  • Patent number: 5105907
Abstract: An improved intermediate support is provided for ensuring the safety of a worker while moving relative to a fixed structure at elevated locations, with the worker being secured by a lanyard to a safety or fall restraint cable. The intermediate support is secured to the fixed structure, and includes a supporting plate having a notch along the periphery thereof for receiving the safety cable, and a pair of opposing hook members positioned on opposite sides of the supporting plate. The hook members prevent the safety cable from inadvertently or intentionally moving out of the notch. The method of the present invention ensures that an end of the lanyard secured to the safety cable may be quickly and easily moved sequentially past one hook member, then the supporting plate, and then the other hook member to allow the worker to efficiently and safely move past the intermediate support.

  • Patent number: 5101572
Abstract: A displacement following device comprises a slider (1) mounted on a slideway (2) for movement along a linear displacement path. A beam (4) mounted on the slider (1) is rotatable about an axis of rotation (5) at its midpoint. A pair of stops (6, 7) spaced apart along the displacement path are fixed to the slideway (2) on opposite sides of the beam (4) and project into the path of movement of the beam. A tension spring (8) has one end connected (at 10) to the slider (1) and its other end connected to a point (9) between the axis of rotation (5) and one end of the beam. The spring (8) biases the beam (4) about its axis of rotation (5) into engagement with the stops (6, 7) so as to bias the slider (1) relative to the slideway (2) into a datum position from which the slider is bidirectionally displaceable along the displacement path.

  • Patent number: 5099934

In order to reduce bit whirl, the cutting elements are so disposed as to apply a resultant lateral imbalance force to the bit as it rotates during drilling and the gauge of the bit body is provided with low friction bearing pads to transmit said resultant lateral force to the sides of the borehole. Each low friction bearing pad includes an outwardly facing cavity which is connected to the passage by a choked conduit so that, in use, drilling fluid under pressure is delivered to the cavity, which thereby acts as a low friction hydrostatic bearing surface.

  • Patent number: 5092742
Abstract: A sampling pump is provided suitable for pumping a discrete quantity of either a liquid or a gas per pump stroke from a flow line to a sample vessel. An operator unit drives a piston within the pump bore, and controls the stroke of the piston and thus the quantity of fluid pumped per stroke. A balanced check valve mechanism controls flow from the pump bore to the pump outlet port, and is provided within and carried by the piston. Line pressure acts on the operator end of the piston to assist the operator in driving the piston during its power stroke. A manifold may be secured to the pump body, and has a flow path therein which is in communication with the inlet port to the pump bore. The pump may also be used for injection purposes to introduce a selected quantity of fluid to a high pressure line.

  • Patent number: 5090496
Abstract: A bent motor housing has a top end by which it is connected to the end of a drill string within a borehole and a bottom end on which a drill bit is mounted for drilling the borehole. A bend is provided intermediate the top and bottom ends for angularly offsetting the rotational axis of the drill bit relative to the longitudinal axis of the drill string to cause the drill bit to engage the wall of the borehole on one side. Furthermore a longitudinal bore provided for passage of a motor shaft extends from the top end to the bottom end of the housing and is concentrically disposed with respect to the top end and the bottom end but eccentrically disposed with respect to intermediate housing sections so as to form a stand-off portion in the vicinity of the bend for bearing against the wall of the borehole on the opposite side to that engaged by the drill bit so as to cause the angle of tilt .THETA.

  • Patent number: 5090658
Abstract: An improved rotary valve is provided with a bellows surrounding a bent shaft to create a hermetic seal and thereby prevent fluid loss from the interior of the valve body. The shaft is provided within a seal assembly housing, and has a lower end axis offset from the valve stem axis, and an upper end axis offset from the lower end axis. The bellows is fixedly secured at its upper end to the seal assembly housing and at its lower end to an end cap to prevent fluid within the cavity from passing out the seal assembly housing. An epicyclic gearing assembly is provided within the cavity and mechanically interconnects the lower end of the shaft to the valve stem. An actuator may be provided for connection with the upper end of the shaft for rotating the shaft. The activating device of the present invention may be used for rotating various members mounted within an enclosure with sealing the enclosure from the environment.

  • Patent number: 5090972
Abstract: Improved techniques are provided for improving the environment of hazardous material abatement personnel operating within an enclosed working area while conducting, for example, asbestos removal operations. A negative pressure is established within the working area by a portable air moving unit, which exhausts air from the working area to prevent hazardous material leakage. The exhausted air is filtered, a significant portion of the exhausted air is conditioned by a portable refrigeration, heating and dehumidification system, and the temperature controlled air is returned to the working area. An air diverter is provided for regulating the ratio of the discharged air to the returned and conditioned air in response to the sensed pressure level within the working area. The temperature of the working area is regulated, thereby substantially increasing worker productivity and reducing safety risks.
