  • Patent number: 7065156
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing hopped delay diversity for multiple antenna transmissions. In the method and apparatus, an input symbol stream is offset in time by M symbol periods to generate or offset symbol stream. The offset input stream may be offset so as to lead or lag the original input symbol stream. The original input symbol stream is then transmitted on a first set of N antennas and the offset input symbol stream is transmitted on a second set of N antennas, with transmit diversity techniques applied to the transmissions from the first and second set of N antennas.

  • Patent number: 7046642
Abstract: A method and apparatus for dynamically configuring parameters of the radio link protocol layer in a telecommunications system. The method and apparatus allows dynamic configuration of the radio link protocol layer in order to optimize parameters for use with a particular data service. In an embodiment of the invention, radio link protocol control frames used for connection initialization include RLP parameter data. The RLP parameter data is exchanged between two communicating transceiving devices during connection initialization, and is used in each transceiving device to configure subsequently transmitted RLP data frames and transmit retransmission requests accordingly.

  • Patent number: 6816557
Abstract: The present invention presents a method and apparatus for phase hopping and space-time coding signals for transmission on multiple antennas. The method and apparatus provides expansion of a N×N′ space time block code to a M×M′ space time block code, where M>N, by using phase hopping on the symbols within the N×N′ space time block code to allow transmission of the space time block code on a number of diversity antennas greater than N′. A result of M antenna diversity may be achieved for M transmit antennas.

  • Patent number: 6775548
Abstract: A method and apparatus for accessing a telecommunications system. A channel having a plurality of data rates and a plurality of frame sizes is utilized by a mobile station to gain access to the system. If channel conditions allow, a faster data rate of the available data rates and a smaller frame size of the available frame sizes may be used to request access over the channel. By dynamically determining the data rate based on channel conditions, overall access delays for mobile stations using packet data services and making many access attempts may be reduced.

  • Patent number: 6728307
Abstract: An adaptive transmit antenna array having a reduced pilot set is disclosed. The adaptive transmit antenna array utilizes a decision-directed mechanism for the estimation of maximal ratio combining (MRC) weights to be used at a receiver rather than requiring a user-specific pilot to provide estimation information.

  • Patent number: 6584089
Abstract: In a packet data transmission and reception system a media access control (MAC) message is broadcast by a base station to a plurality of mobile stations. The MAC message contains packet data transmission scheduling information which allows the base station to preemptively control mobile station access to traffic channels in order to maximize the efficiency of packet data transmissions and allow scheduling consideration including priority access, quality of service and maximum bytes per transfer. The MAC message consists of a control frame structure which comprises scheduling parameters including MAC IDs fields, activity fields, and a field representing the number of free traffic channels in a cell. These parameters enable multiple mobile stations to share, in a time multiplexed fashion, traffic channels for packet data transmission on CDMA based mobile communication systems.

  • Patent number: 6564061
Abstract: A method and apparatus for class based bandwidth scheduling for Quality of Service (QoS) for radio air interfaces. In an embodiment, users of an air interface are assigned to at least one of a plurality of QoS classes. Each class is assigned an elasticity value. When traffic congestion is determined on the air interface during a time frame, the actual rate of data transmission for each user is reduced according to the elasticity of the class to which the user belongs.

  • Patent number: 6542556
Abstract: A method and apparatus for space-time coding signals for transmission on multiple antennas. A received input symbol stream is transformed using a predefined transform and transmitted on a first set of N antennas. The same input symbol stream is then offset by M symbol periods to generate an offset input symbol stream. The offset input symbol stream is then transformed using the predefined transform and transmitted on a second set of N antennas. A third through Xth set of N antennas may be utilized for transmission by successively offsetting the offset input symbol stream by an additional M symbol periods for each additional set of N antennas used, before performing the transform and transmitting on the additional set of N antennas.

  • Patent number: 6535564
Abstract: A method and apparatus for adaptively quantizing a digital signal prior to digital-to-analog conversion during pulse shaping in a pulse-amplitude modulated (PAM) system. In the method and apparatus, scaling constants applied to the input signal prior to digital-to-analog conversion change according to the time-varying periodic probability density function (pdf) of the input signal. Spectral components added to the signal due to the adaptive scaling of the method may be removed by performing adaptive amplification on the output signal of the DAC before transmission as a PAM signal.

  • Patent number: 6510148
Abstract: This invention applies to a mobile station that is able to determine a required data rate based on data buffer usage. If the data buffer indicates a requirement for a high data rate transmission, the mobile station sends a request to a base station to be assigned multiple parallel code channels. If the multiple parallel code channels are granted, the mobile station uses the channels for transmitting data to the base station until either the data buffer becomes empty, or a base station time-out occurs, or the mobile station is signalled by the base station to reduce its data transmission rate, whichever occurs first. The mobile station of this invention is enabled to autonomously control the data rate during an assigned period for high speed transmission, so as to lower the data rate when needed for the purpose of improving coverage and/or to avoid operating in a power limited condition, thereby degrading link quality.

  • Patent number: 6498785
Abstract: A method and apparatus for power control on a first channel that is shared by multiple mobile stations transmitting to base stations in a telecommunication system. An initial mobile station transmission power level is set on the first channel that is shared in the random access mode. The transmission power level may be determined based on a desired performance level of the first channel. The method and system may be efficiently applied on a channel that carries a transmission in one or more bursts, with each burst including the same or a varying number of frames of varying sizes. The method and apparatus utilizes a second channel that is shared by multiple mobile stations for transmitting the power control signaling from the base stations to the mobile stations.

  • Patent number: 6459689
Abstract: A method and system for mobile assisted handoff between base stations using different carrier frequencies in a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) cellular system. In the method and apparatus, a mobile station performs handoff measurements on forward link transmissions of handoff candidate CDMA base stations, where the forward link transmissions are transmitted on a carrier frequency that differs from the forward link carrier frequency of the current base station. The handoff measurements are performed during selected transmission frames that define transmission periods on the reverse link by the mobile station. During the measurement time in the selected transmission frame, the mobile station does not receive (punctures) data sent to it on the forward link and does not transmit data on the reverse link.

  • Patent number: 6393008
Abstract: A method and system for transmitting packet data over a cellular telecommunications network is presented. A novel medium access control (MAC) logical layer is implemented between a service option layer and multiplex sublayer. The MAC layer handles the multiple accesses of packet users over selected dedicated traffic channels. The MAC layer provides a multiple access control function for packet data users only. Users requiring only circuit switched services (voice calls) are not serviced through the MAC layer multiple access control function. If a user has simultaneous circuit switched and packet data services operating, the MAC layer multiple access control function handles the packet data services, while the circuit switched services are handled simultaneously by bypassing the MAC layer multiple access control function.

  • Patent number: 6381453
Abstract: An apparatus and method, in a telecommunications network having a first and a second system, for activating and deactivating call forwarding from a dual mode subscriber station's number in the second system to the subscriber station's number in the first system. A first message is transmitted upon initiation of communication between the subscriber station and the first system. If it is determined that a data field in the first message is in the first state, call forwarding from the subscriber number of the second system to the subscriber number of the first system is activated. If the data field is in a second state, call forwarding from the subscriber number of the second system to the subscriber number of the first system is not activated. An indication of at least one type of selected subsequent event, upon which the user of the subscriber station desires to deactivate the call forwarding may also be included in the first message.
