the rope axis. The rope cross sectional area corresponds to a sum of the sensor pair signals. Local flaws, such as broken wires and pitting corrosion in the rope, is detected by a first differences of signals of the sensor pair.

  • Patent number: 6493567
Abstract: A method and device for the continuous real-time monitoring of relative blood volume change, based on registration of blood hemoglobin concentration, during long periods of time, such as dialysis session. A method and device for cardiac output measurement, based on optical dilution technique, during dialysis, surgeries, intensive care procedure. The effects of blood electrolyte composition change which result in a change of light beam geometry are eliminated by the relative orientation between a light source and a single light or photodetector. An illumination axis and a detection axis are oriented in an offset, non collinear configuration at a sufficient angle to substantially eliminate the scattering properties of the blood. A primary implementation of the device is extracorporeal paths, such as hemodialysis tubing systems, artery-vein extracorporeal artificial shunts, other extracorporeal systems. It also may be applied to vessels, tissues or to body parts being capable of transillumination.

  • Patent number: 6493687
Abstract: A glass break detector is disclosed that uses a neural network to determine if an audio signal is breaking glass. A characteristic extraction unit is used to extract a set of signal characteristics from a time domain signal based on the audio signal. The set of signal characteristics is the set of the magnitudes of the discrete Fourier transform coefficients of an acquired time domain signal, or the Fourier transform coefficients themselves. A classifier is connected to the characteristic extraction unit. It is a two-layer neural network that uses the set of signal characteristics to accurately determine whether the acquired time domain signal represents breaking glass.

  • Patent number: 6481124
Abstract: A coupler (11) for connecting a dipper arm (3) of an excavator to a bucket (1) without the need for the operator of the excavator to leave the cab of the excavator, the coupler (11) having means for connecting it to the end of the dipper arm, and means, including a latching hook (17) for connecting it to one of a plurality of different buckets (1) and wherein locking means (25) is provided to prevent inadvertent unlatching of the latching hook (17), said locking means (25) being operable from the cab. The locking means may be gravity operated and include resiliently deformable means (27), thereon to prevent unlatching when the coupler (11) is inverted. Alternatively, it may be spring (71) operated in which case, further means (73, 75) is provided to move the locking means against the bias of the spring. Preferably, the hook (17) has a special internal profile (56, 57, 61) so that when it is supporting the weight of a bucket, it will tend to move to a latching position, not to an unlatching position.
