Abstract: A paint roller is comprised of a thermoplastic tubular core and a cover fabric heat-fused thereto without an intermediate adhesive. The fabric is wound around the core in a helical path, and the core is heat-softened in the zone of winding to fuse the fabric to the core as it is wound thereon.

Abstract: A double pump adapted for use as an artificial heart includes two ventricle-simulating chambers that are provided with respective inlets and outlets having valves incorporated therein and that are separated by a common partitioning wall structure. The wall structure has sections that are driven away from each other to reduce the volumes of respective ventricle chambers and expel liquid from the chambers through the outlets. The wall structure can also move laterally in response to differences in pressure between the chambers and hence change the volumetric ratio between them. This ensures a balanced action between the two halves of the heart-simulating pump during a systole phase and a diastole phase. The link mechanism is actuated by a cord through a motor, although only in one direction in the pressure phase, and hence the aforementioned changed volumes are readjusted primarily through the pressure exerted by the inflowing fluid.

Abstract: A method of operating an absorption heat pump or refrigerator consisting at least of a refrigerant circuit and a refrigerant-containing solution circuit, with a generator for evaporating refrigerant from the solution with the supply of relatively high-temperature heat, a condenser for condensing refrigerant and giving up heat at an intermediate temperature level, an evaporator for evaporating refrigerant with the absorption of heat from a relatively cold heat source, a heat exchanger for transferring heat from the liquid passing out of the condenser to the refrigerant vapor and liquid coming from the evaporator, an absorber for absorbing refrigerant vapor into the solution with the giving-up of heat at an intermediate temperature level, and means for circulating the solution or maintaining the pressure, wherein the delivery of refrigerant is regulated in such a manner that the temperature differential .DELTA.t.sub.

Abstract: In the particular embodiments of the invention disclosed in the specification, a single crystal silicon plate having heavy metal impurities is coated with a layer of amorphous silicon several hundred to several thousand Angstroms thick in a vacuum vessel by a glow discharge at a pressure of 1 to 10 Torr and a temperature of about 200.degree. C. Silane gas is used to form a non-doped layer and about 1% of diborane or phosphine gas may be added to form a p-type or an n-type layer, respectively. The glow discharge is produced by a high frequency voltage applied to electrodes in the vacuum vessel but a direct current discharge may be used initially to provide improved adhesion of the layer. When the plate is heated above the crystallization temperature of the a-Si layer, heavy metal impurities are gettered from the single crystal.

Abstract: Tug/barge apparatus comprises a barge with a notch in the stern shaped to receive the bow of a tug, and the barge being coupled to the tug by a rigid coupling member on the barge which is adapted to be releasably retained in a bearing socket member formed in the bow of the tug. The coupling member is made buoyant enough to float on the water and the bearing member is located in the vicinity of the water line at the bow of the tug so that the two are at essentially the same level when the tug moves into the notch in the stern of the barge to effect a coupling operation. The coupling and bearing members are releasably retained in coupled relation and prevented from inadvertent uncoupling thereof.

Abstract: In the representative radiation detectors described in the specification, an amorphous silicon layer is grown on one or both of the opposed electrode surfaces of a single crystal silicon substrate and the amorphous silicon layer extends to the side surface of the substrate. The corresponding electrode is deposited on the amorphous silicon layer. Detectors may also be made using a single crystal of Ge, GeAs or CdTe with an amorphous layer of the same or another semiconductor material.

Abstract: The invention relates to a device for reproduction and tracing by forming an image of an original, at desired scale which is produced by at least one lens, on a screen on which a sheet of photosensitive materials, such as a picture film, or tracing paper is extended, comprising separate illumination systems for reproduction and tracing, wherein the illumination system for tracing is retracted in a retraced position located off the lighting space of the illumination system for reproduction, and turned over so as to eliminate spoilage of the quality of the reproduced picture by diminishing irregular reflection from the illumination system for tracing to the lens when a part of light from the illumination system for reproduction is emitted thereto during the reproduction operation.

Abstract: A machine for separating single plies of fabric from a stack of fabric plies uses a roller provided with a fabric ply engaging mechanism. The roller engages the top ply of fabric and removes it with a rolling action. The engaging mechanism comprises a pivotable rod mounted on the roller and provided with protruding pins which engage the top ply of fabric from the stack as the rod is pivoted. The machine can be arranged to sort alternate plies of fabric from one stack into separate stacks. The machine can be provided with an adjustable support for holding the stack and with a detector for detecting the presence of a single fabric ply on the roller.

Abstract: A device for continuous injection of fuel into the intake line of a multi-cylinder mixture-compressing internal combustion engine is described, the said engine comprising an air pump (9) delivering a carrier air current branched off the intake line (2) and a fuel pump (4) which delivers the fuel from a fuel tank (3) to a metering device (7), apportioning the fuel to the carrier air current as a function of the operating state of the internal combustion engine. In order to ensure the best possible uniform and precise metering of the fuel of the fuel to the individual cylinders of the internal combustion engine, means for dividing the carrier air current among the carrier air injection lines (29) separately associated with the individual cylinders of the internal combustion engine are to be provided. Furthermore, the metering device is to be constituted by an injection valve (7) with injection lines (1) (36) each separately associated with the carrier air injection lines (29) and opening into the same (FIG. 1).
