  • Patent number: 4434092
Abstract: Spent control rods from nuclear reactors are prepared for disposal by cutting off their handle ends and their velocity limiter ends by a cut off saw positioned in a pit underwater. The saw is driven by an air motor which is controlled outside the pit and has its exhaust carried up out of the water through a conduit. The control rods so truncated are packed into shielded casks for transport while the handle ends and velocity limiter ends are left in the pit or alternatively are loaded into separate shielded containers.

  • Patent number: 4434453
Abstract: A task lighting assembly having a task lighting fixture secured in overlying relationship with respect to a work station, a building wall member disposed adjacent to the lighting fixture and adjacent to the work station and the lighting fixture having an upper wall, a front wall depending from the upper wall and an inwardly projecting lower wall projecting from the front wall. At least one light source receiving recess is defined between the walls. A light discharging opening is disposed between the lower wall and the building wall member. The lower wall is of sufficient length so that no significant portion of the light emitted by a light source in the recess will travel directly downwardly to illuminate the work station. The fixture preferably has no lens. The work station is illuminated primarily through reflected radiation. The undersurface of the upper wall preferably has a reflectance of at least about 80 percent. A task lighting fixture suitable for use in the above-described assembly.

  • Patent number: 4433788
Abstract: A simple and inexpensive skeleton frame for a fabricated structure for housing electrical equipment comprises upstanding legs which are arranged at the corners of the frame and which are secured together at the top and bottom of the frame by endless flexible frame metal bands surrounding the legs and maintained in tension by bracing devices positioned between the legs. Each bracing device comprises a central hub, elongate braces extending outwardly from the hub and each engaging a leg, and screw threaded adjustable means for urging the braces outwardly to maintain the endless band under such a tension that the frame is held rigid. The bottom, sides and top of the frame are clad with sheet metal and a hinged door.

  • Patent number: 4432424
Abstract: A lift loader is provided having two drive motors, each of which drives a vehicle wheel through a gearing arrangement located in a separate transmission housing, in which case each transmission housing is designed as a supporting structural component and is flanged at each transmission housing of the assigned drive motor and supports a wheel hub, in which case a closed vehicle frame is formed by the fact that two lateral struts project out from a rear cross bar, which advantageously can be the counterweight, where one of the two transmission housings is attached to each of these lateral struts toward the front, and where the two drive motors, each flanged at one end on a transmission housing, are connected with each other at the opposite ends such that together they form a front cross bar for the frame.

  • Patent number: 4430918
Abstract: An electronic stringed instrument which uses electrical resistance wires as strings to control the frequency of electrically generated sounds. By shorting a string at various points along its length a variable voltage output is obtained and converted into a known frequency. A fretted instrument provides a means to incrementally control the voltage output and a non-fretted type instrument with a conducting fingerboard can provide a means to variably control the voltage output. A separate current source may be provided for each string to facilitate chord playing and a control for the intensity and harmonic content of the signals is provided. An internal power supply and speaker may also be employed to make the instrument readily portable.

  • Patent number: 4430875
Abstract: In a method of rolling tubes in a stretch-reducing rolling mill having a group drive in which the elongation, and therefore the tension is increased by increasing the speed of an auxiliary drive motor relative to that of a main drive motor, the length of the trailing "thickened end", which must be rejected as scrap, is reduced by increasing the elongation from the point in time at which the start of the trailing end portion of the tube reaches the last stand. This trailing end portion is that portion which receives a larger wall thickness than the central portion of the tube as a result of the reduced tension exerted in the trailing end portion of prior art practices. The start of this trailing end portion can be predicted from experience or by rolling a sample tube without subjecting its trailing end portion to the said increased elongation and measuring the wall thickness at the trailing end portion of the sample tube.

  • Patent number: 4429607
Abstract: A musical instrument is disclosed in which light beams striking a detector produce various tones and the loudness of the sounds produced is dependent upon the intensity of the light beam which can be changed by interrupting the beam or reflecting the light backwards to a detector situated next to the light source. A special amplifier circuit is provided which responds to both the amount of light beam interruption as well as the rapidity of interruption. The invention can be variously embodied in woodwind, string and percussion instruments and can also be used on a stage and controlled by moving dancers or musicians.
