  • Patent number: 3968133
Abstract: This invention concerns a process for preparing linear fatty (carboxylic) acids and esters from the reaction of olefins, alcohols (or water) and carbon monoxide. The process is catalyzed by catalytic amounts of dispersions of ligand-stabilized, palladium(II) halide complexes, in quaternary ammonium, phosphonium or arsonium salts of trihalostannate(II) or trihalogermanate(II). These empirically selected palladium catalysts can be recycled with fresh olefin feed several times before substantial loss of catalytic activity is encountered.

  • Patent number: 3966587
Abstract: An improved method is disclosed for controlling the temperature of the fluidized dense catalyst phase of the regeneration zone in a fluid catalytic cracking unit, wherein the coke laydown in the reaction zone is at a level such that the coke concentration of the partially deactivated catalyst from the reaction zone is not sufficient to provide the heat required to maintain the controlled temperature in the fluidized dense catalyst phase of the regeneration zone. In this method, torch oil is added to the partially deactivated catalyst in the spent catalyst transfer line in an amount such that the catalyst charged to the regeneration zone contains sufficient combustible material to provide the heat necessary to maintain the fluidized dense catalyst phase of the regeneration zone at the controlled temperature.

  • Patent number: 3963603
Abstract: A fluidized catalytic cracking process wherein the reaction zone comprises one or more riser reaction conduits discharging into a reaction vessel. Hydrocarbon vapors and catalyst discharging from the risers separate to form a dense phase fluidized catalyst bed and a hydrocarbon vapor phase within the reaction vessel. A selected weight inventory of catalyst is maintained in the reaction vessel dense phase catalyst bed by valve means responsive to the weight of catalyst. Conversion of hydrocarbon in the reaction vessel may be increased by reducing the dense phase catalyst bed bulk density and consequently increasing contact of catalyst with hydrocarbon vapor within the reaction vessel.

  • Patent number: 3962076
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a process for disposing of aqueous sewage and for producing fresh water by coking the sewage in the liquid phase to form gases, coke and an effluent which is extracted with a hot liquid hydrocarbon to form a hydrocarbon-water solution and a hot concentrated brine. The hot brine is injected into the sewage sludge to heat same to coking temperature. Hot water is removed from the hydrocarbon-water solution, used for space heating or the like and thereby cooled. The cool water then is passed through a carbon absorber to remove traces of hydrocarbon dissolved therein, and chlorinated to give potable water.
