  • Patent number: 4681643
Abstract: A solid or semisolid propellant comprising grains of propellant or propellant components bonded together so as to create voids within the propellant volume, said grains bonded together with sufficient strength to substantially delay the fluidization of the propellant by the onset of Taylor unstable burning, said propellant having a rapid burn rate below that associated with Taylor unstable burn. In another embodiment, the grains are held within and the voids are filled with viscous fluid binder such as a petroleum oil, said binder functioning to hinder Taylor unsatable burning and yet permit very rapid burning within the propellant volume.

  • Patent number: 4681268
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for comminuting a coarse lump mineral material in an autogenous grinding system, in which feed to the grinder is divided into a coarse fraction and a fine fraction. The coarse fraction is coarser than the inflection point on the coarse side of the knee of the particle size distribution curve of the charge of said autogenous grinder; the fine fraction is substantially all finer than the point of intersection between two tangents drawn between the adjacent inflection points on either side of the knee of the particle size distribution curve of the charge. The ratio between the amounts of fractions is determined on the basis of achieving a given charge quantity for a particular, selected set point power value for the mill in question, and determined with respect to a selected degree of grinding. Grinding efficiency is greatly increased by selecting feed sizes in accordance with the present invention.

  • Patent number: 4680176
Abstract: The invention relates to live deletion mutants of a herpesvirus, especially of Pseudorabies virus. The genomes of the mutants differ from the genomes of the parent strain by the presence of one or more deletions selected from a deletion in the inverted repeats, a deletion in the unique sequence, and a deletion in the thymidine kinase gene. The new deletion mutants are avirulent, do not induce latent infections, are stable and possess good immunogenic properties. The invention also relates to vaccines containing the new mutant strains.

  • Patent number: 4679954
Abstract: A pen comprises an elongated one-piece barrel having substantially rigid tip end and head end portions joined to each other by an intermediate integral flexible portion, whereby the barrel can be bent at the flexible portion, and a writing tip at the distal end of the tip end portion. A substantially rigid tubular cap member is telescopically received over the tip end portion of the barrel such that it can be moved along the barrel between (1) a retracted position in which it overlies part of the tip end portion and substantially all of the flexible portion, thus exposing the writing tip for use and rendering the pen substantially rigid, and (2) an extended position in which it covers the writing tip and leaves the flexible portion exposed, thus protecting the writing tip and rendering the pen flexible. At least one boss on the inner surface of the cap is received in a slot extending coextensively with the distance between the extended and retracted positions.

  • Patent number: 4679095
Abstract: A novel method of scanning and recording image and an apparatus for use thereof in which: plural original pictures are attached to an original picture cylinder; the trim-region of each original picture is designated on the original picture cylinder prior to recording a duplicate image; the image signals obtained by photoelectric scanning of the original picture from within its trim-region are sampled; the data thus sampled are subjected to statistical classification and treatment for obtaining the density data of each original picture; based on this density data, the scanning condition data necessary for the optimum gradation correction and optimum color correction are determined; these scanning condition data are stored at every original picture; and at the same time, the scanning condition data which were stored at every scanning of the original picture are successively set in the image scanning and recording apparatus, in photoelectric scanning for recording the duplicate image; thus sequential scanning an
