Abstract: The high-performance sliding rack ratchet tensioner is inexpensively manufactured. A rack having rack teeth is slidingly received in a rack slot on the side of the piston. The rack slot is preferably open-ended on the end facing the tensioner arm. The rack and piston are both received in a piston bore in the tensioner body. The rack length is preferably shorter than the rack slot length to provide backlash. A pawl mounted in a pawl bore perpendicular to the rack bore engages the rack. The open-ended rack slot allows the rack to be inserted after the piston during assembly. The rack and pawl preferably have shark fin-shaped teeth. The pawl preferably has dummy teeth to ensure that the load is shared by the center teeth.

Abstract: A system for positioning a device such as a valve with a mechanical input using a fluid operated actuator, a mechanical position feedback member coupled to a feedback element of the fluid operated actuator and an activation fluid valve. The fluid operated actuator has an output coupled to the mechanical input of the valve, a feedback element for mechanically indicating a position of the valve, and inputs for actuating fluid, such that fluid at the inputs causes the fluid operated actuator to move in opposing directions. The activation fluid valve has outputs coupled to the inputs of the fluid operated actuator, a first opposing force input coupled to the mechanical position feedback member and a second opposing force input coupled to a control input force. The position of the activation fluid valve is controlled by a balance between the force from the mechanical feedback member and the control input force.

The optoelectronic module also includes driver circuitry fabricated of the first layered structure and a diode laser fabricated of the second layered structure. The driver circuitry produces a drive electrical signal supplied to the diode laser, and the diode laser produces an optical output in response to the drive electrical signal. In a preferred embodiment, the optoelectronic module also includes a temperature-sensitive element fabricated of the first or the second layered structure. The temperature-sensitive element produces a temperature dependent control signal related to the diode laser temperature.
Abstract: Processes and apparatus produce economically feasible biodiesel without subsidies. Toward that end, integrated small plants process materials containing lipids with anhydrous bioethanol as solvent and reactant, and sulfuric acid and potassium hydroxide mainly as catalysts to produce up to 3 million gallons of biodiesel per plant per year. The product is predominantly fatty acids ethyl esters (FAEE) and a chemically-enhanced organic fertilizer as byproduct. The raw material may include a wide variety of non-edible solid matter that contains lipids, which normally have from 0.5% to 80% by weight of free fatty acids in total oils. Multiple apparatus makes this process feasible. In addition to not competing with food production, since they supply fertilizer for small scale farmers, the processes and apparatus allow sustainable liquid fuel production.
Abstract: An active centerpoint bus balancing system which actively maintains centerpoint voltage balance of the output capacitors in a power supply having a multi-level voltage output. The centerpoint voltage balance is maintained by a novel control circuit which efficiently transfers charge from one capacitor to the other capacitor so as to maintain the same voltage on each output capacitor. The centerpoint voltage balance minimizes the effect of loading conditions. It operates even with no load, and allows severe load unbalance on the two output capacitors without creating voltage unbalance.
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for unloading and placing rails in a track parallel to another existing track, which is assembled in the rear of the rail carrier train (Tc), which runs on the existing main track (Vd), coupled in a series of auxiliary wagons (V1, V2, V3), and formed by a series of metal structures (P1, . . . , P9) fixed in said auxiliary wagons added in the rear of the rail carrier train, which determine several fixed guiding points longitudinally distributed in a suitable manner along these auxiliary wagons, both in the transverse and in the vertical direction, in a smooth transition and according to the standards in relation to the radii and buckling of the rail, from its transport position on the rail carrier (Tc) to its definitive position on the bearing plate of the crossties previously positioned in an also definitive place on the subgrade of the parallel track (Vp).

Abstract: A method and apparatus for in-situ lift-out rapid preparation of TEM samples. The invention uses adhesives and/or spring-loaded locking-clips in order to place multiple TEM-ready sample membranes on a single TEM support grid and eliminates the use of standard FIB-assisted metal deposition as a bonding scheme. Therefore, the invention circumvents the problem of sputtering from metal deposition steps and also increases overall productivity by allowing for multiple samples to be produced without opening the FIB/SEM vacuum chamber.

Abstract: A pivot joint for a single blade spring tensioner or double blade spring tensioner generates a biased friction loss at a pivot joint. The friction torque generated in one direction of joint rotation is greater than the friction torque generated in the opposite direction of rotation. In one embodiment, the direction of torque bias at the joints is used to make the damping of the blade spring greater in compression than in extension. High damping in compression and low damping in extension is a desirable characteristic for a tensioner in most applications. The device may be designed to act as a one-way clutch or as a two-way clutch. The device may also be designed to apply large friction torques only when the joint undergoes large amplitude motions (loss of control).
