  • Patent number: 8056335
Abstract: A shape memory alloy actuated device is provided for engaging a movable object. The device may include a first movable component, a shape memory alloy for moving the first component from a first position to a second position, a biasing element configured to expand the shape memory alloy object and apply a continual tensile force to the shape memory alloy object. The device may be configured to allow the first component move between the first position and the second position other than by transferring force to the shape memory alloy object. The device may also be configured to allow the shape memory alloy object to expand and contract when the first component is retained in the first position.

  • Patent number: 8057614
Abstract: A method of forming a molding mat formed bundles of reinforcing fibers and bonding materials is provided. The reinforcing fibers are preferably wet use chopped strand glass fibers (WUCS). The bonding materials may be any thermosetting material having a melting point less than the reinforcing fiber. The molding mat may be formed by partially opening the wet use chopped strand glass fibers and filamentizing the bonding materials, blending the reinforcement and bonding fibers, forming the reinforcement and bonding fibers into a sheet, and bonding the sheet. During bonding, the sheet is heated to a temperature above the melting point of the bonding fibers but below the temperature of the glass fibers. The molding mat thus formed may be used as a reinforcement material in sheet molding compounds.

  • Patent number: 8052326
Abstract: A bearing (1) having a frame (2), the frame at least partly surrounding two matrices (12, 16), each of a plurality of spheres (10) which are mounted for rotation so that the spheres in each matrix when the matrix is flat lie in a substantially single plane, the plane of one matrix being parallel to that of the other, the spheres of one matrix are so located that they mostly lie against the spheres on the other matrices so that rotation of the spheres of one matrix results in counter-rotation of spheres of the other matrix; the bearing formed in such a way enables the beating to be pushed or pulled under an object such as a patient lying on the ground with little or no movement transmitted to the object/patient as the bearing moves between the object and an underlying surface. The bearing can also be used for massaging a patient who is unable to move his or her body or for bearings with civil engineering applications.

  • Patent number: 8047403
Abstract: A bifurcated stem foam pump for use in foam dispensers. An air compressor portion of the bifurcated pump is attached to and maintained as a portion of the dispenser housing. A portion of the pump for transferring liquid and including a portion for generating foam is attached to and provided as a portion of a replaceable liquid-containing cartridge in the foam dispenser. The two portions mate and form a completed pump assembly operative for generating foam from the liquid of the cartridge when the cartridge is placed within the dispenser housing and the two pump portions are mated. The air compressor portion includes a collar having an air piston reciprocatingly received therein. The collar is attached to the dispenser housing. A collar receiving a hollow stem pump is attached to the liquid cartridge. Actuation of the air piston correspondingly actuates the stem pump such that air and liquid are forced together in the stem pump and through a foam generating member.

  • Patent number: 8048351
Abstract: A hose for use in bio-pharmaceutical applications includes an innermost tubular layer made from a fluoropolymer material. The tubular layer has an inner, relatively smooth and pure surface that defines an opening for transfer of various media. A layer of silicone is disposed next to an outer surface of the innermost tubular layer through use of, for example, an extrusion method. The outer surface of the tubular layer may first be modified by various treatments or chemicals to facilitate the adhesion of the silicone layer thereto. The silicone material may be solid or foamed. A reinforcement layer may be disposed adjacent to an outer surface of the silicone layer. The reinforcement layer may be formed of a wire braid having gaps. An outer jacket of silicone may be attached to the reinforcement layer and to the inner silicone layer through the gaps in the reinforcement layer.

  • Patent number: 8043025
Abstract: A paving mat for use in a paved surface includes a fibrous mat in the form of a paving mat. The fibrous mat includes a fibrous matrix containing a mixture of polymer fibers, first mineral fibers having a first median length, and second mineral fibers having a second median length that is different from the first median length. In another embodiment, the paving mat includes a fibrous mat including a fibrous matrix which is bonded together by a binder. In one embodiment, the binder is a mixture of different binders. The fibrous matrix includes a mixture of mineral fibers in an amount within a range of from 61 wt % to 85 wt % and polymer fibers in an amount within a range of from 15 wt % to 39 wt %. The polymer fibers have a melting point greater than 320° F. (160° C.). The mat has a stiffness in the machine direction within a range of from 65 g-cm to 110 g-cm.

  • Patent number: 8038348
Abstract: The present application relates to fluid filled pouches arranged in a row. The fluid filled units comprise elongate, heat sealable, face and back layers that are jointed together at a side edge, and by transverse seals to form pouches. The pouches are filled with fluid and are sealed at a split edge, defining fluid filled units. The fluid filled units can be separated along transverse lines of weakness. The transverse lines of weakness are defined by perforations, including perforations nearest the split edge that are shorter in length than perforations that are spaced further from the split edge and extend toward the side edge.

  • Patent number: 8038180
Abstract: A fitting for a tube or pipe capable of functioning a high pressures having a first fitting component adapted to receive the conduit end; a conduit gripping device such as a ferrule or ferrules and a second fitting component that can be joined to the first fitting component to cause the conduit gripping device to grip the conduit and seal when assembled. In one aspect of the invention, the first fitting component is constructed from a material that is softer than the material used to construct the second fitting component. An additional aspect of the invention include a retaining portion on the second fitting component that constrains the tube gripping device against pressure. The retaining portion can also be configured to retain the tube gripping device to the second fitting component prior to installation and in a finger-tight condition.
