  • Patent number: 7555027
Abstract: A quantum dot laser operates on a quantum dot ground-state optical transition. The laser has a broadband (preferably ?15 nm) spectrum of emission and a high output power (preferably ?100 mW). Special measures control the maximum useful pump level, the total number of quantum dots in the laser active region, the carrier relaxation to the quantum dot ground states, and the carrier excitation from the quantum dot ground states. In one embodiment, a spectrally-selective loss is introduced into the laser resonator in order to suppress lasing on a quantum dot excited-state optical transition, thereby increasing the bandwidth of the emission spectrum.

  • Patent number: 7552064
Abstract: A business method that uses a coordinator to insure that a shipper is able to retrieve shipping platforms from a recycler or other such end receivers. A permanent identification representing the recycling and reuse program and the particular type of shipping platform is assigned, and is stenciled on shipping platforms. When the shipping platforms are used and reach an end recipient or recycler, the quantity and type of shipping platform are registered at the web site. The site is accessible for buyers, such as the shipper that entered into the program to retrieve shipping platforms they had used. Transactions are carried out through the coordinator.

  • Patent number: 7540821
Abstract: The compact, all-gear full-traction differential includes meshing pairs of side-gear worms and worm-wheel balance gears having a “hybrid” design. Preferably, the teeth of each side-gear worm have an involute profile but are cut with only plunge feed, while the teeth of the worm-wheel portions of the balance gears are helicoid worms having tip and root modifications made by a concave-shaped cutter. The side-gear worm teeth have a helix angle equal to or greater than 45° and significantly chamfered ends, and the gears are designed to provide a gear ratio between 1.5:1 and 2.5:1. The numbers of teeth in the spur-gear portion and worm-wheel portion of each balance gear and in each side-gear worm are all divisible by 2 or by 3, preferably by both 2 and 3.

  • Patent number: 7507697
Abstract: A method for cleaning the surfaces of food processing equipment that are heavily soiled with food processing byproducts, such as grease, starch and proteinaceous materials. The cleaning method consists of applying two separate aqueous cleaning solutions that are mixed together. One solution contains an aqueous oxidizing agent and the other solution contains a source of aqueous hydroxide ions. Both solutions are mixed together immediately prior to being applied to the soiled surfaces. The combined formulation utilizes the weak Bronsted acidity of the oxidizing agents in interaction with the hydroxide ions to generate perhydroxyl ions and other active oxygen species, which are significantly more effective at cleaning heavily soiled food processing equipment than each cleaning solution alone.

  • Patent number: 7498929
Abstract: An apparatus and method are presented which are used by operators of trail vehicles to share information with each other about the number of vehicles in their group of trail users. A display module attached to a vehicle displays a number which indicates how many vehicles are in that vehicle's party. As oncoming trail users pass each other, they can read the value of the displayed numeral and know instantly how many vehicles to expect before the path is clear of traffic. The display module projects a number which is changeable, user determined, and has optical properties that allow the drivers of passing vehicles to readily convey information to each other.

  • Patent number: 7482818
Abstract: Systems and methods are described for detecting the presence and/or absence of a solid, liquid or gas which utilize an RF energy emitter and RF energy detector for determining whether a solid, liquid or gas is present within a defined physical space. More specifically, an RF energy emitter is provided at a first side of a solid, liquid or gas transmission channel and an RF energy receiver/detector is provided at an opposite side of the solid liquid or gas fluid channel. The RF energy emitter either continuously or periodically emits RF energy which in the preferred exemplary embodiment is in the high-frequency or more preferably ultrahigh frequency signal range. The amount of detected RF energy transferred across the channel is used in determining the presence and/or absence of a solid, liquid or gas.

  • Patent number: 7479109
Abstract: A replaceable cornea contactor for an eye examining instrument is made to be discarded after each use. A bendable tab molded on the cornea contactor is deformed by a strain gauge as the cornea contactor is inserted into a cornea contactor holder, and a signal from the strain gauge is used to verify that a previously unused cornea contactor has been inserted into the holder. A microprocessor is programmed to recognize the signal produced by initial deformation of the cornea contactor tab so as to proceed with an eye examination only after receiving the strain gauge signal verifying that a previously unused cornea contactor has been inserted.

  • Patent number: 7476168
Abstract: A closed loop chain tensioner system having a drive sprocket, one or more driven sprockets, a first mechanical tensioner located adjacent a slack strand and a second mechanical tensioner located adjacent a tight strand. Each tensioner is independently pivotally mounted to the engine block. The mounting point may be located at any point along the length of each tensioner. The tensioners are then linked to each other by a rigid, solid link. This solid link enables the tensioners to act in unison, thus providing damping across both strands of chain in response to engine torsional variations.

  • Patent number: 7475792
Abstract: A beverage container having an inner core and an outer shell, relatively rotatable such that a spiral groove in the inner core can be rotationally aligned with cooling flanges on the outside of the outer shell for cleaning, or rotated to close the cooling flanges, forming a cooling tube from the inside of the inner core to a drinking tube at the top of the container, thereby cooling a beverage that is drawn through the cooling flanges by radiating heat into the ambient environment.

  • Patent number: 7475617
Abstract: The transmission includes an orbital gear complex in combination with a variable hydraulic pump and motor. The input to the transmission is increased in speed by the orbital gearing such that, when the pump and motor are not operating, the orbiter is stationary, and the orbital gearing produces an overdrive condition. A gear reduction is accomplished by rotating the web with the web-rotating device, providing a high gear reduction. The pump and motor are preferably long-piston hydraulic machines with infinitely variable swash plates. The hydraulic machines preferably have wobblers stabilized by full gimbals and hold-down plates with elongated holes for the long pistons to eliminate possible impacts between the hold-down plates and the head ends of the long pistons when the swash-plates are at or near their maximum angle of inclination.

  • Patent number: 7473231
Abstract: An applanation tonometer and its operation involve an actuator pressing a prism with a variable and determinable force against a cornea of an eye while a source directs light to reflect from an applanation surface of the prism to a detector producing a detected light signal received by a microprocessor. Such a tonometer produces a diastolic phase signal and a systolic phase signal representing the complete intra ocular pressure experience of the eye being examined. The signal information allows combined diastolic and systolic IOP to be determined in several corroborating ways and also yields measures of ocular blood flow and tonography.

  • Patent number: 7455607
Abstract: A tensioner that includes a piston supported slidably in a piston bore formed in a housing, a piston spring biasing the piston in the protruding direction, and a circlip member having an expandable ring-shaped body that is engageable with the rack teeth of the piston. In the piston bore, the ring-shaped body of the circlip member is adapted to engage with an upper and lower stop surface. The rack teeth of the piston are formed in such a shape that when the ring-shaped body of the circlip member engages with the upper stop surface of the piston bore, the piston is permitted to move in the protruding direction and, when the ring-shaped body of the circlip member engages with the lower stop surface of the piston bore, the piston restricts movement in the retracting direction.
