Abstract: The molecular mechanisms of peroxisome biogenesis have begun to emerge: in contrast, relatively little is known about how the organelle functions as cells age. The present inventors characterized age-related changes in peroxisomes of human cells and showed that aging compromises peroxisomal targeting signal 1 (PTS 1) protein import, with the critical antioxidant enzyme, catalase, especially affected. The number and appearance of peroxisomes are altered in these cells, and the organelles accumulate the PTS1-import receptor, Pex5p, on their membranes. Concomitantly, cells produce increasing amounts of the toxic metabolite, H2O2, and this increased load of reactive oxygen species (ROS) may further reduce peroxisomal protein import and exacerbate the effects of aging.
Abstract: A photon detector has a photocathode for the photon-induced triggering of measuring electrons. Spatial position information is supplied by an at least one-dimensional electron-detector pixel array. An electron optics unit serves for guiding the measuring electrons to the array. Each pixel (19) has an electronic converter unit (20) for converting an analog measuring signal of the pixel (19) into a digital measuring signal, which incorporates a discriminator for background suppression. An electronic post-processing unit (39) serves for processing the digital measuring signal. The converter unit (20) of each pixel (19) has at least one clock generator (36), as well as at least one counter (29, 30), which is in signal connection with the clock generator (36) and discriminator (27) for generation of a digital timing signal.

Abstract: A multi-link telescopic cover includes a cover assembly having a plurality of shield plates fitted in sequence to be extended and telescoped along a telescopic orientation and a link assembly having a set of parallel first linkages, a set of parallel second linkages and four short linkages. The first linkages and the second linkages are crosswise and are tilted relative to the telescopic orientation of the cover assembly. A number of the first linkages is identical to that of the second linkage, and a number of the shield plates less the number of the first linkages is two. Each of the first linkages and the second linkages are connected to three of the continuous shield plates respectively and the short linkages are connected to the first and second shield plates from opposite ends of the cover assembly.

Abstract: An electric socket includes an insulating main member, two check securing devices, and a release device. The insulating main member has apertures thereon and electrodes behind the apertures. The check securing device is provided in the insulating main member having a suspended flexible section sloping toward a bottom end of the aperture. When a plug has prongs inserted into the apertures, the prongs will bend the flexible section of the check securing device inwards. An interference condition will be occurred between the prong and the flexible section when the plug is pulled out. The release device is provided on the insulating main member for manipulation. The release device has a arm pressing the flexible section of the check securing device bending inwards when it is pressed for releasing the interference condition between the prong and the flexible section.
Abstract: The invention relates to a cell culture insert (1) comprising a beaker-shaped insert wall (11), a base (9) consisting of a membrane filter, projecting support arms (3, 4) that are distributed around the periphery of the top and lateral spacers (7, 8) for a vertical and horizontal orientation in a well (2) containing a liquid culture medium (N) in a cell culture plate. According to the invention, the spacers (7, 8) are distributed around the periphery of the cell culture insert (1) and have different radial lengths in such a way that a large feed opening (5) and several smaller openings (5A) are formed.
Abstract: A phyto-composition is described for the treatment of joint diseases that comprises: a) from 0.01% to 26% in weight of an extract of Curcuma longa (turmeric); b) from 30% to 80% in weight of an extract of Harpagophytum procumbens, (devil's claws); c) from 0.01% to 25% in weight of an extract of Filipendula ulmaria (meadowsweet); and d) from 7% to 35% in weight of oil of Oenothera biennis (onagra). Said phyto-composition being used in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle in order to obtain a pharmaceutical composition useful in the treatment of joint diseases, particularly, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Abstract: A pixel structure of a thin film transistor liquid crystal display employs a design of three metal layers and includes an organic insulating layer between a data signal line and a common electrode for reducing a parasitic capacitance, while a passivation layer included between the common electrode and a pixel electrode acts as a storage capacitor required for the pixels, so as to achieve a high aperture ratio, and the common electrode can act as a shielding bar for enhancing the display contrast.
