  • Patent number: 4557009
Abstract: An electrode cleaning apparatus wherein a carbon electrode is cleaned in a two-step process, the first step being a rough cleaning operation wherein scraper elements scrape the electrode at a first station, and a second step wherein the electrode moves between counter-rotating vertical shafts having flailing elements connected thereto in a second station. The electrode is suspended by a hoist supported on a track which moves the electrode along a path through the first and second stations.

  • Patent number: 4549567
Abstract: A fluid distributor in which a rotor having a distributing passageway is positioned above pie-shaped exit compartments in a tubular housing. The passageway extends from a central opening in the housing downward and with a circumferential cant to just above the compartmented exits, whereby a fluid input produces a rotation of the rotor, and as it rotates, the fluid is sequentially fed to and discharged through the compartmented exits.

  • Patent number: 4539076
Abstract: A vapor compression distillation system for distillation of any two-component liquid mixture where separation of the more volatile from the less volatile component is required. This system achieves a very high efficiency through the use of vapor compression in conjunction with three heat exchangers: a reboiler which condenses the hot vapors compressed by a vapor pump and uses the heat given up by the condensing vapor to boil bottoms liquid to produce vapor within the stripper, a distillate heat exchanger which recovers heat from the distillate stream, and a bottoms heat exchanger which recovers heat from the outgoing bottoms effluent. This particular component configuration and process results in an exceptionally stable and reliable operation requiring the continuous control of only one parameter, reboiler temperature, while fixing all other process variables.

  • Patent number: 4530045
Abstract: A measurement and control system for employment with a plurality of significantly spaced process access locations wherein a single cable extends in a loop by these access locations, and both ends of the cable are terminated at a central controller. The cable consists of a solid, conductive, outer housing and four spaced conductors within the housing, the housing being otherwise filled with a dielectric material. Data units are positioned at each access location, and each data unit is configured to supply and receive, or one of the other, discrete data by being coupled to the cable, two of the conductors of the cable furnishing power for the data unit, and the other two providing communications. Certain of the data units employ transducers to measure a single physical state. Outputs from these transducers, in analog form, are serialized, converted to digital data, cross-compared to determine off scaled readings, and the good readings averaged.

  • Patent number: 4527604
Abstract: A wood chipping assembly having a discharge chute that includes a directional flap such that, depending upon the position of the flap, the wood chips and the residual material generated by the wood chipping assembly may be commingled or they may be maintained in separate chutes so as to be individually discharged. This directional flap is maintained in its desired position by a latching mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4523499
Abstract: A rotor disc brake lathe for simultaneously machining both left- and right-hand disc brake rotors of a vehicle wherein the rotors are mounted on opposite ends of a centrally supported horizontal drive shaft, and a pair of tool arm assemblies are mounted on both opposite end regions of a horizontal cross arm which is moved vertically on machine ways to effect selective engagement with and machining of the rotors. A spring biased vibration dampener is mounted on one of each pair of tool arms for engagement with one side of each rotor during the machining operation. A clutch mechanism to allow selective manual or motor driven vertical feed of the cross arm is provided.

  • Patent number: 4520232
Abstract: A system for encoding, or encrypting, digital data wherein an invertible matrix of binary bits provides the encrypting factor or key, this invertible matrix being loaded in a memory. Blocks or sets of binary bits of data, a string of serially appearing binary bits, to be encoded are sequentially loaded into discrete, ordered stages of an input shift register, and the state of each stage is coupled as an enabling signal to sets of gates which read out the binary states of rows of the matrix configured memory. Groups of outputs from gates, conforming to columns of the matrix memory, are fed to an exclusive OR gate for each group. Then, the outputs of the exclusively OR gates for several columns of the matrix are loaded into discrete stages of an output register. The combination of the states of the output register together provide a block or polygraphic encryption, or decryption, of the binary data supplied the input register. The states of the output register are then clocked out in serial form.

  • Patent number: 4515196
Abstract: A sawmill in which a multi-log supporting mechanism is constructed wherein logs are grasped at spaced angular positions about the mechanism and rotated by it between an initial receiving position to a profile measurement position and then to a sawing position. The end-to-end axis of the supporting mechanism is adjustably oriented with respect to a saw in terms of profile measurements and size of lumber determined to be cut from a log. Directionally, this adjustment is made normal to the profile measurement dimension.

  • Patent number: 4510526
Abstract: A surveillance system wherein a TV camera is pivotally mounted along its optical axis on or along a ceiling, and a mirror is pivotally mounted about an axis perpendicular to the optical axis to intercept the view of the camera. Then, by selected rotation of the camera and mirror about these axes, both pan and tilt functions are achieved in a very compact structure. Camera and mirror controls are effected by a wireless link to a carriage supporting the camera, and the video output of the camera is applied as an output over a second wireless link. Further, power for locomotion of the carriage, orientation of elements on the carriage, and for electronic circuitry on the carriage is all provided via a battery on the carriage. The charge on the battery is maintained by a trolley-type power application system.
