Abstract: Non-carcinogenic bright stock extracts and/or deasphalted oils are produced from reduced hydrocarbon feedstocks. Such non-carcinogenic products are produced by establishing a functional relationship between mutagenicity index and a physical property correlative of hydrocarbon type for the bright stock extract or deasphalted oil and determining a critical physical property level which, when achieved, results in a product having a mutagenicity index of less than about 1.0. Process conditions are established so that a product stream achieving the desired physical property level can be produced. Non-carcinogenic bright stock extracts and/or deasphalted oils are then processed utilizing the conditions so established. A bright stock extract and a deasphalted oil substantilly free from mutagenic activity, as well as processes for their production are also provided herein.

Abstract: A liquid membrane method for removing scale deposits wherein a novel chelating composition is utilized. The composition used in the external and internal aqueous phases of said membrane comprises an aqueous solution having a pH of about 8 to about 14, and a polyaminopolycarboxylic acid chelant. Additionally, a catalyst or synergist is used in the external phase only. Preferred chelants comprise diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), salts, and mixtures thereof. The catalyst used in the external phase comprises an oxalate anion. When the solution containing the composition is contacted with a surface containing a scale deposit, the deposit dissolves substantially more scale quicker then heretofore possible.

Abstract: Turbine oils are produced from a distillate lube fraction by solvent extraction to remove aromatics, e.g., with furfural, then dewaxing and hydrofinishing to saturate residual aromatics. Treatment with an organic peroxide, such as ditertiary butyl peroxide (DTBP), increases viscosity to compensate for the viscosity loss during the hydrofinishing. Dewaxing may be solvent or catalytic dewaxing or both. Peroxide treatment also reduces cloud point.

Abstract: A process for regeneration of cracking catalyst while minimizing NO.sub.x emissions is disclosed. A Group IIIB based DeNO.sub.x additive is present in an amount and in a form which reduces NO.sub.x emissions. Relatively small amounts of lanthanum or yttrium oxides, or lanthanum titanate, preferably impregnated on a separate support are effective to reduce NO.sub.x produced in the regenerator. The additive converts NO.sub.x to nitrogen even when Pt CO combustion promoter and some excess oxygen are present in the regenerator.
Abstract: A male and female mold parts combination for forming a latch opening in a container molded from a softened sheet of plastic having a female mold key member arranged on the female mold part; a male mold key member arranged on the male mold part; a cutting edge adjacent to a planar face of one key and a vertical surface having a bevelled edge surface on the other key. The keys being normally registered so that on closure of the mold parts, initial contact will involve the cutting edge, the bevelled edge surface and the plastic therebetween. One of the keys is fixed in one of the mold parts and the other of the keys being located in the other of the mold parts and free to move independently of its mold part so that on closure of the mold parts the cutting edge will ride off the bevelled edge surface and slide across the vertical surface piercing and enlarging a latch opening in the plastic.
Abstract: The present invention relates to multi-layer coextruded thermoplastic stretch wrap films useful for the packaging or palletizing of goods. More particularly the films of this invention include at least three layers having two outer layers and at least one intermediate layer placed between the outer layers. The intermediate layer is formed from a high pressure low density polyethylene resion and the outer layers are formed from a linear low density polyethylene copolymer such as ethylene copolymerized with a minor amount of at least on C.sub.4 to C.sub.10 alpha-olefin, such as hexene-1, octene-1, decene-1, 4-methyl-pentene-1 and butene-1. The force required to stretch the films of this invention may be controlled by the thickness of the intermediate layer relative to overall film thickness, the melt index of the intermediate layer resin, the molecular weight of the intermediate layer resin or a combination thereof.

Abstract: A semi-continuous, multi-stage polymerization process is provided for synthesizing a heat-sealable multi-layered composite particle latex. The multi-layered composite latex particles of this invention provide excellent oxygen and vapor barrier properties without hindering the desired surface properties, including high heat-sealing strength, low minimal seal temperature, excellent machinability, i.e. low blocking and low coefficient of friction. The latex particles of the present invention are formed as three-layered composite particles having an acrylic ester seed layer composed of a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate. The latex particles have an intermediate core layer composed of a terpolymer having a high vinylidene chloride concentration, the other comonomers of the core layer include methyl acrylate and methacrylic acid.
Abstract: A stretch wrap film having one surface with cling properties and the other with noncling properties, one noncling property being a slip property exhibited when the noncling surface is in contact with a like surface of itself with relative motion therebetween having the improvement whichis comprised of positioning at least one region between the cling and noncling surfaces of the film, said region being of a material selected to provide barrier properties sufficient to maintain the cling and noncling properties of the cling and noncling surfaces. A high number average molecular weight cling additive is used to reduce additive migration and transfer.
Abstract: An improved process and apparatus are disclosed for fluidized catalytic cracking of hydrocarbons using a swirl type catalyst regenerator.
