  • Patent number: 7630806
Abstract: System and method for reacting to an impact involving a motor vehicle in which an anticipatory sensor system assesses the probable severity of the impact based on data obtained prior to the impact and initiates deployment of an external safety device via an actuator in the event an impact above a threshold probable severity is assessed. The anticipatory sensor system includes receivers for receiving waves or energy and a pattern recognition system for analyzing the received waves or energy, or data representative thereof, to assess the probable severity of the impact. The pattern recognition system ascertains the identity of an object from which the waves or energy have been emitted, reflected or generated. The pattern recognition system includes a processor embodying a pattern recognition algorithm designed to provide an output of one of a number of pre-determined identities of the object.

  • Patent number: 7624379
Abstract: Electronic test system including hardware and software components and method of use of same which provide obsolescence mitigation. A set of governing rules for the system is defined and a test program test (TPS) is created to enable units to be tested. When a new component is introduced into the system, the change is detected and a new TPS is created. If the new TPS complies with the rules, testing using the new TPS is possible. If not, a determination is made as to whether any component of the TPS is obsolete and if not, the units can be tested using the new TPS without redefining the rules. When a component of the TPS is obsolete, the rules are reviewed to ascertain the effect of the removal of the component and optionally redefined to enable the new component to be used in combination with the remaining components.

  • Patent number: 7620521
Abstract: Arrangement and method for classifying an occupying item in a seat includes at least one force sensor arranged to measure the force applied to the seat at time intervals, and a processor coupled to the force sensor(s) for receiving the force measurements therefrom. The processor analyzes the force measurements from each force sensor over time to discern patterns in the force measurements and analyzes any discerned pattern to determine if it approximates a known pattern indicative of an animate object or an inanimate object. The processor may be trained to discern patterns providing information about the occupying item by conducting tests in which different occupying items are placed in the seat and measurements of the force applied to the seat are obtained by the force sensor, before, during and after placement of the occupying item in the seat.

  • Patent number: 7610146
Abstract: Vehicle positioning system and method for enabling a vehicle to determine its position while traveling on a road in which an identity of at least one marker is determined as the vehicle passes each marker. The position of each marker is determined from its identification, e.g., with reference to a database, and thus the position of the vehicle, can be determined. Various markers may be used, including fixed markers arranged proximate the road. If three such fixed markers are provided, the position of the vehicle can be determined using triangulation. The fixed markers may be visual markers, passive transponder-type markers, active transponder-type markers and/or reflectors.

  • Patent number: 7604080
Abstract: Vehicle including a system for preventing injury to an occupant's head and neck during a rear impact includes a support structure for supporting the occupant including an upper body support portion for supporting the occupant's head and neck, the support structure having a plurality of different positions selectable by the occupant, and a positioning system for adjusting the position of the support structure prior to the rear impact such that the upper body support portion is closer to and preferably in contact with the occupant's head and neck during the rear impact. As a result, motion of the occupant's head and neck relative to the occupant's back is thereby reduced and preferably eliminated during the rear impact. Whiplash injuries are therefore reduced if not eliminated using the invention.

  • Patent number: 7603894
Abstract: Vehicular tire monitoring system includes an energy providing system arranged on the tire, and a sensor system arranged on the tire and coupled to the energy providing system to be provided with energy by the energy providing system. The sensor system obtains data about at least one property of the tire, such as pressure, and converts the data into signals. An communication system is arranged on a frame of the vehicle and wirelessly communicates with the sensor system to receive the signals from the sensor system and derives, from the signals, the data obtained by the sensor system. A reactive system on the frame of the vehicle may be responsive to the data obtained by the sensor system, e.g., a display to display the data about the tire such as its pressure, or a communications system which transmits data about the tire to a remote site.

  • Patent number: 7602313
Abstract: License plate for a vehicle includes a plate having an indicia and arranged to be mounted on the vehicle, and a transponder arranged in the plate. The transponder is arranged to receive a signal from an interrogator, modify the received signal and transmitted the modified signal to the interrogator. The transponder may be a SAW transponder, an RFID transponder and/or include a reflective or back scattering antenna, a polarization antenna, a rotating antenna, or a corner cube or dihedral reflector. An energy harvesting component can be arranged on the license plate or in the license plate for providing power to the transponder. The energy harvesting component generates energy during or from movement or vibration of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 7596242
Abstract: Method for obtaining information about an occupying item in a compartment in a vehicle includes obtaining a series of images of the compartment, each image being taken at a different time and at least one of which includes the occupying item, comparing a later obtained image from the series of images to at least one previously obtained image from the series of images to ascertain the presence of differences between the images, and analyzing the differences to obtain information about the occupying item. One way to compare images is to subtract the later obtained image from the previously obtained image to determine which image pixels have changed in value and analyze the changed pixels. This analysis may involve analyzing a leading edge of the changed pixels and/or analyzing a width of a field of the changed pixels.

  • Patent number: 7591072
Abstract: Cutting devices including an elongate body having a handle and two rotatable cutting blades mounting on opposite sides of the body. One cutting blade is movable longitudinally relative to the other to enable variation in the longitudinal spacing between the cutting blades. In addition to or instead of the variable longitudinal spacing, one cutting blade is movable transversely relative to the other to enable variation in the transverse spacing between the cutting blades. Other cutting devices include a housing defining a blade-receiving cavity, an actuating mechanism pivotally mounted to the housing and a cutting assembly arranged in the cavity and including cutting blades. The cutting assembly is rotatable relative to the housing to selectively bring each cutting blade into a cutting position, and has a relaxed position in which the cutting blades are recessed within an outer periphery of the housing. The cutting assembly is biased into this relaxed position.

  • Patent number: 7588115
Abstract: System and method for preventing whiplash injuries to an occupant, in particular, during rear impacts, includes a movable headrest associated with the seat and a system for positioning the headrest adjacent a head of the occupant in an impact involving the vehicle. This latter system includes an anticipatory crash sensor system arranged to produce an output signal when an external object is approaching a rear of the vehicle at a velocity above a predetermined velocity, a headrest movement system arranged to move the headrest and a sensor system arranged to determine when the headrest contacts or is proximate the occupant's head. Upon the determination of a pending rear impact between the object and the vehicle, the output signal is produced by the crash sensor system and the headrest is moved into a position in contact with or proximate the occupant's head as determined by the sensor system.

  • Patent number: 7570785
Abstract: Imaging system and method for a vehicle includes an infrared source generating an infrared beam along a particular field-of-view in the vehicle, an infrared detector responsive to infrared radiation reflected from objects in the field-of-view of the infrared beam and which generates image signals from the reflected infrared radiation, and a processor responsive to the image signals from the detector. The processor includes face recognition software that images and identifies facial features of a person to detect a person's face and compares the detected image of the person's face with stored images, and causes a vehicle operation, e.g., ignition of the vehicle, to be performed if a particular person's face is identified. The processor may perform a frame subtracting process where the images when the infrared source is on are subtracted from the images when the infrared source is off so as to eliminate background.
