Abstract: Novel methods for the treatment and/or prophylaxis of diseases caused by tissue-adhering bacteria are disclosed. By interacting with periplasmic molecular chaperones it is achieved that the assembly of pili is prevented or inhibited and thereby the infectivity of the bacteria is diminished. Also disclosed are methods for screening for drugs as well as methods for the de novo design of such drugs, methods which rely on novel computer drug modelling methods involving an approximative calculation of binding free energy between macromolecules. Finally, novel pyranosides which are believed to be capable of interacting with periplasmic molecular chaperones are also disclosed.

Abstract: The torque detection device for a wave gearing comprises a strain gauge unit having a strain gauge pattern. The strain gauge pattern includes circular-arc shaped detection segments A and B, and three terminal portions for external wiring with one being formed between the detection segments and the others at opposite ends thereof. The strain gauge unit having the strain gauge pattern can be mounted on the diaphragm of a flexible external gear by a simple operation of positioning the strain gauge unit on the diaphragm and connecting the three terminal portions to the external wirings. Compared to the case where a large number of perpendicular biaxial strain gauges are positioned and wired to form a bridge circuit, the wiring operation can be simplified, the mounting space can be reduced, and errors in detected signals due to the positioning errors of the strain gauges can also be reduced.
Abstract: A printer determines the condition of connection with a peripheral device. When detecting a paper ejector is connected, the printer reads out the model name and the serial number, for identifying the paper ejector, stored in a memory, and transmits the model name and the serial number to a server connected to a network. Then, the printer receives a program for controlling the paper ejector from the server, and writes the received control program into a rewritable nonvolatile memory. The printer executes the control program to thereby control the peripheral device connected to the printer.
Abstract: A screen-printing plate is provided with a plurality of printing patterns disposed in a single plate frame. Each printing pattern is formed with a plurality of mesh holes. At least two different aperture ratios of the mesh holes forming the printing patterns are provided according to the positions of regions on the screen-printing plate in which the printing patterns are disposed. The aperture ratio of the mesh holes forming the printing patterns positioned in a region close to the periphery of the plate frame is set higher than the aperture ratio of the mesh holes forming the printing patterns positioned in a central region of the plate frame.
Abstract: Absorbent pants having a waist opening, two leg openings, and a waterproof outer barrier layer, which is arranged outside the pants layer. The pants layer has a surface area which is greater than that of the outer barrier layer and is joined in parts with itself or includes a device for enabling it to be joined in parts with itself, so that during use of the pants it alone constitutes the waist opening and the leg openings of the pants, and that the load-bearing parts of the pants and all of the parts lying against the body of the user are formed only from the pants layer. The pants are also elastic, where the outer barrier layer is essentially inelastic.
Abstract: Disclosed are polycyclic ?-amino-?-caprolactams and related compounds which are useful as synthetic intermediates in the preparation of inhibitors of ?-amyloid peptide release and/or its synthesis.

Abstract: The present invention is to provide a recyclable mage-recording member from which a printed material such as toner can be removed, characterized in that the printed material can be removed selectively.
Abstract: Absorbent article such as a diaper and an incontinence guard provided with a pair of belt members (10a, 10b) intended to be fastened together around the waist of the wearer by fastening means (11,12) and where said front portion (5), is provided with fasteners (8,9) intended to be fastened to the belt members (10a, 10b), in such a way that the article will assume a pantlike shape, where the belt members (10a, 10b) form a part of the waist portions of the pant. The belt members (10a, 10b) include a flexible laminate of at least three layers of fibrous material bonded together in a bonding pattern having a bonding area of no more than 10%.
Abstract: The invention concerns a composite diamond window (10) which includes a CVD diamond window pane (12) which is mounted to a CVD diamond window frame (14). The frame (14) is thicker than the pane (12) and has a radiation transmission aperature (16) therein across which the pane spans.
Abstract: A photonic crystal fiber comprising a bulk material having an arrangement of longitudinal holes (130, 140) and a guiding core (135), wherein the fiber has at-most-two-fold rotational symmetry about a longitudinal axis and as a result of that lack of symmetry, the fiber is birefringent.

Abstract: An emitter for an electron-beam projection lithography (EPL) system and a manufacturing method therefor are provided. The electron-beam emitter includes a substrate, an insulating layer overlying the substrate, and a gate electrode including a base layer formed on top of the insulating layer to a uniform thickness and an electron-beam blocking layer formed on the base layer in a predetermined pattern. The manufacturing method includes steps of: preparing a substrate; forming an insulating layer on the substrate; forming a base layer of a gate electrode by depositing a conductive metal on the insulating layer to a predetermined thickness; forming an electron-beam blocking layer of the gate electrode by depositing a metal capable of anodizing on the base layer to a predetermined thickness; and patterning the electron-beam blocking layer in a predetermined pattern by anodizing. The emitter provides a uniform electric field within the insulating layer and simplify the manufacturing method therefor.

Abstract: A rear-wheel steering angle control device includes a target rear-wheel steering angle calculating means for calculating a target rear-wheel steering angle based upon the detection by a detecting means. The target rear-wheel steering angle calculating means further calculates an averaged locus by averaging a front end point running locus based upon a sample point memorized by a front end point locus memorizing means. The target rear-wheel steering angle calculating means still further limits the target rear-wheel steering angle not to deviate a vehicle rear end point from an inner range of the averaged locus.
